{ A B O U T . T H E . C H A R A C T E R } Name: Fabian Horatio Prewett Age: 18 Gender: Male Year: Graduate (former Gryffindor) Face Claim: Matt Cohen
Canon or Original? Canon (supplemental)
Facial Properties: Fabian’s said to look like a younger version of his late father, a comparison he doesn’t mind in the least. He has a pleasant-looking face, with dark hair and eyebrows. He tends to keep his hair short, though sometimes he lets it grow out a bit because he doesn’t care to get it cut that often. His ears are rounded, with small lobes. The most noticeable difference of his face from his father’s is the color of his eyes, which are a soft green instead of brown. He also has somewhat sharper features than his father and brother, especially his nose, which looks more like his mother’s. Underneath his nose is a pair of defined bow-shaped lips. Fabian has an open expression most of the time, and he smiles often. He has his father’s smile, and when he’s happy, it lights up his whole face in a very obvious way. When he’s teasing, his lips often form his trademark grin, reflecting his playful nature. Fabian usually keeps his face clean-shaven, unless he oversleeps, forgets, or just doesn’t feel like shaving.
Physique: Fabian is tall, having surpassed even his father’s adult height to stand at 6’4”. He weighs a bit over 200 pounds. He’s never been fat, although he has a tremendous appetite. Besides having a fast metabolism, the other main reason for this is that he works out more than the average person. He enjoys exercising and has developed a rather impressive physique as a result. Yes, he’s muscular. No, there are no Engorgement Charms at work here. Fabian’s worked hard to develop his strength and stamina, and now he possesses an assortment of sculpted muscles which are quite a bit larger than the average male’s, although they aren’t ridiculously bulky. He also has a high tolerance for physical pain. Even though he’s sure his mother wouldn’t approve, Fabian does have a couple of tattoos. Two five-pointed stars, outlined in indelible ink, are situated just above and on either side of his groin, the product of a drunken idea to impress one of his girlfriends (the girlfriend, actually). He barely even remembers getting them, though, and he doesn’t like showing them off because of where they are and the fact that he doesn’t consider them to be manly. Clothing-wise, Fabian dresses plainly most of the time, because his family can’t afford that many nice clothes.
Wand Type: Alder, 14”, thick and sturdy, quite powerful, dragon heartstring Wand Expertise: Good for offensive spells Patronus: Doberman pinscher Boggart: Each of his family members, dead Personality: Fabian is a rather cheerful young man who absolutely loves to laugh. He’s energetic, fun-loving, and easygoing, always up for a good time. He’s very friendly, with a pretty jocular nature. He likes to tease people a lot, especially his friends (and even more especially, his brother). He’s not mean-spirited about it, though, and if someone seems to be hurt by something he meant as a joke, he’ll try to apologize. Fabian prefers to look on the positive side of things, even when he knows the reality isn’t that cheery. When something really bad happens in his life, however, underneath his optimism lie layers of uncertainty and negativity. He tries to keep these feelings hidden because he doesn’t like to make other people upset. He doesn’t talk about his problems or share heavy emotions with just anyone. He especially doesn’t like to show feelings of sadness around other people, and because he doesn’t always get those emotions out, it can take him a long time to get over tragedies in his life. However, when other people are sad or upset, Fabian’s instinct is to comfort them. He often makes (sometimes lame) jokes to diffuse anxious situations, which can result in awkwardness or embarrassment on occasion.
Oh, he’s charming, all right, but he can’t be the smoothest talker in England. Fabian often flirts playfully with girls, but sometimes he lacks a bit of finesse. Although this sort of awkwardness is more apparent in his brother’s interactions with the fairer sex, Fabian has been known to put his foot in his mouth on several occasions. He usually ends up looking a bit sheepish, which some girls even find endearing. Fabian has had several girlfriends and even a fling at one point (which wasn’t his idea). He is an affectionate and devoted boyfriend who greatly enjoys making his girlfriend happy. At this point in time, however, he’s staying deliberately unattached due to a broken heart. He was devastated by the breakup of his relationship with his last girlfriend, the first one with whom he ever fell in love. He’s still not fully over her, although he’s trying to move on. He hasn’t given up on love, but he just isn’t keen on searching for it right now.
Family is very important to Fabian. He loves his parents and siblings very much, and he would go to extraordinary lengths to keep them safe. His relationship with them is warm and loving. He values his family’s positive opinion, and the one person whose approval he would hate to lose the most is his mother’s. He tries hard to be a son who makes his mum proud, and, so far, he’s succeeded. Like many purebloods, Fabian feels pride at having such a notable heritage. It isn’t at the level of arrogance, but it’s there because of how much family means to him. His heritage is part of his identity. Although he is a pureblood himself, Fabian honestly doesn’t care about a person’s blood status when forming relationships. There are plenty of purebloods he can’t stand and many Muggle-borns and halfbloods with whom he gets along fantastically. Besides, even though his bloodlines are well-respected, his family’s lack of wealth has caused them to fall out of favor with pureblood society. Even though he’s related to many of the other pureblood families, Fabian doesn’t consider most of them true family because of how easily they can turn their backs on kin they used to call their own.
Fabian is very protective of people he cares about. He feels a great sense of responsibility for the welfare of his family, and he’d feel like a complete failure if he ever let anything horrible happen to any of them, especially his younger brother. He also doesn’t take kindly to insults or threats directed at his family members or close friends. He’s generally quite friendly, but his temper can be quite explosive with the right provocation. Pushing certain buttons of his can cause instant rage. Fabian can be a little quick with his fists when angered—though never toward a girl, except in self-defense—and he’s gotten in several scuffles with people who chose to offend him. He also dislikes bullying, and if he sees it, he’ll quickly interfere with either his wand or his fist.
Fabian is not very careful with his belongings, mainly because he doesn’t have a lot of things that are very valuable. He’s sensitive about being poor, because it comes with feelings of inadequacy and shame. He has difficulty feeling that he’s as good as other people when they can afford nice things and his family has to scrape by. However, after spending so many years in a humble lifestyle, he’s become accustomed to not always getting what he wants, and he’s learned to swallow his jealousy of those who can afford so much more than he can. Things he’s had for a long time tend to become quite well-worn, and items he passes down to his brother are almost never good as new. Although he doesn’t mind a bit of mess, Fabian is not so much messy as he is disorganized. He doesn’t have the patience to be meticulous about keeping things in order. While he might be a bit lax about taking care of material possessions, when it comes to being responsible for other people, he does take things seriously. For instance, even though his little brother is growing up, Fabian still acts the part of big brother. He isn’t perfect, but he tries to be a good role model for Gideon, as their father was to him. He has a strong sense of duty, and he usually tries to do what he thinks is right.
Fabian is fairly intelligent, although he’s more street-smart than book-smart. Despite not receiving high enough marks to be top of his year, he performed reasonably well in school. He recently passed his N.E.W.T.s with the required qualifications to start training as an Auror at the Ministry of Magic, a feat of which he is very proud, as he has wanted to be an Auror since he was young. He takes pride in his accomplishments, although he’s aware of the skills he lacks. Fabian is a competitive person, and he enjoys rising to a challenge whenever he has the opportunity. When he and his brother were growing up, they made games and contests out of anything they could, using the rivalry to push themselves further. Although Fabian’s grown up quite a bit, he still holds some of that mindset.

History: Horatio Prewett loved all his children and was proud of all of them, but there was a special kind of pride that came with the birth of his first son. He and his wife Ursula already had a daughter, so they were pleased to discover that their second child was a boy. They named the boy Fabian and gave him the middle name Horatio, to act as a partial namesake. Little Fabian was welcomed lovingly into the family, although his sister Molly, older by nine years, had some difficulty learning how to adjust for a new sibling’s presence in the house. As a baby, Fabian required a lot of attention. He was very active while awake and had no qualms about making it known—loudly—when he wanted something. An energetic child who loved to play, he kept his parents quite busy taking care of him. When he reached toddlerhood, he became even more rambunctious, tearing around the house at every opportunity.
When Fabian was almost three, his mother gave birth to another son, Gideon. Like many children suddenly forced to share the spotlight with a younger sibling, he suffered some jealousy when his parents’ attention became more focused on the new baby. He became a bit of a troublemaker for a period of time shortly after his brother’s birth, but that didn’t last too long. As he grew a bit older, his mum was often kept busy caring for the new baby, so he began to spend more quality time with his dad. Horatio enjoyed his son’s company and spent much of his free time engaging Fabian in fun activities. They could often be found outside running around, playing catch, playing made-up games, or even going for short broomstick rides. By the time Fabian was five, Horatio had taught him how to swim, fly, and play Quidditch. He’d even taken his son into the kitchen with him numerous times to sneak food when Ursula wasn’t looking. At night, Horatio told Fabian stories about his job as an Auror, censoring parts that were too sensitive for his son’s young ears and embellishing other parts to make them more exciting. The two of them formed a strong bond that only fathers and sons could have.
Young Fabian looked up to his dad. Horatio was his hero, and Fabian wanted to grow up to be just like him. So when one of Horatio’s fellow Aurors came to the house and told them that Horatio was dead, six-year-old Fabian’s emotions were thrown into chaos. He stalked angrily about the house for days while his mother and sister grieved in their own way. One day, little Gideon, who didn’t yet understand the concept of death, asked Fabian when their dad was coming home, and Fabian snapped. It infuriated him that his brother couldn’t get it through his thick skull that their dad was never coming home again, and not because he didn’t love them anymore, but because he was dead, just like the Puffskein Gideon had smothered to death in his sleep. When Gideon kept asking about their dad, an annoyed Fabian yelled at him and made him run crying to their mother. Ursula told Fabian not to be mean to his little brother and that he had to be understanding, but that just frustrated him more. He was sad and angry that his dad was gone, and, being so young, he didn’t know how to deal with it in a healthy manner. Over time, his mother and sister managed to help him work past the anger to deal with the sadness, and he learned how to mourn. Slowly but surely, the family got over the loss together.
When Fabian was ten, a frightening incident occurred that he would never forget. He and Gideon were playing by the lake near their house, and it was getting close to dinnertime. Eager to put some food in his stomach after an afternoon of exercise, Fabian sat at the edge of the water, awaiting his mother’s call. He kept an eye on Gideon, who was still playing in the water. At some point, however, he must have taken his eyes off him, because the next thing he knew, his brother was gone. At first he thought Gideon might have been hiding, but after he looked around and didn’t see any fresh footprints by the water’s edge, he realized his brother must still be in the lake. He called Gideon’s name but received no response. He tried to look past the water’s still surface, but the low light made it difficult. Then, he saw it—an air bubble rising to the surface. But Gideon’s head still hadn’t broken the surface, and Fabian knew his brother couldn’t hold his breath that long. Terrified, he shouted toward the house for his mum and then dove into the lake, swimming fast and hard. He found his brother’s body drifting limply in the water, and when he grabbed him and tried to pull him upward, he realized why. Gideon’s hand was stuck between a couple of rocks, and Gideon must not have been strong enough to pull it out. Hastily, Fabian pulled with all his strength, yanking his brother’s hand free. Dragging him back to the shore, he realized Gideon wasn’t breathing, and he pounded frantically on his brother’s chest. After a moment, his mother appeared next to him and took Gideon’s body out of his hands. She whisked them to St. Mungo’s, where Gideon immediately received emergency treatment. As Gideon was being treated, Fabian waited with his worried mother, feeling guilty. He knew he was supposed to look after his brother, but he hadn’t done it well enough. He didn’t argue with the scolding he received, feeling like a bad brother. What if Gideon died? Luckily, he didn’t. When Gideon finally became conscious again, Fabian was just relieved and glad to have him back.
Shortly after that incident, the Prewetts were forced to move to a smaller house. Their finances hadn’t been in the best shape, and the medical bills were the final straw. The boys were upset that they had to move from their childhood home, but Ursula explained to them that it was necessary. After settling into their new house, the boys slept in the same room every night until Fabian started to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry at age eleven. After an initial period of homesickness and uncertainty about how to live apart from his family, Fabian managed to get along pretty well at Hogwarts. He was fairly well-liked by his peers, and his lively and good-humored personality helped him make friends easily. When his brother came along three years later, Fabian eagerly watched the Sorting, ready to welcome him into Gryffindor House. Unfortunately, the Sorting Hat declared that Gideon belonged in Hufflepuff, leaving Fabian was shocked and disappointed. He’d been looking forward to sharing his experience and House pride with his brother, but now he couldn’t. Nevertheless, he congratulated Gideon and welcomed him to his new school. Even though they weren’t in the same House, they could still spend time together, and Fabian could still play his part as big brother and role model.
Partway through that term, Fabian began to experience romance first-hand. Puberty had already hit, and so had his interest in girls. He shared his first kiss with Lily Evans, and the two started going together. They got along well but discovered that they just didn’t have enough chemistry to make it last. Over the next couple of years, Fabian had a number of romantic associations that started out smoothly but didn’t end up working out for one reason or another. Then, partway through his sixth year, he met Elisabeth Brownell, the girl with whom he’d eventually fall in love. He was dating her cousin Sooz at the time, but he and Elisabeth, whom he usually called Lizzy, became friends. After he and Sooz stopped seeing each other, he discovered that he had feelings for Lizzy and that she felt the same toward him. Their relationship blossomed, and soon she became the most special person in the world to him. It wasn’t perfect, but that didn’t matter, because it was love. It was real. Or so he thought. A couple months before his graduation, Lizzy broke up with him, claiming she’d only thought she was in love with him and that she didn’t want to be with him anymore. Heartbroken, he kept his distance from her until term ended. Even though it’s been a while since he’s seen her, he still hasn’t quite gotten over her yet, though he’s on his way.
Over the summer, Fabian joined the Order of the Phoenix, an organization that opposes Voldemort’s reign of tyranny, and he is currently honing his anti-Dark Arts skills through his Auror training.
