ABOUT THE CHARACTER Name: Ethan Cartier Age: 17 Gender: Male Year: Seventh Celebrity: Kevin Zegers Adam Brody
Canon or Original? Original
Facial Properties: Ethan has curly brown hair that almost always semi-long, so he is constantly running his right hand through it - a nervous habit of his. His face is normally open, showing most of his emotions and his smile is always wide and sincere. He has a straight Roman nose and no moustache or beard whatsoever, he doesn’t like his appearance when he wears them, but on the mornings you can normally see some stubble showing, as he always wakes up late and never gets enough time to shave and breakfast. So he puts off shaving until lunch, when he skives off eating and holes up in his dormitory. Possessor of a strong chin, that when set means his stubbornness is in the way of a sensible decision.
Perhaps his most notable trait could be said for his eyes, and not necessarily for the beauty in them, but for the sharpness that is characteristic of them, and the fact that they reveal in blunt, brutal truth that he's one who doesn't tolerate much when it comes to testing his patience. His character really manages to shine through them, and even if he's been told about it, Ethan doesn't mind that much. Why? Merely because with him it's always been like that. You have to know what to expect of him, because he can't give anything more. And his eyes? They're basically challenging you to tell him otherwise. They're bold, defiant and open, something that Ethan hasn't yet learned to take care of. You can describe Ethan by just looking into his soft, brown eyes.
Physique: He’s 6’1”, weighs 170 lbs, has fair skin and a small tattoo that reads Pours Toujours wrapped around his left wrist. His hands are medium sized, long and graceful fingers and he always wears a silver band in his ring finger, also in his left hand. Those are the small facts that anybody can know about Ethan. Those are the ones any of his acquaintances could rattle off the top of his or her head if they cared (or paused) enough to do so. But what about everything else? What about the fact that his posture is normally slouching, just so he doesn't stand up from the crowd so much, and how it's his own secret rebellion to all the hard Duelling trainings where he has to sit, walk, stand up ramrod straight? What about the fact that his fingers are slightly crooked from cracking them so much all the time? Also, his arms are tone and firmed from his Quidditch player years, as well as his back and legs, but then again, what Quidditch player isn't? He has a birthmark, right at the base of his neck in the shape of a small circle, something that for some reason has always bothered him, since it's a trait he shares with his dad and the rest of the Cartier family, apparently.
Born in the States grew up in London, but most of his family is French: his accent can’t be placed. Sometimes his years of living in London will shine through and he will have a normal cockney accent, but others, when strong emotions are running up and down his spine, French is the only thing that will spew from his mouth. Whether it be a thick accent, or the language itself, if Ethan is cursing or talking in a heavy accent, you know something's up. Simple details anyone can learn through observation, but yet, not many know this. On typical days, his voice is normally silky with a clear enunciation, his diction up to par with anyone, really, no hint of a trace in it. When said voice grows forcibly soft, though, you know something's made Ethan tick. Control is everything, and Ethan doesn't believe in raising his voice. Of course, extreme situations call for extreme measures, but yelling and generally losing his cool is something that rarely happens. Composure at all times. It's something that's taught and learned from childhood. There's no other way to obtain it.
Ethan likes commodity, he considers it a top priority in his life, and his clothing reflects just that. He likes dark colors, preferring a dark blue most of the time, or even a light brown with which to accentuate his eyes - aren't they his best trait? His built is lean but has a toned musculature as he trains in Defense ever since he was ten years old, and as previously mentioned, plays Quidditch unstoppably. Ethan mostly wears muggle jeans and t-shirt, but on formal occasions he does wear a wizard’s robe. There's no way he'd be able to put an appearance in front o f his whole family with the rags he wears on a daily basis. Yeah, Ethan likes his commodity through and through.
Personality: Ethan Cartier grew up in a household full of people, even though he’s an only child; he was always surrounded by people, so he isn’t exactly shy. He carries himself with quiet grace, confident in—if not in anything else—himself. He trusts his intellect, but doesn’t really take much to reading. He researches the topics that interest him, but nothing else. Being rational himself, he knows his strong points as he sees his weaknesses. He knows his qualities and his faults, but always has an optimistic view of life. That's where his strongest point lies: knowing himself. How many people actually take the time to do that? They like knowing about their strong points, their fortes, but when it comes to weaknesses, they all do their best to turn a blind eye. Why? Because nobody likes to find out they aren't perfect. Ethan, though? He's come to accept everything he is, with his flaws and highlights. There's not much left to do, is it?
He likes to do things well, putting effort into the job, always expecting the best results, therefore always presenting (and receiving) his best. If it something that calls to him, there's nothing that will stop him from the project. Whether it be planning a new Quidditch strategy, a new Defense position...if it's in him to make the best of it all, don't doubt he won't do it, merely because he can. He's an overachiever if there ever was one. He doesn't like mediocre marks. When he gives his all, he expects the same in return. Of course, this couldn't be limited only to his school marks. It has extended to the rest of his life like an uncurable disease, and it has been the cause of a lot of fights around his house...and among his friends too. He wants everything or nothing. You can't do things halfway after all, can you?
That's why friends are hard to come around these days, says he. Of course, that also has a lot to do with the fact that he also has trust issues, and is extremely paranoid as to what he should tell other people, and what he shouldn't. In the end, they're always out to judge him, aren't they? All of this is based around an event that occurred to him earlier in his life, and that not many people know. Those who did get a wind of that, however, proceeded to do just that: judge. And because of that, innocent Ethan Cartier found himself right in the bull's eye of snide remarks and hushed whispers behind the back of hands. Can you blame him for not wanting to trust? Around people he doesn’t know he is cool and collected, always detached in a friendly way. Did that make sense? Ethan is apparently an open person. He can talk to a stranger - small, inconsequential talk -, but when things start becoming a tad more serious, there's nothing you can do to trespass the natural barriers he erects around himself, unless he himself decides you're worthy and lets you in. Even after that, he will still walk around tiptoes, because see, he's just paranoid like that. He will smile at an unknown face, stop to talk about Quidditch to some of his teammates, pull a joke or two with the pranksters, heck, even ask out a girl without so much as a single string attached. He's friendly. He's just not friendly. Don't expect to be his best friend after that small talk. Don't expect much if he hasn't decided to let you in. Once he has, though, be prepared to receive, receive, receive, receive. Because Ethan is always willing to give, no matter what.
If you couldn't tell from the previous paragraphs, Ethan doesn’t take friendship lightly. He honors the simplest of secrets, living by the adage of “give what you’d like to receive.” Like any normal human being has many weaknesses, but there is only one that can really destroy the foundation his life has been set on. Ethan’s Achilles heel goes by the name of Ariadna Romanov. He had a lifelong friendship with this cousin, who now resides in France and attends Beauxbatons. But something happened. Doesn't it always? The perfect friendship they shared during their infancy was inminently brought down by a series of events that really don't make much sense when they stand alone. Few people know the real incident behind all the drama that went down, but those who doonly shake their head in pity for the boy. And even though it didn’t make any radical changes in his personality, it’s the main reason he doesn’t trust just about anyone. He fears only himself, as he has had a rather tough life and he has learned to get past most of his fears, getting over them methodically, and now only having himself to dread.
You know that little saying, 'Liar, liar, pants on fire'? Well, if you lied to him, it is most probable that Ethan is the one doing the lighting up to your clothing. Saying he hates lies is putting things too lightly to be taken seriously. There's something about being lied to, the whole falsehood to it all, the malice, the intentions, the...it makes Ethan tick. It makes him tick like he never ticks with anything else. If he's put your trust in you - and even if he hasn't - and you lie to him; don't expect forgiveness any time soon. You're lower than the drit on someone else's shoes if you do something as stupid and idiotic like that. You can't expect to go around spreading fabricated stories and not have anything as retribution. Not when Ethan is involved. Better watch out, matey.
And yes, this does bring us to the next point: dramatism. It's huge in Ethan's life. As a matter of fact, it can make up about ninety percent of his personality. Why? Because it's always tingeing all of his traits, impermeating it with its exaggerated after-effects. Something small can be turned huge in a matter of seconds in Ethan's over-analyzing mind. Like the lies, for example. Or the whole 'Giving everything, I expect the same in return' line. See, he's always been like this, so intense, and extreme and borderline controlling, that it's a habit he isn't aware (sometimes) that he possesses. It affects most of his life aspects, and yet, Ethan hardly notices it. It will always be there, won't it? Why even bother?
Ah, yes, I knew you'd wonder. Love life. It's pretty nice, isn't it? When it happens, of course. Which isn't that often. Casual dates don't count for anything, simply because Ethan doesn't want them to. Steady girlfriends? That's a different matter altogether. Those are few and far in-between, because having a girlfriend implies letting people in, and well, by now we know Ethan isn't so fond of that. The one's he's had, however, can't really object much. He firmly believes that if there's an emotion there, you shouldn't hide it. Express it freely, liberate yourself. And when he feels something for his girlfriends, he tells them; sweetly, constantly and most importantly: honestly. He showers them with gifts and attention, merely because that's the way he believes women should be treated - with the utmost respect and care -, and because when he feels for someone, he will always show it. Even in the most miniscule detail. Why even bother trying to hide it? It doesn't make sense.

History: Ethan’s relationship with both of his parents is exceptionally good. Even though they are divorced, they are still friendly for Ethan’s sake. They divorced when Ethan was 15, so he didn’t take it too hard, as the marriage between them had always been strained. Andrea Brueghel, Ethan’s mother, had become pregnant outside of marriage. She didn’t ever really love Louis Cartier, but back in those times it was frowned upon to see a single mother, so she married the father. They were cordial enough, but there wasn’t any love lost between them. Ethan had always expected something like their divorce to be coming, so he wasn’t really surprised when one day they announced that he was going to have “two homes”. Crissandra Cartier, one of Ethan’s two aunts never married. She’s the youngest one, having been born to Genevieve Lauder much more lately than the other two offspring; consequentially, Ethan likes her best as he can sometimes relate to her really well. Crissandra lives in Italy and Ethan gets to visit her every summer for two and a half weeks.
Even though Ethan has French ancestry, his name was picked up by his mother Andrea. They had moved to the States when she was seven months pregnant and he was born there. Their stay there though, wasn’t to last much, because as soon as he was born, Louis decided that they would now live in London. Ethan grew up surrounded by his family, mostly from his father’s side, as his mother is estranged to her own family because of the pregnancy she had outside of marriage. Therefore, French is an automatic language for him, even though he only uses it around relatives, not much in public.
Ethan started showing his signs of magic exceptionally early in his life. The day he learned to walk, his carriage broke in half; the day he said his first word—"wand"—a vase in the living room exploded into a million shards. Ariadna was his playmate as toddlers, since they were born on the exact same date. They grew up together in the family’s estate in Slumming Spinner’s end—Cartier Chateau—but Ariadna’s family—his aunt DeMerina Cartier and his political uncle Adam Romanov, moved out of the Chateau and went to France. Ethan remembers her fondly, even though he hasn’t seen her since they were both ten, year when his father decided that he should start Duelling training. Louis Cartier hired a Dark Arts expert and he was as hard to him as if he was a grown up. He said this was for his own good, to help him shape up to be an honourable man. The days of work were hard and tolling in a ten year old, but as a result, when he received his Hogwarts letter he went with all the confidence in the world that he was well prepared for anything life had to throw at him.
In an effort to ingrain some knowledge to the boy about his maternal family, Andrea Brueghel related stories of times of old. Legends, myths and folklore were passed down to him by word of mouth and Ethan devoured every single one. His great-grandmother had been a gypsy, but she had run away with a ‘white man’ to form a family when the clan had been camping at the outskirts of an American town. Ethan’s mother regaled him with detailed anecdotes about how a faerie had always accompanied her when she was just six years old, and had told her she was going to have a male child and that she was to name him Ethan. In his father’s opinion, those stories are ‘utter shite’. Andrea’s grandmother was a drunkard who got herself pregnant by ‘a randy old bugger’ and the ‘poor guy’ had to marry her in order to keep her virtue. At this, Andrea normally answers, ‘yeah, well, except this time around you were the drunkard, no?’ Which even though is not true, makes Ethan admire her because she always has a remark to shoot back to his father, and he knows his father respects her for that.
The tattoo wrapped around his left wrist was made when he was fifteen years old, his mother’s present to him in that birthday. She has one in her right wrist that reads ------. Together they read "Together For Eternity” in English.
ABOUT YOU Name: Alva Years of Experience: 'Bout one ^^ Sample Post: Slowly, Narcissa turned around, a small smirk forming in her lips as she faced her sister. So there she was. Not so lost after all, was she? But Narcissa waved the question as to where she had been away from her head. No need to know. Besides, she wasn't sure she would like the answer. With Trix, you were never sure if you would like the answer. Giving a light chuckle, Narcissa arched an eyebrow. "I wasn't the one who was lost. It's not my fault you can't keep track of yourself," she said airily, apparently focusing all her attention on her sister, but her eyes kept flickering around every once in a while, her eyes open for any member of her House.
Currently, Narcissa didn't exactly have any interests, but she knew Bellatrix did. One of the Lestranges, or so she'd been told by her sister during the summer holidays, so she wasn't all that thrilled about going back to Hogwarts for another absolutely boring year. The classes and the people...everything was always the same. It drove Narcissa up the wall at times, but there was absolutely nothing she could do, was there? Hogwarts was just one step towards her main goal: being a Potion Mistress. And if being under the tutelage of Slughorn worked, well so be it.
At that moment, the train whistle blew, and Narcissa winced a little at the piercing noise. They shouldn't do that with her so close to it, dammit! With a roll of her eyes, Narcissa picked the handle of her wheeled cart and beckoned to Bellatrix. "We better get inside, before this picks up pace and leaves us out here." Most of the students were already in and even the latecomers were already grabbing the compartments left. And now that she thought of the comparments, Narcissa scowled. Great. If they had to share with someone else, she was positive she would grab Trix's wand and curse someone.
