Canon or Original? Canon
Distinguishing Physical Features: The secret is in the eyes. With Augustus, one can tell if he is truly paying attention and is sincere by the expression his eyes convey. If they are open and vivid he is honest in his doings but when they are slightly slanted, almost cunning, a person has trouble on their hands. Despite many verbal (and some non-verbal) thrashings, Augustus still has tattoos running down one arm. Although getting attention is not the name of his game, he likes the choice of expression that tattoos give to him. He is a very fair skinned, light haired guy who looks like he may not have seen the sun for months and yet, he was blessed with a glow about him that would seem unnatural were he to get a tan. While it may not be something he likes to share, Augustus does have two toes on his right foot which are webbed together. Try not to pay any attention to them. His neck is thick, almost too thick, and usually he has arms the size to match. Augustus looks very much like his mother from the top of his head to the tips of his toes, and there could never be any doubt in a person’s mind just who Augustus belonged to.
Wand Type: Redwood, 10 inch, slightly bendy. Patronus: White Bengal Tiger Boggart: The first furry creature he can think of Personality: “Who? August Rookwood? Tha’ sneaky son of a- well. He’s as slippery as a snake, tha’ un. Warms up nice and cozy to yer and an’ then takes ye fur all ye got. Says ter me: “I have a prop…a prop…a propersition fur ye.” Sos I listen real close cause’ I like ‘em things. An’ yer know what? Talks ‘bout hows he knows I gots to make surm monies and hows he also knows I’m good orn me word. I own a shop tha’ boy goes ter and he has sumthin’ he knows I like. Well, I sure did like it an’ so he sells it ter me all cheap like and takes surm me monies and I take the trinket. Well I tell yer dat trinket don’ e’en werk! Next time he come aroun’ I tell ‘im so an’ he tell me I don’ have enourf sense ter rub two coins togetha an’ how come it so hard fer me ter figer it out? He don’ e’en need the monies! He all rich like an’ he only done do it ter make it harder fer me, tha’ all. Sos I puts the trinket in me shop and serm gurl buy it and next thing I know dem gurl is curs’d. Had ter almost close me shop afer’ tha’.” ********** “August likes to be around other people. He doesn’t care what house you’re in like some people do, he still talks to you. He prefers some to others I suppose…but, that’s just normal house rivalry and we all do that here! Most of his friends are purebloods…but he has other friends too, I mean just look at me! I’m not pureblood and we have lovely conversations. August is just used to being around purebloods because he was raised with all of them. Would he ever date someone who wasn’t pureblood? Oh well I, um see, uh…I don’t know. I don’t think his family would be very happy, and no, I suppose that I, personally, haven’t seen him holding hands with a muggle born. But still, he talks to them! If they were muggle born it might be a problem but I don’t know that he would ignore his heart if he fell for a girl who maybe wasn’t Quite so pure as his family in bloodlines. He doesn’t talk a lot like some people – he prefers to listen to them. He likes to be in a group of people better than to be in one-on-one situations. As far as I can see he’s more comfortable as part of the crowd than a stand-out and that’s just fine to me. It takes all kinds of people, right? He does have this way with disappearing right when you need him most, though. Oops, I guess I should get to the point. August is nice to lots of people and can pal around with anybody, but he does spend the most time with other purebloods. Sometimes, I’ll admit, August is kind of well, um…mean? It must be the perfectionist in him, or something…” ********** “Learn quickly! Please learn young Master Rookwood does not want to be teased. Young master Rookwood gets very, very angry. Young master Rookwood was made fun of by poor cousin, I think his name is Cornelius, when he was ten, and young master Rookwood was real mad. Young master Rookwood hung Cornelius from the ballroom chandelier and when Mistress Rookwood say, “Bring him down!”, young Master Rookwood, with his wand, dropped him and Cornelius fell allllll the way down on his head. Batbee worried about Cornelius but Batbee not say anything, because Batbee know Cornelius deserve it. Cornelius hide when he see young master Rookwood now, even though he always say hi and smile at Cornelius. Young master Rookwood embarrassed when he doesn’t do things right and he not want other people to say something. Young master Rookwood have bad temper but usually not at Batbee ‘cept if Batbee is very very bad, like if Batbee tell on him or forget to do something important. Young Master Rookwood no like criticism. He is very hot and cold. He got from slow to faaaast! In three seconds. Be nice to young Master Rookwood and he is nice back.” ********* “Sure, I’ll admit that sometimes it pisses me off that Augustus Rookwood can best me in arithmancy. But are you kidding, have you seen him? He likes to crunch numbers – FOR FUN. I’m not an idiot, I’m a Ravenclaw for Merlin’s sake but even I don’t calculate the number of stones in the structural composition of Hogwarts or put everything in its proper place because it gets my adrenaline going. I do things that make me sound smart because I have to. Augustus organizes because I think it turns the weirdo on. You know, sometimes I think he’s attracted to numbers; sexually. Don’t look at me like that! Alright I MAY be exaggerating but I bet if a girl were snogging him and he got preoccupied by someone’s arithmancy equation on the table? I bet he’d shove her off his lap and solve it right then and there. He’s kind of a freak like that but some people like him anyway. He’s not a genius, he just has special talents. I know he’s not, because he tried to cheat off my charms paper and I caught him in the act. When his score came back whoo! A “Troll” was too nice cause’ I’m thinking even a troll could have written a better essay than he did. He’s good in Ancient Ruins too, from what I’ve heard, but I wouldn’t really know because I have better things to do than study a useless subject like that. Really, what’s he going to do with a background in Ancient Ruins? Work in the Department of Mysteries?” ********* “Not that it is of the utmost importance but I suppose, no, Augustus may not possess all the qualities that befit a distinguished gentleman but he is, mind you, still technically a boy. To ask his mother whether or not he has ever cried in a fit of rage when he was not able to obtain his desire is not only uncouth, but puts me in quite the precarious condition. What person at some interval in their lifetime has not shed an infrequent tear or two? It says nothing at all about his quality of sportsmanship or maturity, nothing at all either way. He has been raised with extreme attentiveness by both of his parents and when the most is always expected of an individual it is rather natural for that said person to become…overwhelmed. As for his love life, he is an extremely well behaved and mannered pureblood. While, like many boys his age, his eyes stray from time to time from the task appointed at hand to an inviting female, it should not be at all surprising for you to learn that my Augustus has other hobbies and passions. I should not like to discuss any further such a delicate matter of the most personal nature, but I will leave you with this: While other pureblood sons may be off gallivanting with their latest conquest, my Augustus, charming as he is, continues to put a greater emphasis on the goal at hand. I would say that speaks volumes for his maturity, which for some ridiculous reason is being questioned.” *********** “Of course they’re going to say all that. It’s what they want you to think. Me? I don’t want you to think anything about me at all except with confusion. Okay, I’ll spill a little. Do I “pick” on people? Only if they need some picking on. You’ve seen the type around school, they’re just begging for it. Some of these little sissies need toughening up. I got pushed around a little bit and now look at me – a polished rock. Do I cry? Who the hell do you think I am? Of course I don’t cry I’m not a girl, hah. And don’t just think that I’m putting bravado on, either. I’m as tough as I say I am, okay? That one time I was not crying I just had something in my eye, and don’t bring it up again. There, where were we? Right, we were talking about who I really am before you got sidetracked. It’s okay, it happens. I’m not mad because I’m a nice kind of bloke and I understand people make mistakes. Don’t they? Yeah, you just made a little mistake. I do make friends with people from other houses, why not? New people are kind of interesting to me and they know a lot of other people and you just never know when you’ll need them around. Oh, that one girl you talked to? She’s kind of nauseating but I guess it’s not her fault – she’s a Hufflepuff, she doesn’t know any better. Of course I’m not going to tell my mum about every girl I ever want to date, she’s my mum, for merlin’s sake. She is right in that respect – girls aren’t my life. I like them, but my world doesn’t revolve around them. That Ravenclaw only said I get off on numbers because I shoved his head in the toilet once. Oh don’t worry about him – we’re good now. He knows I only did it to help him out. Everyone around school knows that. They all know I’m generally a pretty nice guy who just happens to be a pureblood. What else is there to know?” *********** Augustus would very much like to be mentally stronger than he is. He easily becomes stressed in high pressure situations and breaks down. He can follow orders of those who are stronger than he is but likes to be in control over the weaker in return. While he possesses both good and bad qualities Augustus is not a typical pureblood. He really will make friends with those beyond the norm, just don’t expect him to become a muggle rights activist. Surprisingly, in the most unexpected ways, he is a good friend to have. Augustus is anything if not resourceful and he makes use of what he has which is, fortunately, a lot. He has no problem with being generous or bestowing gifts on those he likes as well as those he bribes. He can get a friend out of a fix even if it does take some work on his part. Sometimes, August is unintentionally intense. Unable to relate to people on the deepest level, he always tries to “figure” people out who are unlike him as if they were a tough equation to be riddled. The difference between him and so many others is that Augustus sincerely wants to relate to people when they talk about the death of a family member, sentimental feelings and the like, but it is simply the fact that he cannot which haunts him. As a result, he gives some unsuspecting people the uncomfortable feeling that he is staring deeply into their soul – to be fair, if he could, he would. August is more of a serious boy in many matters but plays with the rest of them. He’s a hypocrite when it comes to making fun of someone. While teasing another causes him no guilt or anger, having it done to himself spurs both immensely. Pick or be picked on, if you will, is his motto. Fearful by nature, he puts on an act to try and compensate. And what of his supposed kindness? It’s real. Very much still a boy, August acts certain ways and has as a result become a certain way because he always thought it was expected of him. He is not heartless, evil, or monstrous. It’s difficult to be any of those things when you’re only sixteen years old. Augustus is friendly enough, a bit curious, and lost when it comes to discovering what to do with himself. Had he been born under different circumstances and into a different family, it’s very possible that Augustus Rookwood may have become one of the great philosophers of the wizarding world. Instead, his upbringing stunted him early in youth, and left Augustus with a somewhat puzzling personality.

History: “The Rookwoods began as any pureblood family would – it started with a man and a woman, destined at birth to unite and continue a legacy of…blah blah blah. You understand what I mean. Abelena Ansel, a red cheeked and spoiled girl of seventeen, became the wife of Benito Grace, a respectable and vivacious man of sixty-nine after years of betrothal (seventeen to be exact). It is not possible for me to make these things up. They had two glorious years together – Abelena dabbing Benito’s chin, Benito babysitting Abelena. As fate would have it, Benito died and Abelena became a widow at a mere nineteen years of age. A curious mixture of indigestion and arsenic took Benito too soon, it was said, and in her grief and newly inherited fortune, Abelena did the only thing she could do – she turned to a man for comfort. Abelena married the volatile Augustus Rookwood the following summer, attended by almost all the respected persons of the pureblood family. Did I say family? Well, I suppose I did. No matter, it is no secret that most of the English purebloods are related in some manner. When you’ve been serving the Rookwood house as long as I have you tend to forget which lines one shouldn’t cross during story telling. As I was saying, it was attended by almost all the respectable purebloods in England. A wisp of a year passed before Abelena gave birth to a pretty (pretty ugly) little baby girl – Margaret. Following on her tail the next year was Augustus, the “lucky” little lad inheriting his father’s name. I am not about to make a cute inference to little Augustus as the man of the house. There was no doubt as to who the man of the house was. Augustus, patriarch, has always been one for a spirit or two and these spirits have a bit of a peculiar affect on him. When one sees the elder Mr. Rookwood partake of wine, one might choose wisely and head for the door. The younger Augustus learned quickly how to move fast on his feet and to dodge, here and there. Abelena on the other hand, has always sat high on a pedestal. Fortunately for the young Augustus, being the male heir, and unfortunately for the square-faced Margaret, Augustus has always been the favorite child of the Rookwoods. When he was born it was strongly recommended that his….fish toes be taken care of, but the idea that young Augustus would be changed from what he was clearly born to be (a good swimmer?) kept the Rookwoods from magically separating them. As for Margaret, I am afraid that even with magic, not everything is in the realm of possibility.
Augustus showed his vigor for numbers at a young age, a much younger age than his first magical abilities. He was four years of age when he learned basic multiplication and division, five when he developed the talent to apply magical properties to it, and by the time he was six, Augustus had corrected his father on a number of occasions when calculating and was very rarely wrong on the matter. Most unfortunate in appearance as Margaret is, Augustus has never failed to compliment his elder, more rotund sister on her amber eyes, attentiveness to house management or her never wavering interest in her, admittedly, rare collection of troll nails. Augustus’s younger brother has never posed the male threat that so many brothers create in a pureblood family due to his sickly nature. The Rookwoods have never been famed for their ability in producing strong offspring, with the older and younger Augustus’ being the exceptions. Augustus is the pride of the family if I may say so, by default, as he is the only child who can stand firmly on two feet and not frighten anyone away when glanced upon. Though more common now than it was a generation ago, Augustus is still a little different as a pureblood as he has not yet secured his own betrothal, while his eligibility for marriage is looming ever closer. The decision was made to not look for Augustus’s own “happiness” until Margaret find a suitable match, the latter of which has an expiration date in the future. Thought it is not my place to say, it seems to me that young Augustus is being held hostage by any interested and marriable family as a two-for-one package deal.”
*********** After his letter arrived and Augustus was sorted into the Slytherin house, he became more comfortable. Although he has never been completely sure of his place, he now had proof that he was one of “them”. August has and probably always will enjoy the sensation of comfort. While he tried out for the Quidditch team twice he was unable to secure a position. He was never really good at sports and only wanted to be on the team for something to do, but the humiliation of losing at something has dissuaded him from trying again. Strange behavior or not, August has likely walked every inch of Hogwarts and its grounds (and sometimes beyond) because of his basic liking for movement. He learned most of the secret Hogwarts passages by his fourth year and makes use of them when need be. He doesn’t like to be left out, and so Augustus has always attended school events and parties when he can help it. His relationship with his parents has always been a precarious one. Over the years Augustus has developed a fear of his violent father but looks up to him nonetheless. Like many teenagers he is amused by his mother but rarely listens to what she tells him to do. As a true planner, Augustus has already laid out the beginnings of a plan to work for the Ministry. It is a job with many benefits and he cannot imagine himself performing a mediocre job in a mediocre setting in another mediocre life. Now in his sixth year he continues to work hard (but not too hard) in school, particularly in the subjects which most interest him. Found in the middle of a tussle more than a few times, he most certainly isn’t under the radar of the school authorities, but as some say, “there’s bigger fish to fry”. As for the explanation on his irrational fear of…well, everything that bites?: Scar on left thigh – rabid dog in Knockturn Alley; scar on hand – deranged pet owl of Margaret’s; scar over right eyebrow – well, that requires a bit of an explanation. After being chased around the backyard by his aunt’s illegally owned Hippogriff, Augustus’s forehead caught the end of a sharp branch, causing damage that would require stitches in the muggle world. At least bunnies are safe…for now.
