Discussion: History of Runes

While Professor Babbling prided herself in being one of the best Professors at Hogwarts - certainly better than that batty witch, Professor Trelawney, who, despite the respect among the professors, was one who got - and deserved - the least (unspoken, of course, as they would never openly do so) respect. But anyhow. In spite of the fact that she was one of the better teachers, she did realise that today's lesson would be particularly...difficult for the students to focus on. She'd heard about Professor Binns' lack of luck in the teaching department, and knew that most students did not appreciate monotonous lessons about history that was basically her reading through the text book and explaining the finer points. However, she had more dignity than to try to capture their attention in a more flamboyant manner, so she figures they'd simply have to deal with it. Although, unlike Binns, she would not tolerate someone napping in her class room. On that thought, she sent a quick glance around the classroom, as if checking to see for any likely suspects. Her eyes narrowed slightly on a yawning individual and her lips pursed, but she said nothing yet. No need to scare them just yet. "Would you all turn to page one hundred and twenty, please," she stated primly instead, making her way around the desk and settling in her chair, her legs crossed and her hands resting gently on the desk while she waited for the sound of turning pages before proceeding with the lesson.

Ancient Runes.

Oh, Merlin.

Imogen didn't care how nerdy it seemed. She was excited for this class every single time she had it on her timetable. She liked Defense Against the Dark Arts, sure. She sort-of had to be good at that class if she wanted to be an Auror. Ancient Runes certainly wasn't required for that career field, but honestly, Imogen didn't care. If liking Ancient Runes was "lame" or dorky, then so be it. She was a nerd and slightly proud of it. Really, it was a handy class. Not every professor in Hogwarts knew how to read runes, so Imogen had been able to get away with writing notes to her classmate in runology, and had felt rather clever and devious when the professor was stumped by the message. So long as they never took the note to Professor Babbling, Imogen considered herself to be safe from punishment. Besides, the extra practice was more help than just doing homework. She was in the top percentile of this class for a reason. She always came prepared for class, whether it was her homework completed or having read ahead. She'd spent an hour each of the past two nights re-reading the chapter they'd be discussing today on the history of runes, and off the top of her head could recall most of their origins. Like how "rune" came from the Norse word "Runa", which translated into "secret" or "mystery", and that rune-like markings first started to appear in the Bronze Age on cave walls. She knew that the first Runic alphabet to survive to modern day dated back to about 200AD and consisted of eighteen consonants and six vowels. She knew that it was called "Futhark" because of the first six letters of said alphabet. Vaguely she could remember the various ways in which it changed and adapted over time, but she supposed Professor Babbling wished to start from the beginning. So, obediently, Imogen opened her textbook and quickly flipped to page one hundred twenty before looked up at the front, unable to keep the eager look off her face.
