We haven't spoken since you came back from holidays. Everything okay? How was New York?

You'll have to tell me all about your trip. Gotta say, I'm jealous. Mine were... all right. Benjamin's pretty upset about Marlene, though. You feeling okay, though? You look kinda bummed about something. Do you need to see Madam Pomfrey?

Stefan sighed and lifted a hand up to his face, rubbing across it and pressing his lips together, fighting back the telltale tightening of his throat whenever he thought about it. Which seemed to be constantly.
He wanted to ignore it. Put a fake smile on his face and pretend everything was fine. Just like he'd been doing--or trying to do--since he got back to school. But this was Imogen. He glanced sideways at her face and sighed, immediately feeling guilty. This was his best friend.
Look, I should have told you sooner. I just didn't want it to be a thing with other people because I'm already... anyway.
My parents are dead.

The second she read his note, Imogen knew that this was not the kind of conversation to have in class. But Professor McGongall was not going to let both of them go "to the loo" in the middle of taking notes, and she didn't think it would be proper to discuss it out in the corridor either. At the same time, she also didn't think she could wait to talk to him when classes let out for the day, since that was several hours away and she didn't know if she'd be able to find him without stalking his bed until nightfall. She tried not to draw attention to them, since McGonagall could spot notes being passed like a hawk. Oh my god. When? Are you What happened I'm so sorry, Stefan, I had no idea, I just knew you were quiet and I'm sorry, oh my god.
Listen, if there's anything I can do to help you, let me know, okay? And if you need to be alone and not in class, I can get your homework. I'm sure Flitwick will understand if you talk to him.
I'm so, so sorry.

God, he wasn't going to cry. Not again. Lyle had had to deal with enough crap from him over the last couple of holiday days and he wasn't about to break down in the middle of class, for Merlin's sake. It didn't matter that the school had been notified, and yes, some professors had pulled him aside to reassure him he could take some days off if he needed but he didn't need, okay? He didn't need another excuse to have nothing to do and wallow in his misery and keep crying. He was done with crying. This was why he wasn't telling anybody; why he'd made Emmeline and Lyle and Gabby promise they wouldn't tell anybody either. Because telling meant talking about it and talking about it meant thinking about it. And Stefan couldn't handle thinking about it.
Taking another deep breath, he tried to steady his breathing before replying to the note as subtly as possible.
Thank you, and I'm so sorry I didn't tell you before, I know I should have and I promise it's nothing personal, Imogen. You're still my best friend and it has nothing to do with it, ok?
And no, it's okay. I'd rather just... pretend to be normal right now. Thank you, though. And I'm sorry just...I don't know, I'm sorry.

Stefan, you don't have to be sorry for anything, all right? You don't have to pretend to be anything with me, okay?
Do you want to talk later? After classes?

You didn't have to get me anything, but it was sweet of you to do so.
How are you and Lyle?

You're my best friend! Of course I did. And it's just something small from the city I thought you'd like.
We're um... we're... he's... um. Okay. I guess. I mean. Yeah. Um. Good.

Well, I got you something from the island, but it's in my trunk still.
That didn't sound too confident Yeah? Is he doing okay? I know he was in a bad place after Mungo's.
