INTRODUCTION
Group #1: Hufflepuff Fourth and Fifth Years Group #2: Slytherin Fourth and Fifth Years Discussion: Interpreting Patterns in Smoke from Burned Incense
It was a young batch arriving just now, Hufflepuffs and Slytherins, oh my. Sybill Trelawney did so enjoy working with young students whose minds were only freshly opened to the wonders of the Sight - although Slytherins tended to be a tricky bunch. Not to say that she had a preference or anything like that, lord no, she was just a professor, but they always did seem more skeptical of the wisdom she offered to them. Not as bad as the Ravenclaws who simply refused to believe in her powers, she thought with an offended sniff, but difficult all the same. The Hufflepuffs were a nice group though. She smiled a little smile at that, adjusting her large glasses and getting to her feet as the students finished climbing up through the trapdoor and finding their seats around the room. "Hello, class!" she enthused, discarding the large gestures of hands today as she was too busy holding her warm shawls around her thin frame. "Today we'll be burning incense to study the smoke patterns," she instructed, nodding towards the trays set around the room. "You can turn to page 132 in your textbooks for illustrations of some of the patterns you might see, and explanations of what they foretell," she advised them in her gravest voice, pulling her shawl even more tightly around herself. "And, of course," she added, almost as an afterthought, though she way she drew herself up proudly begged to differ, "You may always consult with me if in need of any help interpreting the signs of the future."

Emme walked into the Divination classroom perfectly on time, as usual, and found a spot near the front of the class, hurriedly sitting on it and placing her bag lightly next to her, resting her arms on the table and looking up at Professor Trelawney as she explained what they were going to do that day. Her eyebrows raised in interest and she looked more intently at the incense trays set around the room. Well, that seemed exciting enough, she figured, standing up and going to get one tray for herself, then setting it down on her table. That was the thing that irked her about Divination sometimes. You couldn't just follow instructions and study and practice all you wanted, you actually had to have the talent to be able to get good grades and see the things you were supposed to find in whatever you were looking at. Of course she did, have the talent that is, but still...well, on to work, she supposed, looking around for the first time for any of her friends.

All right.
All right.
He could do this. Right? It was just... well, really, if Fabian could do it, Gideon could. That was how it went: big brothers were there to show the younger ones how to grow up and stuff. Well, Gideon had never actually seen Fabian actually ask a girl on a date or whatever, but he'd been with... with her for like a year, so that had to start somewhere, didn't it? Gulping, Gideon climbed the last couple of steps into Trelawney's classroom and looked around, grinning sheepishly when he noticed that most of the class was there already. Ah. Emme was near the front. Bugger, it'd be hard to do this unnoticed, but maybe Trelawney would see the Grim and be distracted. He'd been the "lucky one" last year, with here a Grim, there a Grim, everywhere a grim Grim, and he and Fabian had a running joke for a while on near-death experiences. He wondered who the victim would be this year. Apparently Trelawney seeing their Grim ran in the family, since she'd seen his quite some time ago. Hopefully she left him alone this year, though. Hopefully she left Emme alone, too, because he wasn't about to do this with her watching and hovering over them. Oh Merlin. His belly clenched a little as he sat down, but he smiled at Emme and set his bag down, taking a seat next to her, hoping she didn't notice how nervous he was.
Nervous, because he was going to ask her to be his girlfriend this class.

Frowning as she tried to recollect the fire-lighting spell, what was wrong with her today? She always did these things in a snap! Fire was like, first year material. Oh, right! Emme pointed her wand at the incense to burn it up when somebody suddenly sat down beside her, and she looked up, surprised. "Gid!" she exclaimed, a little too excited for just having seen him about three hours ago at lunch time, but not really caring, because there he was, sitting next to her, looking as gorgeously handsome as ever, and wearing this small lopsided smile that she'd come to love. And of course, she was feeling tingles all around her body, and that familiar stomach-tugging feeling as she smiled brightly up at him. "You're late," she pointed out smugly, turning back to the incense and lighting it up.

"Haha, yeah, sorry about that." He gave a small half-chuckle and rubbed the back of his head. "Hope you didn't miss me too much." Scooting a little bit closer, Gideon peered down at the incense and took a small sniff. Oh. Well. That smelled good. Kinda earthy, which he liked. Outdoorsy. Little feminine but that was all right, no one had to know what was going on inside his head, right? Right. Besides, the fortune was gonna be fake anyway, since he was making it up to ask her out. Hopefully she'd like it, right? ... Oh crud, where were the lyrics? He fished his textbook out of his tote and a little slip of parchment fell out. Catching it, he opened it up so she couldn't see and stared at the words, trying his best to memorise them. Then, taking a deepish breath, he looked from Emme to the smoke and feigned boredom. "So. See anything yet?"

\ She was trying really really hard not to stare at him too much, like she'd been willing herself for the past like, three weeks or something, as she scrutinized the smoke patterns that were slowly drifting upwards from the small flame on her incense stick. She folded her arms in front of her and stared. Emme glanced from the smoke to her textbook and back up, trying to make sense of images, and sighed, leaning back a little. "No," she admitted, looking up at Gideon and shrugging a little. "But I just started so I'm sure that once it's you know, burnt a little more, I'll start seeing some sort of coherent shape...
" she trailed off, muttering and looking again at the smoke, then turned to look at his. " You?"[/blockquote][/blockquote]

Okay. Now or never.
Gideon pulled out his wand from his pocket, aiming it up at the smoke from under the table and trying to angle it so that Emme didn't see it. Now what was the spell for... oh, right. While Emme distracted herself with her book, Gideon muttered the charm to create smoke from his wand tip under his breath and moved his wrist like he'd practiced. Slowly, the lyrics to that song Donnelly mentioned started to form. Oddly enough, despite having all the words sent to him, he'd ended up using the ones Donnelly had originally written when he suggested the song about holding hands and being her man and whatnot. For some reason, those had been the words to stick out to Gideon; he felt they expressed most what he felt, and so those were the ones he'd use. The writing was messy, but still legible, and Gideon grinned a little proudly before nudging Emme.
"Actually," he said softly, pointing upward, "I do."

Huh?
Emme looked up as Gideon nudged her and the first thing she saw was a lot of smoke in the air. Briefly, she wondered if he'd burnt something, before her vision adjusted, and she backed her stool a little from the table to look properly. They were...words? Narrowing her eyes, Emme tilted her head to make sense of them. 'Please...say to me...let me be your...man.' Oh my God. Oh my God. No. No way. No way. She kept on reading, and indeed, 'let me hold your hand.' The Beatles. Lyrics. In smoke words. Above her head. Out of Gideon Prewett's wand. She absolutely gaped at him, her lips pressing together lightly as she held her breath, blinking furiously, and feeling her cheeks warm up as she met his gaze.
His eyes were all shining and bright and he had that totally irresistible grin on his face that made her just want to lean over the table and kiss him senseless, but she held her stance, freezing up, not knowing what to do, or what to say, or how to react. Was he...asking her out? Like, with THE BEATLES LYRICS? Oh, my, God, she was in love. Emme swooned a little and caught herself, allowing a smile to creep across her face and she bit her lower lip nervously, nodding quickly, still smiling.

Dear sweet Merlin, she nodded. She was smiling and she nodded. This meant... oh Merlin's pants, this meant that they were official, right? Officially dating. Boyfriend and girlfriend. Oh god. Haha, wait till Fabian heard about this one. And Gabby! Oh gosh, Gideon couldn't wait to tell her. Smiling broadly, completely ignoring the actual assignment this time, he tucked his wand away before reaching for Emme's hand under the table and taking it in his, squeezing her fingers gently. She was his girlfriend now, and he could do that whenever he wanted.
Haha. Yeah. He liked that feeling.

Oh my God.
Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my God.
Oh my God.
Emme wasn't thinking very coherently at the moment, because her head was feeling woozy and every time she glanced up, the smoke with the words that meant that Gideon liked her like that and wanted her to be his girlfriend were right there, reminding her, and oh my God, she was his girlfriend. He was her boyfriend. He...he'd just asked her out.
And yes, maybe she'd been asked out plenty of times before in her life, but even she had to admit that nobody. Nobody, not one single guy. Not even those seventh years that had plenty of experience with plenty of girlfriends. Not even them. Nobody had done it in a way that was so cute, so sweet, so simple and so thoughtful and totally and completely her and unique and special like that. She was on the verge of tears from the cute. Emme felt a hand under the table and let out a breathy laugh, taking hold of it and feeling Gid squeeze it, giving her a smile as well. Oh my God. Her heart was beating a thousand miles a minute, and her stomach felt like it was being wrenched out of its place. She giggled again because oh my God and smiled even brighter, if it was possible.
The rest of the class was definitely not aware that she'd just been made the happiest girl in school right now.
The Beatles.
Gideon Prewett, you're amazing.
