{ A B O U T . T H E . C H A R A C T E R } Name: Emma Adelle Wislon Age: 14 Gender: female Year: fourth Face Claim: Elinor Weedon
Canon or Original? original
Facial Properties:
Emma’s face almost always gives away how she is feeling. Her eyes are a pale, almost silvery, shade of blue and usually tell her emotions to anyone that takes the time to look. Emma’s smile is often found on her face, conscious, or not, when she isn’t speaking. Her complexion tends to be a bit pale, especially during the cooler seasons. During the summer, however, her face is covered in freckles that become more and more pronounced as the season gets warmer. In the past Emma has tried to cover up her freckles, but has been quite unsuccessful, especially when they darken. As for her hair, Emma has light blonde hair that almost reaches her elbows when she stands up straight. Her hair has never been quite straight or quite curly, but always in between the two. After a while, Emma has just let her hair be, because, although she tries to force it one way or the other, her hair always gravitates toward the middle. Emma has always preferred to keep her hair down, but she has a tendency to put it up during any physical activity.
Physique:
Like many girls her age, Emma is neither extremely tall, nor short, neither extremely thin, nor large, but in the middle, which happens to be frustrating for her. She is a medium height of about 5’5”, but expected to grow a couple more inches. As for her body shape, Emma is on the small side of athletic. She doesn’t like her body shape, very much, though. Emma has been trying to make improvements for a while, but is afraid of what others might think of her if they knew. She is fairly in shape; she likes to run long distances as a form of physical activity, which gives her some stamina, but almost no strength. Emma is not very strong or particularly quick, but she can push herself to go a long way for a long time. Also, Emma has small hands and feet, which she doesn’t mind, especially because they make movement for her quite easy.
Wand Type: willow, unicorn hair, 11 ½” Wand Expertise: springy and good for charms Patronus:
Emma’s patronus is a fawn. She has only produced her patronus a couple of times, but the fawn would be easily recognizable to Emma. The fawn was rather small, but graceful and quick. Emma guessed that the animal, if it was not a patronus, would have been unsteady on its feet and quite clumsy. The fawn’s back was a dark shade of brown with white spots, while it’s stomach, legs, and head were a light shade of brown. His eyes and nose were charcoal black, and, despite the innocent, youthful look in his eyes, Emma felt a sense of maturity and experience in his movement and presence.
Boggart:
When it comes to fears, Emma has several things that scare her. However, if she were to ever come across a boggart, it would most likely take the shape of a werewolf. Ever since a cousin of Emma’s was attacked and turned into a werewolf, she became terrified, not only of werewolves themselves, but of becoming one. The life of a werewolf is incredibly difficult, with the judgment, fear, and the danger that a werewolf puts there loved ones in. Emma couldn’t decided what would be worse: being judged by everyone you don’t know and putting those you love in danger, or the physical pain that she would feel being attacked and bitten. In all honesty, she would have to encounter a boggart to realize which option scares her more.
Personality:
It’s hard to really describe Emma’s personality because she is always changing and trying to adapt to situations, however, some of her personality traits are quite stable. Emma is intentionally kind, but her actions don’t always have that same effect. She tries to make new friends, even though it doesn’t always work out that way. Emma likes to be social and get to know the people around her, even if that means making enemies. No one enjoys having enemies, but it certainly makes life interesting, which is perfectly fine for Emma. The only thing that she really needs around her is friends. Without someone to talk with and spend time with, Emma might just go a little insane, not that she already isn’t a little insane in the first place.
Anyone who meets Emma would learn a few things about her relatively quickly. One of those things is that Emma is willful; when she knows what she wants, she really wants it, even though her indecisiveness causes her to take a while to get to that point. She likes to achieve, whether it is academically or socially. Emma doesn’t let much change her mind about it, except for, perhaps, when someone close to her provides a really good reason to give it up. If it had come from a person that was not that close to her, however, Emma most likely would not pay their opinion much attention; she has a tendency to be a little stubborn, like that. Along with being willful, Emma always wants to do be doing something. She hates having idle time because she always feels like she could be doing something.
Another part of her personality that is somewhat evident is perfectionism. Emma, whether good or bad, has a need for perfection in most of the things in her life. Her school work and appearance are the two most affected areas of her life. School work and academics are a measure, for most people, anyways, of achievement and hard work, which is something Emma wants. Appearances are similar, in the sense that they show sense of self-worth and pride; this is another thing that Emma wants. However, it’s difficult to safely say that she possesses pride or self-worth; Emma’s opinion of herself is quite up and down. It is safe to say, though, that Emma is a little insecure, but she rarely reveals her insecurities to anyone short of her best friend. She hates her lack of self-confidence, so she does her best to pretend that she is quite self-assured and knows what she is doing, even though it’s not always the case. Perfectionism, as it does for most people, is a source of great stress in Emma’s life. It’s quite unclear whether this has had more of a positive or negative impact on Emma.
One the last parts of Emma’s personality that can usually be counted on is her stubbornness. As mentioned earlier, she almost always has kind intentions, and she tries to like everyone she meets. However, when she decides that she doesn’t like someone, she is quite stubborn about not liking them, but she almost never tells the person about her feelings toward them. It’s almost unfair to the object of Emma’s dislike, because she doesn’t give that person much of a chance to win her back. Emma would be annoyed by just about anything that person says or does. It’s kind of a strange situation, however, when someone she dislikes agrees with, or has the same opinion as, Emma. She probably wouldn’t know what to do or say, so in all likelihood, Emma would probably ignore the person, change the subject, or drop the conversation completely. Emma isn’t a bad person, she just is a bit protective of the people she cares for, and when she doesn’t trust someone, that person isn’t likely to get close to Emma enough to make her feel even slightly comfortable.
Likes: + meeting new people + freedom to do what she wants + having someone she can trust + her extensive closet + being awake early in the morning + being awake late at night (but not both at the same time) + having lots of choices + a sense of perfection + feeling protected + protecting people she cares for Dislikes: – feeling trapped – feeling insecure – uncertainty – being out of shape – the middle of the day – unfamiliar surroundings – swimming – not being wanted – being ignored – most meats
History:
Emma Wilson was born in a little town just a few miles east of Amiens, France to a Claudette and Oliver Wilson. Claudette was born in and lived in France her entire life and was adamant about her children being born in her home country as well. Oliver, a native Englishmen, had no problem moving to France to be with Claudette. They had three children altogether: Damien, Emma, and Alexandre. Damien, being six years older than Emma, was always the protective type of older brother that Emma could look up to. Alexandre, who was four years younger than Emma, had always been the kind of brother that looked up to Emma and wanted to be like her. He was always the one to do whatever Emma asked of him and not think much of it.
When Emma turned eight years old, Claudette and Oliver decided that they wanted their children to know both sides of family, so they began spending their summers in a small town just north of Nottingham, England, with their father’s family. There, Emma had girls her age to talk with, despite the fact that Emma spoke French much more fluently than English. These summers, Damien, Emma, and Alexandre would find adventure in a country totally foreign to them, while improving their English. However, Emma’s time in England was not always positive. While she was there, her father’s sister, Agnes, acted toward Emma with disdain. Agnes always saw something that could have been better when it concerned Emma, which made her feel very insecure. She just wanted to please her aunt, because she was the only one that rarely acknowledged anything positive about Emma. She never could find out just why her aunt always put that pressure on her, but Emma tried everything to make sure that there was nothing negative she could mention.
As it came time for Emma to start school, she was signed up to go to Beauxbatons, just like Damien and her mother. She was so excited to go and see everything that her brother described. Unfortunately, Emma’s grandmother in England was getting really sick. Oliver wanted to move there permanently to be with his mother. Emma was really upset that she would never see Beauxbatons. Damien graduated and Emma turned eleven in the same year; that very summer, the Wilson family moved to England. Emma and Alexandre were to go Hogwarts. Emma wasn’t sure how she felt about attending this different school. Damien had told her so much about Beauxbatons that Emma already loved the school and was so ready to go there. Oliver tried to comfort her; he told that she would like it at Hogwarts, but Emma wasn’t sure. She had so many questions she wanted answered before she went, but her father wanted her to experience it for herself, without outside influence.
The first four years of Emma’s time at Hogwarts went better than she expected. Language wasn’t as much of a problem as she had expected; Emma’s accent improved and she knew plenty of English. It turned out that Hogwarts was a really nice place to go to get away from the pressure her father’s sister and just be herself. However, she did miss Damien and Alexandre. She was used to Damien leaving for school, but she always had her younger brother. Luckily for the both of them, Alexandre would be joining Emma at Hogwarts next year, when he was eleven. Emma quickly found her favorite subjects: Defense Against the Dark Arts and Charms, and learned where she fit in at the school. As expected, first, second, and third years don’t exactly have a high status at the school. Fourth years are almost respected by the older students, which really excited Emma. She was ready to be noticed by more people than just her year and below. Emma was ready to get going.
Sample Post:
It was finally the morning that Emma would be off to Hogwarts for her fourth year. Her excitement was evident all throughout her house and her room, which happened to be quite torn apart. Clothes, books, shoes, and papers were scattered all over her floor as she searched for the last few items she needed to take. This year of Hogwarts was going to be the best so far, Emma knew it. If only she could find her new diary, the one she bought just the day before at Flourish and Blotts, she would be ready to take her things downstairs and eat breakfast. Emma had spent most of the night before packing the supplies she bought yesterday into her trunks, stuffing what she could around her already packed clothes. Claudette, Emma’s mother, made sure to pack her daughter’s clothes for her; Emma could never find a way to fold and place the clothes in a way that everything fit neatly enough. It did not matter much, though, because her trunks were usually opened and closed several times to add miscellaneous things that Emma forgot to pack. She went through her checklist quickly in her mind: Clothes? Of course. Shoes? Yeah. Books? Definitely. Parchment, quills, and ink? All carefully packed.
After what seemed to be hours, in reality, one, Emma was packed and ready. All Emma needed was to get her things downstairs. “Alexandre,” Emma called, “could you come help me get my things downstairs?” Thump, thump, thump. Emma could hear her younger brother walk across the hard floors upstairs to the front of her door. He knocked and called Emma’s name. She walked to her door, almost tripping over a pair of shoes she decided not to take. Emma opened the door and smiled. Alexandre smiled back at her and said, “Emma? How long will you be gone?” Emma instantly felt a little bit bad. She knew how it felt the year before she was supposed to go to Beauxbatons and Damien went. Emma wanted to go, too. She wanted to see what Damien told her about and not have to wait anymore. Emma was tired of waiting. She could only imagine how Alexandre felt. He wasn’t really the jealous type, but he was the only one in the immediate family that hadn’t gone to Hogwarts or Beauxbatons yet. He wanted to know why everyone was so excited for school each year. What was so great about it? Lots of things, of course. Emma just didn’t want to tease him with the details of the place that he couldn’t go for another year. “I’ll be back for the holidays, I promise.” Emma smiled again as she handed Alexandre two of her bags.
Once Emma and Alexandre got downstairs, they set Emma’s things by the bottom of the stairs and walked straight to the kitchen. The smell of breakfast lingered in the air, teasing the two the moment they reached the first floor. Eggs, toast, cereals, and orange juice were waiting on the table as Emma sat down with her brother. Once everyone had eaten, things seemed to slow down a little bit. There wasn't much left to do, except to put Emma’s things into the muggle car and drive to the train station. Emma sat in the living room and held her tiny kitten that she had bought the day before. As she stroked the soft fur, she worried about the upcoming year. Emma knew the year would be a good one, hopefully, but what was there to expect? She hated not knowing. It was easy to figure that her first and second years, she would be mostly ignored and left to discover Hogwarts herself. Now that she was in between, did that mean more attention by older students? Did that mean that the professors expected more of them? Less? She didn’t know. What Emma did know, though, was that she couldn’t wait for Alexandre to join her. It would be nice to have a family member with her that wouldn’t expect so much of her at school. If it was anyone else, Emma wouldn’t have been nearly as excited.
Emma sighed as she heard her father call her to the bottom of the stairs. She stood up, still cradling her kitten in her arms, and walked to the stairs, taking a detour through the kitchen to take Alexandre with her. “Emma, your things are in the car. Are you ready to leave?” Emma looked around and said, “Yes, Papa.” Everything was packed, put away, and ready. Emma was ready, despite her uncertainty about the upcoming term. She walked to the car with her family, everyone carrying something. Emma slid into the backseat with Alexandre and smiled as she answered some of his questions about what his first year at Hogwarts would be like. “You will like it. I know you will.” The car started to speed up quickly. They weren't far from the station... “But what about the classes? Will you tell me about them? Please?” Emma shook her head; Alexandre already knew the answer to his question of why, so he did not ask. Emma smiled at him; it was hard to keep things from him with his curious excitement, but he would have to wait. Emma did not, though. She was at the train station. Her father and brother helped her carry her things onto the platform and then onto the train. Emma smiled and waved and the train pulled out. She was going to miss them, as she always did, but they would always be there. Hogwarts, on the other hand, would not.
