a b o u t . t h e . c h a r a c t e r ! Name: Remus John Lupin Date of Birth: March 10, 1960 Gender: Male Year: Graduate Face Claim: Dave Franco
Canon or Original? Canon
Distinguishing Physical Features: Remus has eyes of brown specked with grey; they constantly carry mixed looks between mischief and a puppy that was just kicked. His dark brown eyebrows brood over them as a rim to complete the look. He’s thin, not much in the way of brawn or intimidation. All of Remus’s features minus the line shaped scar on his chin are soft and give the illusion, rather fittingly, of boyish innocence. His hair is a dusty brown kept short on the sides but moppy and blonde on the top, bleached from spending too much time in front of the library window where sun is in abundance. His skin is white and his face a long ovalular shape, while his mouth, when opened, is immensely large. He has a few scars on different parts of his body that made be accounted for by his age and rambunctious way of life, but that are a result of something much different than one could immediately guess. Though young and handsome, he never looks entirely well. His voice his hoarse, very unsmooth, like someone who has recently picked up the habit of smoking. Wand Type: Cedar, 9 inches, Dragon heartstring, springy Patronus: A speckled salamander Boggart: A full moon, looming ominously in the sky Personality:
Reliability Remus Lupin fits into the famous marauder quartet as the stable and reliable one (that is, when he’s not a raging monster). He has a strong moral compass that points to the right no matter the situation and is found trying, albeit somewhat pointlessly, to remind his friends to make the “right” choice. He’s still a trouble maker to be sure but feels that everything must be “within reason”. Remus has always been candid in his behavior and in what he thinks, except when a girl is involved. The once boy-now-turned-man is accepting of what he’s been given in life, regardless of the unusual trials that he faces, the very smallest being lack of a fortune. As the cedar wood in his wand can attest, he is most loyal, especially to his close friends, and he would do nothing to betray their trust intentionally. Remus can listen to your troubles about as well as any other young man can do. So, not very well, but he does try. He is distracted quite often, sometimes to the point of being fidgety and flighty, and he has been known on more than one occasion to abruptly stand up and walk away in the middle of a conversation. When something in the world changes, for the good or the bad, Remus can weather it better than most. Change is an element he has grown accustomed to and he’ll put his best foot forward to face it, whatever that may be.
Passive He is not passive in every situation, but Remus will give up on something rather quickly. He tends to be a wet blanket when faced with mighty obstacles that he doesn’t technically have to pursue. If the mountain is too high or the river is too deep for the reward, he might just let it go. This causes people to say that Remus is unmotivated and has a “give up” attitude. There are exceptions, of course, to every rule. Remus would not give up on something that would be detrimental to other people or his friends, which is why he is a good fit for the Order of the Pheonix. But, say, if there was a girl and she wanted to be chased….Remus is the chasee, not the chaser, let’s just put it that way. Having to officially register as a werewolf when applying for employment has met Remus with enough disappointment that he hasn’t looked for a real job in months, and he has plenty of excuses at the ready as to why he shouldn’t if someone encourages him to do so. A fan of excuses, Remus is. He will always say that he wasn’t born with the ability to weasel out of things, but that Sirius had just rubbed off on him. Remus allows a lot of things to happen to him without overreacting about it. He and his friends poke fun at one another without malice and it always rolls off their shoulders. He gets asked sometimes why he doesn’t take more offense or grow angry when he’s insulted by another person but that isn’t Remus’s way. He has had to learn to let matters go, to exert will power, because if he does not, then he feels that he is giving into the beast within. Such passive tendencies don’t exist when the moon nears to full, and agitation is eminent in him. Lastly, Remus can be a guilt trip to himself and to others. He feels guilty for this or that, even when something isn’t exactly his fault, and the amount of guilt that he is showing is usually only the tip of the iceberg as to what it underneath.
A Pinch of Trouble Remus is still an item in a recipe for disaster. Remus thinks of James as the leader, he as the brains, Sirius as the muscle, and Peter as…..well, Peter is interesting. He always tried to find a good place for Peter as he felt a bit sorry for him really, the way he and Sirius always went on. It’s fun to Remus to be able to get away with things that aren’t exactly within the rules, and more fun still when you could do it over, and over and over again, and still not get caught for doing it. Of course, things are a little bit different now that they’ve graduated but the marauders can still be found coloring outside of the lines. When Remus laughs it’s enough to start you laughing, because his mouth opens wider than a hippopotamus and he throws his head back in a howl. He’s either laughing at something or acting deep and perplexed, but there is very rarely a somewhere in-between. Remus doesn’t take any pranks too seriously far, although his friends sometimes do. He considers someone getting hurt or an item of great worth getting damaged as going too far, but say, a harmless hexing of a professor? They could be easily adjusted again. Like many his age, he still acts like a kid and can be a bit immature at times. He, at least, never had trouble getting his homework done while in school and may spend hours in a library or a study researching. School was a constant battle for him – the battle between wanting an education and learning verses wanting to prank the professors and laugh about it. Everything about Remus is a constant balance of yin and yang.
Romance He’s not so great about it. No, that isn’t true, it’s that Remus doesn’t know how to get to that point. Though he would be teased relentlessly, Remus very much likes the idea of romance. The problem occurs at point A – talking to a girl in the first place. Talking to Lily is easy because she’s Lily, but other girls are a bit intimidating. Remus could probably keep up if they were to initiate contact, because then he knows they’re interested, but to get up the nerve to approach a girl on his own! That’s a whole universe of unknown. Besides that, being a werewolf, he’s not sure he really should even go down that path. What if he were to really like her, and then she wanted to get married or something? He couldn’t have kids, he was a werewolf for god’s sake. No, Remus doesn’t have much of a romantic life, though every now and again he would go on a date at Hogwarts. He even had a couple relationships in school but they didn’t last that long. Remus would accidentally neglect them, either because he couldn’t think of a single interesting thing to say to the girl, or because he was too busy causing chaos with the gang. It’s just a lot easier to be friends with girls, and he can’t help himself, he likes when it’s easy.
Underestimated Since he doesn’t immediately stand out, Remus is often underestimated in what he can do. He’s a smart wizard and has more talent and knowledge than one might assume. He enjoys being liked by others and so makes sure to be very nice, but an unfortunate side effect makes him the smallest bit a pushover and so, people underestimate him. His quiet nature adds to that assumption although he has a variety of opinions you may not think possible, that Remus is more than willing to share if you ask. He is proud and does not regret the decisions that he makes, and being underestimated may in fact be just one of the most useful traits he’s ever had in a fight. He can diffuse a bad situation but it doesn’t mean Remus always will. Even even tempered people have their breaking point. Remus has light, gentle humor that he likes to add to an uncomfortable moment and it generally works out in his favor. Another element about him that may surprise is that he’s a bit judgmental and paranoid. He very often looks for the shadow in the dark when there isn’t one, and sometimes second guesses a person’s motives for something. It can be annoying really, when he does this to his friends. He feels that the worst is yet to come and that rain is just around the corner.

History: Remus John Lupin was born on March 10, 1960 to John and Emily Lupin. He was the only child and would remain as such for the humble parents. His father is a wizard and the son of wizards, but his mother grew up as a muggle, making Remus a half-blood. John and Emily first made contact when John was visiting the muggle world, attempting to research the lives of these ordinary people. Such a fascination for study would be passed on to his only son. A twenty something year old university student was crossing the busy London street when she caught John’s eye. She was no ordinary muggle – she was extraordinary. Her long blonde hair swept across her face, her skirt clinging to her legs in the gusty wind. He especially enjoyed her smile, a smile that said she knew something that no one else in the entire world could know. And then she was hit by a car. John raced across the street, nearly getting hit himself, to rush to the girl’s aid. As a witness, he answered the appropriate questions asked him by the police and demanded to go the hospital with the bruised girl. As sorry as John was for her misfortune (she never quite recovered), it was here that John actually met the love of his life. Her name was Emily, and she was the most ordinary muggle you ever did meet. A nursing intern in the E.R., Emily wore big bottle rimmed glasses and had her mousey brown hair piled hastily on top of her head. Most people would call her plain, but her intellect. Oh, her intellect! What John wouldn’t give to listen to those purse little lips explain anatomy to him. John stayed through the night in order to share a few passing comments with the busy intern, even posing as the injured girl’s brother in desperation. Although Emily feigned disinterest, she found John’s cute persistent and humor, although ill-timed, enduring. Their love affair was cut off when the college student’s real brother showed up and John was almost escorted to jail, but not before he got Emily’s tele.
John had no idea how to use a telephone. He managed, of course, in the end, and John and Emily began a romance that ended in a wedding. It wasn’t until after their marriage that John wisely decided it was finally time to tell the practical Emily that he was a wizard. She didn’t believe him at first and considered getting her husband committed, but after showing her some magic tricks that were impossible to deny, Emily slowly began to accept the concept of magic. Emily even began to like it, asking her beloved John to take care of the household duties. It took several months of trying but Emily finally became pregnant, and she gave birth to a healthy baby boy named Remus. His parents wanted more children but unfortunately John and Emily were never to have another child. Since this was the case, they worked hard on raising a son that would be everything they wanted in their other children all in one, since he was, after all, their only shot. Remus’s childhood in terms of finances was always incredibly modest, since his father, genius that he was, was incapable in staying in one occupation and Remus’s mother didn’t have skill sets that fit the working force of the wizarding world. Remus was raised to believe that less was more and even less was, adequate. He was a clever little child and no matter how his mother tried, Remus would always find the hidden stash of cookies no matter where she put them next. He took a particular interest in making fake treasure maps, sending himself and others on adventures and obstacle courses that would lead to something like a new crayon or a stale brownie.
While a devoted husband and father, John Lupin lacked social skills and he really didn’t know when to keep quiet. This became apparent on a night that would change everyone’s lives. He had always been an opinionated bloke, and it was in the wizarding community one day, a pub to be exact, when he came across a rather horrendous brute of a gentleman named Fenrir Greyback. They had met before and the meeting had not been a pleasant one. John started a conversation about experimentations, and said he’d often wanted to get a hold of a werewolf on the full moon to see if he could somehow freeze the process. It would be a most interesting find to be able to watch the transformation in slow motion, examining the bone formation and deformation. He also said a variety of other things, such as how werewolves needed to be controlled and didn't deserve normal human rights. He seemed oblivious to the fact that Greyback was a werewolf, and that his words were, no matter how you viewed them, naïve and atrocious. The conversation was not only short but unpleasant, and John walked off hand-in-hand with his five year old son feeling his feathers had been ruffled. That evening, Remus, playing past bed time, went out of the house and wandered into the woods just down the street. A scream of a child while John called half heartedlly outside for his little child to come inside sent John running. How he could have let a five year old out of his sight, he did not know. John was able only to see the back of a retreating beast into the shadows and then it was gone. Gathering his son in his arms he took Remus home, but when he set his son on the table he found the reason for his wimpers. He had been bitten. In that moment Remus’s life was changed. Every full moon he became an unrecognizable beast, a werewolf, which his frightened parents had to contend with. They worked hard to figure out how to reverse what had been done, but nothing helped. John even gave Remus potions and performed experimentations much like he had said he wanted but realized that he was harming his son and putting his own life in danger. The one good thing that came out of the entirely messy situation is that John learned to keep his mouth shut.
The older he got, the less painful and more normal the transformations became for Remus, though never without tremendous fear that he held for the lives of others. It was a dream come true to realize that Professor Dumbledore of Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry still welcomed him, and he got his acceptance letter by owl on his eleventh birthday. Remus had never had many friends, if any, after the incident. His parents were simply too afraid to let him near other children. When Remus arrived at Hogwarts and was sorted into Gryffindor, all of that changed. Immediately he met a few other boys who became his best friends for life: James Potter, Sirius Black, and a little while later, Peter Pettigrew. They didn’t mind Remus’s peculiar nature and he didn’t mind their crazy antics. Together, they began to cause quite a lot of trouble in school. Remus reveled in his new-found freedom away from home, but grew wary as his first full moon at the school approached. Professor Dumbledore helped Remus by recommending an old abandoned shack as a possible location for transformation. At first, Remus went alone, howling at all hours of the night and frightening the locals. Eventually, it developed the nickname, “The Shrieking Shack.” After some time, his friends found Remus’s excuses for going away to be inadequate, during their second year, and found out Remus one startling night. Remus was terrified they would no longer be friends with him, but to his surprise, they accepted him. They even practiced until they could change into the forms of animals so as to stay by Remus’s side during the full moon.
All four of them became closer with each passing year at Hogwarts. Remus was made a prefect by Headmaster Dumbledore, likely to try and get some type of reign over the other marauders, which was really in vain. After graduation Remus sought out employment but was met with relentless rejection, as one was required to register as a werewolf, and no one wanted him, no matter how hard of a worker he may be. As Mr and Mrs. Lupin’s debts and financial situation became grave, Remus’s friend James Potter took him under his wing and gave him the finances he so desperately needed. Remus didn’t know how he would ever repay him. The marauders, as they liked to call themselves, became members of the Order of the Pheonix, giving Remus the sense of purpose he felt he had been lacking. Although still relatively new, the Order has already been in a few significant battles, and each member as been in the face of death. Things grow more serious and somber each passing day and Remus feels something dark and ominous is growing, and he only hopes that the Order will be prepared to fight it.
