INTRODUCTION
Group #1: Gryffindor Sixth and Seventh Years Group #2: Ravenclaw Sixth and Seventh Years Discussion: How to properly pot a Fanged Geranium
Today was going to be a particularly difficult lesson, Professor Sprout knew. They were going to be dealing with Fanged Geranium and, if the students weren't too careful, the class could end with one or two of her students losing a finger and she really wanted to avoid that situation. Hopefully, she was right in thinking that these students - being sixth and seventh years - were old enough, and responsible enough, to deal with these dangerous plants. Not to mention she had specifically allowed only those whom she could tell were passionate about Herbology. It didn't matter if they got straight O's, but the knowledge that they were willing to work hard to get an O at NEWT level was why she allowed them to take her class. Which was why she had faith that this lesson would go well. Of course, there was always the odd student - usually a Gryffindor - who liked to show off and Merlin knows what that leads to. She sent a particularly narrowed-eye look at Mr. Sullivan. Hopefully he wouldn't be up to any antics today. "All right class, put on your protective gloves," she called, moving towards her own Fanged Geranium. "I want you to be very careful and, at all costs, avoid the Geranium's fangs, for they are powerful enough to pierce through the hide of your gloves. Everyone ready?" she questioned, looking around the greenhouse and waiting for confirmation. Let us hope this lesson ends well.

Honestly? May was still iffy about Herbology. There were some classes that were awesome, you know, like the time they did Tentaculus Mandibulus or ...what was that plant called. The carnivorous one - that had been an epic class, even if the plant had bit her pinky...and stuff. Anyway, those classes were fun, they were cool, active, just...you know, interesting. And then there were other classes, like the Mandrakes class? That had been boring. And they'd had earmuffs over their heads so she couldn't even socialize when she'd done it. But that had been second year, and things had gotten better since then, but still. Not her favorite class of the day. She walked into the greenhouse, and pressed her lips together, mentally crossing her fingers for a fun class... FANGED GERANIUMS! Awesome! May had to restrain herself from jumping up and down from excitement. Fangs! And gloves - that meant danger. Whoo! She couldn't wait to start.
She set down her bag under a table hastily and rushed to the front of the greenhouse, where Sprout was, to get some gloves. While she noticed other girls stop and consider the pink gloves, she grabbed the first pair on top and slipped them on. In her excitement to get back to the plants and start working some fangs, she stuffed her hand a little too hard into the right glove and turned around at the same time, and smacked somethingbody! on the face with the back of her hand. May gasped. Whoops. "Whoa, hey, sorry!" at whoever it had been, debating whether she should make sure they were okay or run back to the table to get started.

Awkward things like this happened to Alice all the time. Here she was, minding her own business, entering the classroom rather eagerly (she was quite good at Herbology and henceforth enjoyed the class very much), trying to simply walk up to the pile of gloves and grab a pair to begin work, when thwack! something hit her right across the face, sending her momentarily reeling as she struggled to overcome her initial shock and then seek the source. "Oh, no, no, it's fine," Alice struggled to say, shaking her head a little as she regained control of her nerves and was able to look the Gryffindor girl right in the eye, offering her a wobbly smile. "Not a problem, really." She grabbed a pair of gloves for herself and then returned to her station, noticing that the girl who accidentally smacked her in the face was in the station next to her. "You seem very... excited about this Fanged Geranium... Maylene, is it?" Alice initiated a casual conversation as she began slipping on her ratty gloves, sending occasional sideways glances at the girl beside her. She didn't really know Maylene very well, but she'd heard of her, had a few classes with her before. They'd just never been... properly introduced? "I'm Alice," she said again, her smile a bit more relaxed now. Well, she had to start somewhere with everyone, right?

May grimaced apologetically at the Ravenclaw girl that she'd hit. Oh, Alice. Personally, she'd never really talked to her much besides what was polite, but she was in her year, and she seemed nice enough. Or well, she'd always been pretty sweet but lately people had been saying that she was different - like May cared. Either way, they both returned to their stations, which happened to be next to each other, and May turned to talk to her. "So have-" but Alice spoke at the same time, and she laughed quietly. "Totally. I just love doing stuff that's cool, you know? We get to be active and like, it's much more interesting than, say, a class on pus of some sort. Don't you think it's exciting?
" she asked Alice, rambling on as she faced her Geranium, its fangs protruding out at her daringly. Oh, bring it, plant. A little surprised, May smiled back at her. " Yeah, I know. But I guess we haven't really officially met before, you know? I mean I think we once partnered up in Transfiguration in like, second year or something, but geez, who remembers that so anyway, yeah, I'm May, and I love danger. That sounded kind of weird, didn't it? I guess I just love to take on stuff," she shrugged, observing Alice. Hadn't she just started some sort of abstinence club or something? She recalled somebody having mentioned it to her at some point or another. Waste of time, in her opinion, but that wasn't very nice to say, so she kept her mouth shut. Besides, Alice seemed to be a very nice sort of girl. Somebody she could totally see herself having a good time with.[/blockquote][/blockquote]

It was strange: Gryffindors normally sort of intimidated Alice, since they were always so forthright and open about their ideas whereas she was so closed and often quite silent about hers, fearing judgment of the other party. But with Maylene, Alice felt herself relaxing a little, just like she had with her other Gryffindor friends in previous years. She'd always wanted to sport that red uniform, and perhaps, surrounding herself toward them and naturally gravitating toward them despite her intimidation was her way of expressing that unfulfilled desire. She looked at May with her bright blue eyes and smiled again as they started talking at once, then shutting her mouth so as to listen to the other girl with undivided attention. "Well, that's great!" Alice nodded to her, reassuringly. "We really do need more people like you, who are so passionate about school. And... non-pus related classes," she added with a little giggle, turning back to look at her Fanged Geranium and petting it, cooing gently to it and ushering it into a sort of subdued stupor which she had learned to do from supplementary reading. "I agree; it's always a good day when pus is not in the conversation. But oh, we were in Transfiguration with each other second year? Oh! Oh, that's right! I knew you were familiar. Gosh! It's been such a long time since we've actually sustained a conversation, haha! Nice to talk to you again," she demurred with a genuine smile. "It's good that you like danger, though! Not weird at all. I wish I liked danger. Although... I suppose, you could say that I do, since I signed up for that Tabula Rasa... thing. Hah. Yeah. Maybe it was crazy of me. Since..." she gave herself the once-over, "I'm a shrimp."

Oh, this girl was great. She'd been so right. "Oh, don't get me wrong. I'm not a smarty-pants at all, quite the opposite, actually," she laughed, raising her eyebrows as she looked at the plant in front of her excitedly. "I just kind of like this sort of stuff, like when we get to blow up stuff in Charms or fight creatures in DADA. It's kind of cool.
" Like when they'd done the Boggarts in third year. It had definitely had to have been her favorite DADA class in the history of DADA. Even when she'd had to face it. She shuddered inwardly. But still; so cool. " Seriously, girl. We've got to catch up more sometime. You're Quidditch commentator this year, aren't you? I'm on the team, of course - I think you'll do great. Fun, though. How come you tried out? You totally don't strike me as the kind of girl that likes Quidditch; do you? Sometimes appearances are deceiving. But hey! For real?" May asked excitedly, rounding on Alice, her plant momentarily forgotten. " I was planning on signing up, too! It's gonna rock. I can't wait and dude, it'd be epic if I'm chosen. How do you think they're going to that, huh? Like, will Dumbledore choose or something, or will it be random?"[/blockquote][/blockquote]
