Distinguishing Physical Features:

Rabastan stands under just 6 feet tall, but projects the body language of someone much taller. He’s skilled at making whoever he is talking to feel very small by the way he positions himself. Rabastan feels very self-entitled and shows it. When he looks at someone, his chin is always slightly lifted so he looks down the bridge of his nose at them. His upper lip usually appears to be on the verge of pulling back in a sneer, giving him the appearance of constantly looking like he smells something particularly rank. His overall build is lean and long. Rabastan’s skin is pale, his fingers are long and thin, and he keeps his hair carefully in place at all times. He has a very put together appearance, opting for only the best cloaks and wizarding attire, and has a certain affinity for sleek, well-tailored suits. His hair is a dull brown and Rabastan’s eyes are large and an intense shade of blue that are almost startling.

Personality: Rabastan Lestrange is of a powerful and wealthy pureblood line and behaves as such. Growing up, he was a touch on the quiet side, opting to sit back and observe than actively participate. Rabastan was much more interested in learning than participating in social activities. As a pureblood wizard, he believes it is his duty to not only learn as much spells, potions and mgaical techniques that he can, but also use said skills for the betterment of the pureblood race. Almost everything Rabastan does is in direct relation to furthering the pureblood cause and to assist Lord Voldemort in his most honorable endeavors. While as a child his hunger for knowledge began as a way to uphold his family's high expectations, as a teenager and into being an adult, he has developed into the Death Eater's (and Voldemort's) most valuable weapons of covert infiltration. Rabastan has nothing but respect and adoration for his Lord, and everything he does is to please Voldemort and further the pureblood initiative. If forced to make the choice between siding with his family or Lord Voldemort, the question wouldn't even be finished before Rabastan had stepped to The Dark Lord's side. Luckily, the two coincide quite completely. While he is a good liar and knows that it is part of his job to seem uninvolved with the Death Eaters or Voldemort's initiative (at least until his task is completed), it truly pains him to speak against his Lord in public.

His greatest attribute is that Rabastan is incredibly smart. He spent most of his life studying and perfecting complex dark magic and had little to no interest in social interactions other than to learn how to manipulate people. Even though, most of the things about the human psyche and behavior he learned from books, and then took into the real world to use. His general demeanor projects a sense of boredom or that he has far better things to do than spend his time talking to you. If he needs information from someone, however, Rabastan can turn up the charm, or at least make himself appear friendly enough to engage them. Rabastan is known for making direct eye contact with his already intense eyes, but far less people know it's for the sake of legilimency. Having legilimens allows Rabastan to be more intune to a person's emotions while being able to determine if they are lying without even needing to use legilimency to read their minds. A person unaware would simply think Rabastan is intuitive, while the members of Voldemort know the real reason why the man who hates most humans is able to read them so well.

Rabastan makes little to no effort in forming actual relationships with anyone. He has never had a girlfriend and is perfectly content with that fact, seeing as The Dark Lord takes up all of his preoccupation and adoration. He has no regard for any damage he may cause and is entirely unaffected by the misfortune of others. He is a classic high functioning sociopath and cares about nothing other than himself and his master. The only things he does seem to be good at doing with other people is manipulating them. He is particularly good at luring in younger victims and has been described by the Dark Lord as having a silver tongue. Being that he enjoys having power over someone, Rabastan finds it particularly thrilling to pick out young students, especially ones considered "out casts", luring them in with kind words of understanding, and then using them for the Dark Lord's purpose. While he is fully capable of performing the Imperius Curse, Rabastan rarely needs to actually doing it since his legilimens and ability to manipulate people is so effective. He knows ways to trick teenagers and children into trusting him, and then abuse and exploit them. This is why Lord Voldemort decided Rabastan would be the best candidate to send to Hogwarts under the guise of being an Assistant/Remedial Professor.

History: The Lestranges come from a very long line of well respected and powerful witches and wizards. Rabastan's father, Renatus Lestrange, was a sorted into Slytherin house where he met a fellow student named Tom Riddle. From there, the Lestrange family entered a lifetime of devote allegiance to Tom Riddle, later to be Lord Voldemort, and the pureblood cause, though they were always careful to keep their family secrets just that. Rabastan's mother, Regina, was of the Rosier family. The two met at Hogwarts and married shortly after they both graduated and became members of the very first batch of original Death Eaters. His father's early loyalty led to Rabastan's high rank as one of Voldemort's most loyal Death Eaters. Rabastan was born first, very quickly after his parents were married, insuring further generations of the pureblood Lestrange name. His younger brother, Rodolphus, was born 5 years later and Rabastan was entirely uninterested. He ignored his little brother completely, sneering at the whiney, flaily thing whenever it got too close to him. Their relationship generally remained as such into his adulthood.

The only person Rabastan ever really formed any close personal bond with, aside from The Dark Lord, was his father. This was a bit unconventional seeing as Renatus did almost nothing but push Rabastan, never giving him any words of praise and expecting more and more greatness from his son. Rabastan's grades were never high enough, his spells never perfect enough, and Renatus would go on long tirades about how the boy needed a more manly build. Rabastan, however, basked in the ridicule, to the point of teetering on machocism. Rabastan would take everything his father said and work harder at it. This was unquestionably a precursory relationship to the one he ended up developing with Lord Voldemort.

In school, Rabastan was a perfect student. He was the top in almost all of his classes (except for useless subjects such as care for magical creatures, divination and, Merlin forbid, muggle studies) and one of Professor Slughorn's most cherished pupils, being inducted into the Slug Club immediately after his first term his first year in school. After he graduated, what made Rabastan to valuable to the Dark Lord are his wide variety of skills. Rabastan was a top scholar during his days at Hogwarts, having quickly become an expert at potions, charms, transfigurations, herbology, astronomy, runes, and, later on, perfecting the art of occulimens and legitimens. The later he learned with the aid of dark magic texts he stole from the library and using unsuspecting first years as test subjects and later releasing them after a quick obliviate spell. He worked hard in school to live up to his father's expectations and be the more prepared and useful to the Dark Lord immediately after graduation, which was why he was able to return to Hogwarts at the age of only 24 and be fully qualified to become the Assistant and Remedial Professor. Although he may have used a touch of Legilimens to secure Dumbledore's endorsement.

Now back at the castle, Rabastan uses his teaching position to pick out students who appear as though they might be useful to the Dark Lord, lure them in with specialized tutoring, and then gradually set up a trusting relationship before turning them into puppet's for The Dark Lord's use.
