{ A B O U T . T H E . C H A R A C T E R } Name: Lucius Abraxas Malfoy Age: Seventeen Gender: Homme Year: Seventh Face Claim: Jeremy Dufour
Canon or Original? Canon
Facial Properties: While the Malfoys have been known to have sharp, angular features in the past, Lucius seems to have inherited his mother’s softness. His face is long and blessed with round, protruding cheekbones that sit high on his cheeks. Despite having blonde hair – which is always soft and perfectly groomed – his eyebrows are of a dark colour, almost brunette. They’re quite thick, though constantly kept shaped and clean-edged. Deep-set grey eyes gaze out from under heavy eyelids. Despite the reputation of the Malfoys, Lucius’s eyes are not always “cold” and “calculating”. He doesn’t have a constant icy attitude displayed on his face; he isn’t a marble statue. Lucius is perfectly capable of showing emotion, and his eyes are often the first indicator to how he really feels. A long, straight nose sits centre of his face, and below is a set of rather-full lips. Inherited from his mother, no doubt, since his mouth is actually rather feminine-looking, but he doesn’t mind so much since they merely enhance his aesthetic appeal to women. Lucius has oddly endearing ears, for they’ve always been a big large and stick out quite noticeably. He considers them to be a flaw to his appearance, which he’s otherwise quite pleased with. Physique: Even as a child, Lucius was always tall and skinny for his age. Until puberty he was really a lanky thing, growing too quickly to stay in the same size clothes for very long. He’s now reached his full height of six feet, so while he isn’t the tallest anymore, he still has some height to him. Lucius has a bit of a triangular build: his shoulders are wider than his hips, though he’s really not that muscular. His wide shoulders are due to bone structure more than build, as he really has little muscle about him. No matter what he eats, Lucius hardly seems to gain a pound, as though he’s destined to be skinny forever. Not that he minds so much, but the fact that he can’t even gain muscle can be bothersome to him sometimes. Lucius is physically weak, and he knows it. He knows his best defenses are magic and intelligence, so he definitely spends more time flexing those skills than any muscle he does have. His torso is longer than average, tapering into narrow hips and skinny legs. Everything about Lucius’s body is long and slender, and since he carries himself proudly, he easily gives off an air of elegance and class.
Wand Type: Elm, dragon heartstring, ten inches. Wand Expertise: Lucius’s wand has a particular affinity for Transfiguration; it’s such a shame his interest in the subject is so very low. Patronus: Red lionfish. Beautiful, but poisonous. Boggart: Cecilia Greengrass. Of course, she doesn’t look like the lively girl people knew. Her eyes are pure white, the skin around them black and smoky. Her skin is pale and rotting in places, but all across her body is dried, blackened blood. And when she opens her mouth, all he can hear is a sickening, faint wail. Personality:
! proud Plainly put, Lucius is better than most of the people he’s surrounded by, and he knows it. He doesn’t waste time associating with people who aren’t worth his time. It isn’t simply his lineage and upbringing, it’s part of who he is. He knows he’s attractive. He knows he’s intelligent. He knows he’s talented. Lucius figures that he’s entitled to have a bit of an ego. There’s definitely an arrogant air about him, and yes, he has been known to turn up his nose at people who simply aren’t worth his time. What categorises them as unworthy is dependent upon different things, really. Mudbloods automatically are snubbed, but the occasional half-blood might not be. Depending on the status of their pureblood side, and if Lucius can get anything out of said half-blood, it’s entirely possible that they might not be ignored. Often, his sense of pride and dignity can make him do stupid things because it can blind him to reality. He can be so caught up and pleased with himself for something like figuring out a puzzling situation before someone else that he’ll be too busy boasting about it to focus on what comes next. His pride can get the better of him quite often, and often results in him being more embarrassed than the initial situation.
! diligent Once he becomes dedicated to something, Lucius becomes determined to finish it, and finish it right. He’s exceedingly thorough in almost everything he does. Research for schoolwork often takes him well into the evenings as he’s determined to get every bit of information he can out of it in order to achieve the highest grade. Unfortunately, as clever and diligent as Lucius may be, he does sometimes slack in his school work – though, it’s not that he intends to. His main problem is that he rushes himself to finish things. Take school, for example: he wants to finish his essays and homework and studying as quickly as possible, so despite how thorough he tends to be, he can and does miss things. There might be information in his notes that he intends to use as a part of his essay, but in his hurry, he might forget it. This used to be quite a big problem for him, resulting in more barely-passing grades than ones he could be proud of. It is, however, something he’s working on, and he’s determined to keep working at it until he can be the best. When Lucius has a task, he sets out to accomplish it.
! traditional Lucius believes in doing a lot of things traditionally. While he’s not the biggest supporter of arranged marriages, he can see the benefits of such a practice, especially in pureblood families. He’s not a promiscuous person, and doesn’t even date a wide variety of girls, because he’s not about playing the field. He’s not the most experienced person in the department of girls, because he feels like he doesn’t need to be. When Lucius takes interest in a girl, it’s not solely for her body or her personality or what sort of shenanigans they can get into together. He’s less interested in getting a girl into bed than into a wedding dress. It isn’t as though he’s in any rush to get to the altar, and he’s not against all relationships before the woman he marries, but Lucius takes his future and responsibilities very seriously. Any girl he dates has to be someone he can see himself marrying in the future, and having children with, and having a real life with. He’s against pre-marital sex, but he’s not a hard-core activist for it. He knows it’s not the end of the world if he does end up having sex before he’s married, and it’s not really a moral issue. It isn’t as though he’s hoping the wedding night is “special”, and he doesn’t expect his bride-to-be to be virginal either. Lucius’s main concern is having a child out of wedlock, especially a bastard half-blood from a drunken one-night-stand of exceptionally-poor judgement. He also doesn’t want to risk sleeping with some loose woman and wind up paying for it the rest of his life with some sort of disease, making him unsuitable as a husband and partner for whatever pureblood woman did want to marry him and carry on the Malfoy name with a true heir. Lucius isn’t afraid of dating or fornication, he simply doesn’t feel the need to constantly be with someone else to be comfortable and content with himself. He’ll date when he feels like it.
! clever Academically, Lucius is probably one of the brightest wizards of his year. He studies hard and stays on top of every assignment. Lucius knows that he has a responsibility to uphold the reputation and standings of the Malfoy name, and he knows that the best, most efficient way of doing that is to be intelligent. He has to be smarter than his opponents, because that is the only sure way to overcome them for good and to have earned permanent superiority. Lucius tends to follow a strict homework and study schedule, dedicating at least one hour a night to studying, and his notes are organised to almost a meticulous degree. He’ll take more notes while studying and compare them with his class notes, cross-referencing to compare facts and dates, and isn’t ashamed to ask questions if there’s something that clashes or something he doesn’t understand. The thing about Lucius that separates him from other studious minds is that he isn’t learning simply for the sake of acquiring knowledge: he’s learning for the sole purpose of being better than everyone else.
! serious To be honest, a sense of humour is something he doesn’t really possess – at least, not that he displays. He knows what a joke is, he just doesn’t find them to be funny. They’re stupid and juvenile. Sarcasm is pointless and wastes everyone’s time. There’s too much riding on him to do well and ensure that Malfoy stays a name to be proud of that there’s simply no time to joke around. Pranks are stupid and harmful and done only by those who have no future and will certainly peak in Hogwarts. The world is too harsh to not be taken completely seriously, and Lucius prides himself in having a good, rational head on his shoulders to help him get by. Any joke he wants to make is immediately quelled and forgotten, and the urge to laugh at anyone else’s joke is squashed – unless it’s either really genuinely funny, or he’s in a more chipper mood than normal. Of course, it can be hard to take Lucius seriously sometimes: his words are often dripping with irony, though it’s almost always without him noticing it.
! competitive A person doesn’t want to be on a team against Lucius. He’ll use every trick in the book to win. Whether it’s mock-Quidditch to wizard chess, Lucius has a desire to be the winner, and he’ll do whatever he can to achieve that goal. He’s not above deception, blackmail, bribery, or cheating, though he tends to cheat more-so than anything else. Lucius also has a tendency to turn innocent events into contests, not for the purpose of fun and friendly competition, but for the purpose of winning and being better than the loser. Losing is something he’s not used to, and it’s something he doesn’t handle very well. He’s the very epitome of a sore loser, and will sulk and snap and mope about it long after the competition has ended. Lucius needs to be the best, and the best are hardly losers.
! patient When there’s something Lucius really wants, he’ll do what he can to work for it, but he doesn’t lose his head if he doesn’t get it right away. He has the ability to patiently wait for things because he knows then that he truly deserved it and earned it, and the rewards will last longer that way rather than rushing to get something. He knows that the way to do it right is to take his time and not rush anything, because rushing leads to mistakes, and mistakes lead to failure. Of course, when people are involved, his patience can ebb a bit because of the sheer stupidity some of them possess, but he insists that’s not his fault. Lucius is willing to wait, and he considers patience to be important because it ensures that he doesn’t lose his head in a situation. He can rush when necessary, but he prefers to take his time. It isn’t laziness, it’s patience, and Lucius values it greatly.
! ambitious Lucius doesn’t have a lust for power, but he does have ambition. He wants to be in a position of power, even if he’s not the one who’s totally in charge, provided that whoever is isn’t an idiot. The truth is, Lucius honestly isn’t confident enough in his decision-making to be completely in charge. It’s not that he likes the security of having someone to back his decisions – well, that’s part of it. But the honest-to-goodness truth is that he likes the security of having someone else to blame if things go wrong. Lucius has far too much pride to admit when he’s made a mistake, and is more than willing to let someone else take the responsibility. Lucius is wholly selfish this way, since he’ll gladly take credit for things that go well, but will stand back if they start to go sour. If he’s under the direction of a good leader, he’ll be content with being his top man, but a good leader has to be stronger, smarter, and all-around better than Lucius. And, since Lucius has such high standards, it’s difficult to find someone like that. If he does, however, he’ll do whatever he can to risk through the ranks and be the one relied on most. He wants people to follow him without the risk of being the one to make a mistake.
! loyal Being a Malfoy, Lucius was raised with an extreme sense of loyalty. And, first and foremost, his loyalties lie with his family. While Lucius would never say that he’d die to protect them, if he was placed in such a situation, it’s highly possible that he would. Of course, he would exhaust every other method of protection first. Though he’s far too proud to admit it, Lucius would rather put himself in harm’s way than let any danger befall his loved ones. He isn’t a cold, empty shell: Lucius loves his family. Lucius’s loyalty is also prevalent in his dedication to his House, trying to earn Slytherin as much of a good reputation as possible. He can be quite biased in his Prefect duties, favouring Slytherin students over others, and it’s no question that he will support Slytherin over any House, regardless of activity. From Quidditch to simply performing well in class, Lucius is going to support green and silver, no matter what. And if he knows he can get away with it… Lucius isn’t above playing dirty to give his side the advantage. He’s not the bravest, most selfless person in the world, so he knows that if he was actually being tortured for information, he’d probably give it up, but it would leave him with immense guilt. Once someone or something has Lucius’s dedication, it’s hard to sway him – but he will choose his family over anything or anyone else.
! gullible Unfortunately, yes. Lucius will believe almost anything someone tells him for a moment or two. His gullibility is a sore spot for him and it’s definitely not something he lists as a trait when describing himself. It embarrasses him, and for someone with as much pride as Lucius, that’s simply not allowed. Of course, he won’t believe stupid things, like someone saying they saw a blue two-headed zebra in Hagrid’s hut – oh, that one he might believe. Anything too far-fetched to possibly be real he won’t fall for, but he’s definitely the sort to look in the direction where someone’s pointing even if nothing’s there, and he’ll believe something said to him if it seems plausible enough. Once Lucius starts to think about things, he’ll start to believe them less, though if the cards are played right he can remain tricked for quite some time before he catches on. He’s not an idiot, and will often sense when something is off, but if he doesn’t have a solid reason to distrust something said – especially by a person he’s taken a liking to – he tends to give them the benefit of the doubt.
! respectful If you deserve Lucius’s respect, you’ll get it, no questions asked. Are you from an ancient pureblood line? Respect. Are you wealthy? Respect. Are you influential? R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Lucius will treat each person with the amount of respect worthy to him or her. The way he acts toward a person can be wholly determined by how much respect for them he has. Maybe it’s a kiss-ass technique to ensure his positive reputation, but respect for others is something Lucius thinks is wise to have. Lucius can be shockingly polite and gentlemanly to those for whom he has respect, regardless of age or gender. His only stipulation is that he finds it impossible immensely difficult to harbour any such feelings toward someone not of pureblood descent. As well, Lucius expects to be respected in return, for he can’t really see any reason why he shouldn’t be. He’s a Malfoy, for Merlin’s sake. His family is ancient, pure, wealthy, and powerful in the wizarding community. He doesn’t expect people to lick his shoes – though he admits that’d be amusing – but he does expect to be treated with the proper amount of respect that he deserves, and Merlin help whoever thinks otherwise.

History:
! heritage The bloodline and history of Lucius Malfoy is far too long and tedious to remotely try to explain, especially since it’s quite simple to understand. Malfoy is one of the oldest, purest, most respectable names in pureblood wizarding society. Every blemish in the family tree has been erased, leaving their record virtually spotless. With their wealth, pride, and power, they’ve managed to earn themselves a place among the elite. More than that, the Malfoys are the elite, and heaven help whomever should forget that. With connections in almost every other strong pureblood line, they’ve managed to intermingle with every corner of the pureblood society. As for himself, Lucius has a healthy mixture of pure blood, as his mother, Porrima Malfoy née Yaxley, hails from just as prestigious and elite family as his father, Abraxas Malfoy. Whatever first cousins Lucius has are from his mother’s side, though, as Abraxas was an only child whereas Porrima was the youngest of three children, and had two very protective brothers. Porrima was, however, quite young when she married Abraxas, having just entered her twenties, whereas Abraxas had chosen to live the bachelor life for nearly ten years after graduating from Hogwarts. Despite the fact that a Malfoy-Yaxley marriage would be advantageous and smart, there were some doubts from both sides of the family due to the considerable age gap. Would Abraxas have different priorities than Porrima? Would she be too immature for him? Pureblood marriages were the only way to go, of course, but Abraxas’s mother had been quite soft at heart, and brought him up with love and care: she taught him that in order to last, a relationship had to be strong and healthy and loving, and she wasn’t the only one who wondered if there would be enough of that in the Abraxas-and-Porrima marriage. However, the two managed to prove them wrong, maintaining a solid relationship for three years before Porrima became pregnant with Lucius. It was a hard pregnancy, very rough on Porrima’s health, and the delivery would have killed her if the Healers hadn’t prepared in advance for complications. Because of her difficulties, she and Abraxas decided not to risk having more children. Besides, they had their Lucius. They had their heir, their son, and he was perfect. They didn’t need more.
! childhood Lucius Abraxas Malfoy was a fussy baby, and it was clear from the start that he would be a handful. If he wanted something, he had to have it. When Lucius didn’t get exactly what he wanted, he would scream until it was in his hands. Or mouth. Or wherever he wanted it. And Lucius always got what he wanted. If his mother wasn’t showering him with affection, or his father wasn’t buying him gifts, then his grandparents were just as bad. He was a spoiled boy who took everything and everyone for granted, and not much has changed today – he just has less of a tendency to throw tantrums. As an infant, however, Lucius had a set of lungs on him that could rattle windows if he was angry enough (or perhaps that was simply an early sign of accidental magic, though the former seemed more likely). He was exceptionally picky with his toys, for if they didn’t look better than every other child’s toy, he would refuse to play with them. Manners were something he lacked for years: hearing a “please” or “thank you” from his mouth was a rare thing until Porrima explained the value of being courteous. He’d always been a bit of a show-off, performing the trickiest moves possible on toy brooms – basically, the sharpest turns at the highest speeds – or attempting real magic with a toy wand. His family doted on him excessively, and despite being spoiled to the core, Lucius truly did love them. Lucius had it drilled into him from an early age that the Malfoys were never second-best to anyone, and so no matter what he did, Lucius had to be the best. If there was someone better than him at anyone, Lucius would figure out some way to best him. Working harder? Puh. That wasn’t his style. Ever since he was a little boy, Lucius would use sabotage, blackmail, or bribery to get his way – though of course, karma is a wicked mistress, and the methods he once used for gain would soon take away.
! hogwarts As was expected, Lucius was immediately Sorted into Slytherin upon his arrival at Hogwarts. For the first two years, he acted as though he was some form of royalty, practically strutting about the castle barking orders at other students, including Prefects. It was clear that he was wholly unaware of just how ridiculous he looked, and how mind-numbingly annoying his behaviour was. He tried out for Quidditch in his second year, hoping for the Seeker spot, but was placed as a Chaser instead. Infuriated, Lucius wrote to Abraxas, demanding that he help him get that spot on the team he so deserved. Despite a bribe of buying the school shiny new Quidditch balls, and having a “chat” with the father of the team captain, Lucius remained a Chaser – but he was made reserve Seeker, so should the actual Seeker mysteriously fall ill or sustain injury prior to a game… Lucius spent weeks thinking of what he could do to prove that he deserved that position more than anyone else. He settled on a mild poison, slipping just enough drops of it into the Seeker’s drink at breakfast on the day of the game to make him vomit and unable to play. Pleased with his methods of sabotage, Lucius stepped up to the position to play as Seeker. Slytherin was doing well, and it appeared as though they would win when Lucius spotted the Snitch hovering near the ground. He tore after it, the opposing Seeker following, and Lucius was inches away when it flitted off elsewhere. Desperately he tried to pull his broom up, but it was going too fast to stop, and Lucius crashed to the ground hard, losing complete consciousness. When he came to, his arm was in a sling, and Madam Pomfrey informed him that he had injured his shoulder too badly to play Quidditch for the rest of the season. Stubbornly – or stupidly – Lucius ignored her and continued going to practices, which only served to increase the damage to his shoulder. By third year, he was forced off the team permanently, for he was finding difficulties performing the simplest tasks with his arm after practice. This incident proved to Lucius that being pureblood didn’t make him invincible: he was still human, just a slightly better one than everyone else. Lucius began to mature, and he dropped the “king of Slytherin” attitude over time.
! hogsmeade When rumours of a Dark wizard started scattering about with the news that he was murdering Muggles and Mudbloods, Abraxas instantly voiced his support to his family. He did not, however, express an interest in joining said wizard. He currently held a position close to the Minister for Magic, and didn’t want to do anything to jeopardise his job or family. Abraxas was aware of how dangerous of a position he was in, and attempted to do whatever he could to stay out of trouble. Perhaps it was just a case of “all talk with no walk”; it didn’t seem to matter, however, since Lucius was getting into trouble of his own at school. He had joined a secret club known as the Society of Avid Frog Lovers, which had already wreaked some havoc on the school by the time he learned of its existence through Regulus Black. Every member was pureblood and supported the Dark Lord’s cause, and Lucius was an active and willing participant in their plans for the future – including the fateful attack on Hogsmeade toward the end of the 1977 term. Led by Bellatrix Black, the members of the Frog Lovers set fire to carriages and several students were injured, and some even killed. Among the dead was Ravenclaw fifth-year Cecilia Greengrass, a pureblood with whom Lucius was loosely acquainted. Using Sectumsempra, a curse picked up from Severus Snape, he viciously attacked her – and left her to die. At the time, Lucius thought almost nothing of it. She was just one more body among the wreckage. But as term turned into summer, and Lucius spent time at home alone, he began to have trouble sleeping. It didn’t matter what type of dream he was having: at some point, a skinny redhead would appear, and Lucius would force himself awake before he could focus on her face. It began to scare him, and for a while he didn’t realise what was going on. But when he saw an obituary for Cecilia in the Prophet, he realised that she was the girl in his dreams, and he remembered with horrifying accuracy the events that transpired in Hogsmeade. It hit him then: someone was dead, and it was because of him. It wasn’t a freak accident that he was blaming himself for. No, he had murdered her in cold blood. She had a name: Cecilia Greengrass. She had a family, just like him. She had friends who were probably missing her. She had a face that was sweet and innocent and covered in freckles. She could have passed for a Weasley. But that didn’t make it easier. Lucius had killed someone, another human being, and he couldn’t take that back. The nightmares started plaguing him each night, and toward the middle of summer it reached a point where he couldn’t sleep for more than three hours at a time before jerking awake in cold sweat. Lucius became quiet and withdrawn, a fact his parents were quick to notice and attempt to remedy with gifts. He accepted them and yes, he did perk up a bit, but the nightmares continued and Cecilia’s face rarely left his mind. Even now, with school underway and Lucius in his final year, a continuing member of the Frog Lovers and one of Hogwarts’s Prefects, he’s haunted by the memory of the girl whose life he brutally stole only months ago.
