Discussion: Reading Tea Leaves
Seated cross-legged on her chair, Sybill Trelawney had her eyes closed as students climbed up and entered her classroom, taking their seats around her. It was a cozy classroom, she'd always thought. Much nicer than those wide, open rooms the other professors seemed to enjoy teaching in. No, no, too drafty. Too impersonal. This was much nicer, of course it was. Eyes snapping open quickly behind her glasses, she allowed a smile to creep across her lips as she raised her arms in a welcoming gesture. "Hello, students," she began, nodding pleasantly. She liked this class, these fourth and fifth years. They had stayed on this year, obviously interested in her subject - and rightly so. And when they were interested, they came to her, of course, as she was a reputable teacher of such subjects, being the granddaughter of a quite famous Seer. She liked to remind her class of this when anyone dared to seem unimpressed or skeptical - skeptical, the nerve! - of her true talent. There was always someone in every year it seemed, someone who simply didn't have a strong Inner Eye and grew frustrated with their own inability. They tended to project this frustration on her but- Oh, nevermind that. "I've heated a kettle of tea on the back table there," she informed them, stretching her arm out wide as she pointed. "You may all help yourselves to a cup and then we'll take a look at what the leaves left behind have to say." Ah yes, tea leaf reading. She liked to practice it with the younger students, as it was something that few were naturally skilled with. But then again, the same could be said for Divination as a whole. If someone didn't have a strong Inner Eye, well, there simply wasn't much that could be done for them.
