{ A B O U T . T H E . C H A R A C T E R } Name: Deaglan (deck + lan) Murray Age:17 Gender: Male Year: Sixth Face Claim: Kevin Zegers
Canon or Original? Original
Facial Properties: Deaglan is a person with a very strong jaw and therefore strong facial features. His jaw line, which is very square and a line, is the most prominent feature of his face. He was also blessed with very blue eyes, a strange genetic trait considering that both of his parents have very brown eyes. Apparently he had a grandfather with blue eyes, but one still has to find it, even so, rather curious. His eyes also look deeply set into his face, and they are a bit small and oval. Deaglan has a slightly upturned nose, but not upturned enough for anyone to generally notice. He will probably always maintain a youthful look even well into his years, given his happy-go-lucky smile when one chances to see an open-mouthed grin. With thick eyebrows and an almost ever-present stubble on his chin (that he might be quite proud of), most people would begin to look very hairy, but Deaglan is careful to maintain his shaggy brown hair enough that he doesn’t begin to look like any animal. Under times of stress, he tends to sport a longer medium brown haired look, but usually it is cropped above the ears.
Physique: Deaglan comes in at five foot eight inches, a little below the average height of a male in England but taller than the average Irishman. He’s considered on the short side to some, but let’s not mention that. Although Deaglan comes across as someone with a rather bulky frame and big arms, it’s not exactly natural. He works hard to maintain that shape, and his figure without working out, though it would still be slim, might appear a little scrawny. It’s with much effort that Deaglan was able to take his physique from short pubescent boy to a big muscled teenager who looks larger than he actually is. Deaglan has a longer torso and longer arms than he does legs, but he chooses to wear the appropriate attire that effectively hides that setback.
Wand Type: Hazel, 11 ½ inch, springy. Wand core of a peacock feather.
Wand Expertise: Good
Patronus: A common pig. Not exactly the terrifying type of patronus one might like to conjure when going up against something nasty, but it still gets the job done. The big, who is very large and pink, is actually very representative of Deaglan’s nature. It is friendly and social, avoiding conflict whenever possible. It is also smart, well mannered, and enjoys luxury. Deaglan, being the kind of person that he is, likes his patronus.
Boggart: Deaglan doesn’t like to face boggarts (who does?) but when he does, it’s hard to say what will come out of the trunk it has been locked in. Depending on the year and his current mood, his boggart can change. If you think about it, this makes sense, as most people have more than one thing that makes them nervous or afraid. There is not one person or thing in the entire world that is so frightening it completely outshines anything else to Deaglan, therefore, I really couldn’t say anything else about the form of a boggart in front of him.
Personality: Deaglan is a confusing bloke. He doesn’t mean to be, but maybe he does. It’s possible that even Deaglan doesn’t know what he means when he says something half of the time he says it. Yes, that was confusing. He is neutral on almost all accounts. In other words, Deaglan is very hard to persuade one way or another on any topic, no matter the level of seriousness it may have. To simply put it, making a decision is against every fiber of his being. Because the world is constantly changing and he is changing with it, what you might think about something or someone one day could drastically change the next. Therefore, making a cemented decision on anything is rash. Whether or not he thinks this deeply on any subject, or if it is just my way of trying to explain him to you, I don’t know. Pick any topic that has two or more sides and bring it up to him, and I highly doubt you will get any confirmation one way or another, even on topics that are rather necessary to decide upon as a normal human being. For example, demand that Deaglan tell you whether he likes girls or he likes boys and he’ll simply laugh at you and tell you it depends on the day, despite behavior that may be very to the contrary. Ask him his opinion on the rising wizarding conflict between Death Eaters and muggle sympathizers and he might say he can understand both viewpoints, even if immediately afterwards he asks a muggle-born friend out to lunch. It is unlikely that a person will ever see every single side and personality of Deaglan. He likes to appeal to each person individually, and as such, that is the part of his personality that will come out for you. He doesn’t find this at all fake or deceiving, because everyone behaves differently depending on who they are around. He very much likes to please people and will be the most agreeable toward that person if he can at all help it. It pleases him in return to get along with someone, or help them in whatever way he can, and he will do it freely, just short of murder, of course. At least that is the hope, as it wouldn’t please the murdered person very much. Deaglan appears to take on the thoughts and attitudes of every person he meets, only adding to his evolved and complicated nature year after year. The more he learns about other people, the more behaviors he adopts from them. I can tell you one thing, and that is that you cannot be bored with Deaglan. He will not allow it. He may frustrate and irritate the most opinionated of wizards, but he has a way of turning things around. This isn’t to say that his desire to please people keeps him out of trouble, because when two very different people converse and have to very different thoughts on Deaglan, things can become confusing rather quickly. He is often accused of fraud, lying, deception, and playing to people wiles to get what he wants. Deaglan would deny each of those traits to his grave save one, and that is lying.
To lie or not to lie? Lying is a normal and significant part of any person, whether they would or would not like to believe that, is completely up to them. He can lie, if that lie would suit the other person, or would keep Deaglan from exposing himself. To him, all people want to be lied to. They may say something different, but no one really wants to hear the truth all the time. A truthful world is a most harsh one, and life is not existent so that everyone in it can be miserable. Sometimes a lie feels better than any truth, even if that lie is exposed. Who would want to hear that they are fat, ugly, lazy, stupid, hated? Only a masochist, and in which case, if they would enjoy it, Deaglan could give them that too. But, most people do not like to hear the entire truth. Secrets are important. They are important because they keep the balance. Deaglan has noticed that in every truly effective relationship, secrets are kept. It is healthy and fruitful for a good relationship to last. Unlike so many others, he doesn’t resent the fact that he himself keeps secrets, oh no, he embraces it. Everyone is ultimately happier that way, are they not? He doesn’t care much for brutal honesty and fidelity. Thus far, Deaglan seems to be, as far as personality goes, as neutral of a person, neither good nor bad, as his views of the world are. It is vital for him to keep that balance inside of himself as well. Because he keeps secrets, he can be deemed a rather sneaky type of person. Fortunately for Deaglan, even when there is conflict of interest between him and several other persons, it all works out one way or another in the end. That is because everything has a conclusion in life, and if you are willing to accept that you can’t have all that you desire and you can give up and compromise at least a little, people will be happy and satisfied with that, unless they are superbly selfish. It’s hard to say why Deaglan is as lucky as he is, but maybe it’s that he isn’t looking for anything in particular, so any outcome can be a good one if he so chooses. He’s a bit of a floater in life, coming and going in and out of other people’s days when he wants, or more likely, when they want him to. Because he is rather consistent in being, of all things, inconsistent, he can come across as disloyal. That is a viewpoint that not everyone shares. If loyalty is extremely important to you, Deaglan, in the manner of his desire to please people, will be by your side as long as you want him to, until you ask him to go away, and then he’ll be gone, just like that. No questions. His versatility makes Deaglan a lot of friends, and very easily.
Deaglan likes the concept of families, and enjoys being around other people’s families immensely. The interactions are wonderful, for the good and the bad. His own family life is strange, but it works for him. In large groups of people, Deaglan is much quieter than he is in a one-on-one conversation, because with many people at once, it is a lot harder to find one person they would all enjoy equally. He smiles and does this and that, whatever is considered polite, but even in a large group, he often picks one person, seemingly randomly, to focus on. He has the ability to understand people very well. He can perceive the way they feel about something the more he talks to them, even if they do not say it out loud. He is a respecter of space, meaning that if someone would like him to leave, or would like him to stop hitting on them, he will give in immediately to their wishes. Most often however, this is an infrequent occurrence, and when it does happen, they end up liking him because he does what they ask. Now, Deaglan doesn’t always do what a person asks him to, he just likes to make them think he does. Whether you really do or not isn’t really significant. Again, it’s how it is perceived. If someone washes the dishes but no one sees, it’s like it never happened. Well, the same thing could be said about not doing something. If they think you did it – you did. Deaglan is pretty good about being on-time for things and responding to your letters right after he has received them. Keeping up with all the relationships he has is a bit of a balancing act. If he wasn’t busy, if he had nothing to do at all, Deaglan would go out seeking it. Being involved in one thing or another is what makes Deaglan, well, Deaglan. He is easily amused by people, all people, with their behavior. Deaglan is really a pretty good natured fellow when he’s neutral, but again, if someone doesn’t like that about him, it can always change. I suppose it takes a lot of daring nerve for Deaglan to weave tales and relationships the way he does, but it comes naturally to him, and he wouldn’t tell you otherwise. Whether its courage or just foolishness, it’s fairly hard to say. He really doesn’t have a particular goal for what he does or says, other than to satisfy someone. If he and they both get something out of it, Deaglan couldn’t possibly see what was so wrong with it.
He can wait a great deal of time for something to come to pass if he needs to. He has patience for people; people who are stubborn in their ways and take a lot of time to get around to something. It doesn’t mean Deaglan would wait forever, and he certainly would have other things he would be doing at the same time, but he can be very, very patient. Deaglan himself is not very stubborn, which is certainly a result of the fact that he has nothing to be stubborn about. If someone doesn’t have strong opinions about anything, they have no reason to not be swayed one way or the other. So, how does Deaglan deal in romantic affairs? Well, as with almost everything else, he’s rather – wait for it – neutral. It is very true to say that Deaglan likes to flirt, charm, and pursue a variety of different people. He takes great pleasure from it, because each person prefers a different way to be “wooed”, and sometimes, they like to be in charge. With some, he is very shy and reserved, letting them take the reins, and still some others he can be aggressive and extremely forward. Because he can play both of these traits very well, it makes sense to assume that in the end, Deaglan is very un-shy. He is perfectly fine with sharing just about everything you could think of about himself. He is so capable of being charming that it isn’t a wonder that people fall for him. He has no qualms about being in a relationship, in fact they can be very rewarding, but he isn’t particularly faithful. Actually, that depends on what you consider “faithful.” He stands by his significant other, helps them when they need help, and can behave as the perfect boyfriend if that’s what you like. On the other hand, he probably has secrets of his own. Suppose there is someone else, someone that you may even know, who is terribly shy, and they’ve never been romanced, but they want it so desperately. Deaglan would surely help them with that, whether he’s attracted to them or not, while still dating you. He just won’t tell you about it, and he’ll avoid the subject should you suspect. Because, as we have stated before – that won’t make anyone happy, that awful thing called the truth. Whereas if you remain in the dark, you’re perfectly content, and so are all the other people that Deaglan is also in a relationship with. And, of course, so is Deaglan. He could love a person very much, very strongly, and still being seeing someone else. It’s a very strange state of mind. There is nothing evil or manipulative about that is there? He really doesn’t think so, otherwise he wouldn’t do it. Back to the earlier question of whether Deaglan prefers boys or girls. When it comes down to it, Deaglan definitely has a preference for woman and those are the people he feels romantically for. That isn’t to say, if it would please a guy, that he wouldn’t “hook up” with them. He would, if the time and situation suited it. He considers himself the type of person who brings everyone together in the end. If Deaglan can across a very dysfunctional relationship between people and the ending result was that they all hated Deaglan but had forgiven each other? He could walk away happy, he really could. You see, calling Deaglan “good natured”, or “patient”, “contradictory”, “indecisive”, “manipulative”, “loyal”, “disloyal”, “refreshing”, “confusing”, “pleasing”, “complicated”, or anything else you have in mind could never quite cut it. The only way to describe Deaglan is to say that he is very, very, Deaglan-like.

History: You must lead an interesting life when you have a parent who is in a fairly famous, wizarding Rock N Roll band. It is even more interesting, I might add, when that parent is your mum, or as some Irish would call it, “mammy.” Deaglan was born in Armagh Ireland, a medium sized town which is well known for its rich historical past. To really know something about Deaglan you would have to go back to his parents and how they first met. Neither one of Deaglan’s parents were born or raised in Armagh. Deaglan’s mother, Claire, was born in Lurgan Ireland, a northern isle town, not of a very reasonable size, but not quite considered a small town, either. Her family was of rather humble means although they weren’t terribly poor. Claire, instead of going to Hogwarts like other Irish witches and wizards did, was homeschooled. This is because she was not easily controlled and the old pair (her parents) feared sending her off would mean she would never return. She never had a taste for schooling, none at all, despite knowing that it was important. Claire could very be the reason for Deaglan’s own contradicting personality. She was into music and excitement, anything she could get her hands on that meant daring adventures. There wasn’t much to be done in Lurgan, so Claire often went off on road trips without telling her parents to nearby cities, where she could see concerts and enjoy the nightlife. Claire was and still is crazy about music, and she began a band when she was fourteen. It took some time to get notice (because it took some time to get any good), especially during an age when rock n roll wasn’t around and Claire was ahead of the times. Indeed, a girl in rock would never have made it, if she hadn’t been a witch, because witches and wizards had already discovered rock n roll and were deep into the spirit of it, without the help of the unknown Elvis Presley. Claire, intent on being the star, was the lead singer and guitarist for her band, and it was with a handful of Irish luck that seemed to run in her family that Claire’s band got noticed. After undergoing several name changes, they finally settled on “The Vipertooths.” Vipertooths, if you didn’t know, are a type of dragon from Peru and, being a rock band, they felt the need to settle on something hard and edgy. Claire, with her charismatic and really, plain strange personality, got a lot of wizards attention and they began to rise to stardom. When she was nineteen, the band began to tour, travelling to the melting pot for Wizards – London, England. This is where Claire met Deaglan’s dad, James.
James. James was also a bloke born in Ireland who, unlike Claire, was a wizard who attended Hogwarts, not only because his parents endorsed it, but because he liked it – a lot. James is the sort of character who always has a thirst for more, more everything, just like Claire, but his has a little more substance to it. He is good natured and slow to anger, whereas Claire is fiery and passionate. At first glance, putting them together would seem like water and oil, but they complement each other too well for that. As a child, James’s family moved a few times, but he spent the majority of his summers back from school with them in Loughton, England. He has several siblings, all of which he still denies he can put the names to, and each one of them as different as can be from the last. While James was a little more well-off than Claire had been, his family still faced the same financial struggles as any middle class family. His parents didn’t have a lot of social status, and on the whole, they were a rather boring and predictable wizarding lot. James enjoyed experiencing new things, anything that was different than his life, but he was very naïve to it all. Some things tended to come as a bit of a shock. He could be a frustrating eldest son to his parents because, as soon as he had set his mind to something, he would back out. He could not make a single decision, even with all the opportunities in front of him. After graduating from Hogwarts with very high marks, for example, instead of taking a internship in the Ministry that was offered to him, James moved to the nearby city of London. He worked a minimum wage job for no other reason than he hadn’t quite made up his mind yet. It was a good move in the end, because he soon became enraptured with an Irish-born wizarding band touring in the area, The Vipertooths. It wasn’t just their band that he was particularly interested in either, but the main singer, Claire. Of course Claire was too common of a name for her, and she had already settled on the stage name “Radical.” Without saying so, to this day Deaglan thinks it the most stupid of names. James started saving up his wages only to spend them at the end of the week to go to all of there shows. He was one of their biggest fans, but he was a fan with class, something a little different than you would typically expect to see at a rave party. Claire, or “Radical”, began to become familiar with the fan’s face. He was attractive to say the least, and one night she invited him backstage. They fell fast and hard for each other, and even as The Vipertooths’ became more famous in the wizarding world, and band members left and were added, James stood by Claire. They may not be traditional, but that is perhaps why they work so well.
Jump ahead a few years. Claire and James never got married, but they lived together as life partners. Marriage didn’t really seem like something that fit who they were. Claire, whose band was thriving stronger than ever, became pregnant unexpectedly. They took it in stride, and even though it wasn’t the best of timing, they were excited about it. Of course, Claire’s pregnancy didn’t keep her from touring. James, who was more or less her spouse groupie, went on the tours with her. It had already been planned a long time before that the band would go back to their roots and show their appreciation for Ireland, who got them started. So, pregnant or not pregnant, Claire continued singing through the months and only until it became a very dangerous idea to continue performing under strenuous conditions did she stop. Claire and James rushed to the hospital one night in Armagh Ireland, where after several hours of labor, Claire gave birth to a son, whom they gave the Irish name Deaglan, pronounced “deck-len.” Claire took a few months off from the band to take care of her new son and bond with him, but once she was well enough again, she went back to performing. James was a bit of a stay at home dad and he didn’t mind it at all. Two years behind Decklan came another child and a younger brother for him to play with. The two boys were and are rather similar in personality, but of course each has their differences. Deaglan doesn’t feel like he missed out on anything in his childhood. He got to spend time with his daddy, a luxury that most sons miss out on. He also had a mammy who was around enough that he didn’t feel neglected of a woman’s love. Her lifestyle was exciting, but ever since the day she looked into those little round eyes of the baby in her arms, Claire( who changed her stage name from Radical back to good old Claire), had a new love of her life. Music was still important, but her children were her main priority, and playing with the band gave them the kind of money that she wished she had provided her opportunities with when she was a little girl. James and Claire throughout their entire relationship have rarely fought, giving sway over Deaglan’s opinion that relationships are healthy when they have secrets. When Claire would sometimes spend weeks away playing with the band, Deaglan had the idea that she might have had countless affairs, and he was alright with that. It made Claire miss and be happy when she came home again to James. Sometimes, you just need to get out a little and spread your wings.
Deaglan’s childhood was mostly spent in Armagh where his parents decided to settle down. They liked the look and feel of the town, because it was a way out of the spotlight, a place for the children to be without being harassed for having a famous parent, and it felt like home, to both James and Claire. Deaglan did get to travel every once in awhile to other parts of Ireland, England – the British Isles in general. Because his family lived in an area in Ireland that had more muggles than wizards, it wasn’t too hard to avoid being known as the child of a famous singer. Even after attending Hogwarts, where a lot of more students were aware of The Vipertooths (even if at this point they were just known as being “old”), Deaglan doesn’t mind it. He embraces it, really. It makes him interesting to say the least. Deaglan does have money to spend because of his rich parents, and he doesn’t mind in the slightest about being a little flashy with it. His mammy is very opinionated while his father is not, and Deaglan definitely takes after his dad. Most people liked Deaglan as a kid. His indecisiveness was considered endearing and silly, even though even as a small tyke he had behaviors which were strangely more mature than the regular child. Because he grew up in Ireland, Deaglan has an Irish accent but it is more subtle after years of being in Hogwarts. While Deaglan’s mother hates being in school and James embraces it, Deaglan appears to take a very neutral ground on it. However, he does like to be away from home, because away from home means it is quite okay to be several different people all at once. His brother is used to this by now, and seems more tolerant of it than anything else. Deaglan began to exhibit wizarding powers at the age of six, and has always had a preference for charms. It is certainly the subject he excels at in school. When Deaglan was eleven and began Hogwarts, people couldn’t quite make him out or know what to think of him. Even the hat spent a considerable amount of time on his head before making a decision. His brother’s own sorting was much swifter. Deaglan is a more than decent singer and he can be quite the performer, even though the thought of fame and following down his mammy’s road has never much appealed to him. Books can also be rather dull, but he gets on fine at school and has slightly higher than average marks on his exams, if only by a little bit. Deaglan prefers not to show a keen interest in anything at school, liking better to leave the students to come to their own conclusions, and shape his very personality.
