{ A B O U T . T H E . C H A R A C T E R } Name: Jareth Stardust Age: 15 Gender: male Year: 5th Face Claim: Logan Lerman
Canon or Original? Original
Facial Properties: Jareth's mom always describes him as having a "starry eyed dreamer" look about him. His most prominent features are his set of big blue eyes. They're a shade of electric blue with specks of black and silver in them, looking as though they're constantly reflecting a deep blue sky riddled with stars, even when he's indoors. Jareth's facial expression is usually in a constant state of looking surprised. His eyebrows -- which, okay, are a bit fuller than the average teen's -- stay perched pretty high up on his forehead. You know when you walk into a room that has all the lights off? And you try to open your eyes as wide as you can to take in any speck of light to help you see? Yah, he pretty much looks like that 24/7. Jareth's lips are pretty full and if they aren't slightly parted and making a small "O", then his lower lip is being bit down on as he tries to refrain from laughing at something that's not classified as a "socially acceptable response". Jareth's hair is dark brown and it always looks like he just got out of bed. Not because he takes the time to tediously style it to look so, but because he literally just rolled out of bed. His nose is round -- Jareth has mused a few times, especially around Halloween, that it looks like a small pumpkin or a gourd -- and is more often than not smudge with a little bit of ink. And lastly, he's got fantastically large ears.
Physique: Jareth is no slab of hunky man meat. He's of average height for his age (about 5'10") and has little to no muscle mass. He isn't into sports, he doesn't exercise and the most working out he does is wading through the shallows of the lake or trudging along the edge of the forbidden forest looking for specimens to collect and examine. Though he does carry around an extremely large amount of books back and forth between his dorm and the library, does that count as weight lifting? He is oddly light on his feet and dexterous. Jareth is a skilled yo-yo-er, has taught himself how to twirl his wand rather expertly around his fingers and can gracefully guide his way through a crowded corridor while his nose is stuck in a book.
Wand Type: Willow, 10 3/4 inches, unicorn tail core and surprisingly swishy. Wand Expertise: Divination Patronus: Barn owl Boggart: Puppets
Personality: Jareth is a certifiable space cadet in all possible meanings of the word. He spends a majority of his time daydreaming or staring off into space, but unlike most people who have issues with focusing, Jareth can be paying attention to multiple things at once. So he can be looking out the window of the charms classroom, watching the flight pattern of a robin, while listening to what the professor is saying and writing a note back and forth with a friend. This also means that he always has more than one train of thought at any given time, which results in a lot of disjointed comments in the middle of a conversation and random laughter. He'll hum or have polite conversation with himself while walking down a corridor. If he finds something funny -- he's been noticing that when he does laugh, a lot of the time no one else joins in with him for some reason -- it's a small, little high pitched, singular note. Jareth's been crazy more than once in his lifetime, but these comments are only made by people who don't take the time to understand and get to know him. Luckily, Jareth is virtually incapable of feeling nervous or embarrassed. If people make fun of him, he doesn't really think much of it because he is quite comfortable with who he is. That and he's sort of oblivious to sarcasm and other social cues.
Jareth is a very smart boy, but not in a conventional way. His professors are constantly telling his parents that he would be in the running for the student with the highest marks at Hogwarts if he just applied himself. He has this problem where he is an exceptionally intelligent student, but rarely ever actually applies to do his school work. When a professor gives them an assignment and it doesn't catch Jareth's interest, he ends up doing something else that he DOES find interesting. For example, in Astronomy class, Professor Sinistra gave the students a week to complete a star chart with all of the main constellations filled into it. When it came time to turn in the project, he didn't turn in a boring star chart that Jareth could have filled out in his sleep. Instead, he presented her with a chart. Along with it was a detailed essay on how plotting the recurrence of Venus' westward elongation from the Sun, over five consecutive synodic periods, will create the points of a pentagram. Clearly this was a far more interesting assignment and Professor Sinistra didn't know whether to deduct house points for not having done the homework, or to give him house points for charting a planetary path that would take 584 days to observe first hand. So, Jareth is very smart and aces every test because he knows all of the subject matter, but when it comes to homework and assignments, he tends to deviate from the plan. He's more concerned with his own interests and rather enjoys inventing new potions or magical items with random purposes, such as a potion he created that when store in a crystal phial, if you put a drop of blood into it, it'll glow bright blue and provide as much light as a lamp for up to 10 hours. It didn't really have much practical purposes, but God damn was it cool. He's very curious and always in pursuit of something new from day to day. If he ever came upon the Mirror of Erised, Jareth would probably go mad staring longingly into it for years.
Another problem that Jareth has is that at any given time, he is usually the smartest guy in the and he knows he's the smartest guy in the room. He knows that he has an intellectual edge and will sometimes abuse it. Jareth has a tendency to tell lies either because he knows he can get away with it, or because he is testing the intelligence of the person he is talking to and wants to know if they can tell or will call him out on it. That's not to say that he lies in order to do any harm to anyone, but he just doesn't use his "powers" for good all of the time. He'll tell elaborate stories, come up with his own theories and make up his own words. On the other hand, Jareth is also more likely to fall for other peoples' bullshit. He doesn't pick up very well on sarcasm and while he can of course tell if someone is lying about something that has an answer he knows (like he would never fall for someone telling him the wrong answer to his potions homework), but if someone told him there was a species of invisible doxies that caused people to forget if they left the stove on, he could probably believe them. So, if something can be proven or disproved, Jareth knows the truth about it, but if it's a more existential idea, he'll probably believe it. He is more likely to believe weird things because he is skilled at defending beliefs he arrived at for non-smart reasons. As such, Jareth whole-heartedly believes in aliens (specifically, he think that the dominating species from Mars is that of a super-intelligent spiders who are waiting for us Earthlings to destroy our ecosystem before they make their move), all forms of Divination and that all of life's questions can be solved by proper star charting. Jareth enjoys having conversations with ghosts, thinks goblins and merpeople are fascinating and, if given the choice, he would join the herd of centaurs in the forbidden forest as their equal in a heartbeat.
Jareth is by no means a bad guy, however. He's just a little odd and does things that are classically considered as socially appropriate. Jareth doesn't pick and choose his friends -- with such a small pool of people who actually put up with him, he doesn't really have the luxury to discriminate -- if you like him, chances are he likes you. Even though he is a fifteen year old boy, the opposite sex isn't really a big concern of his, although it may come off as he does. Jareth has no sense of personal space and is the type of person who will invade a person's bubble without realizing it's weird. He'll stand really close to people when they're talking and stare at someone for a little too long across a room. Jareth cares about his friends fiercely and is loyal to a fault. He'll use his increased level of IQ to try to fix his friends' problems, though about half the time it's just making matters worse and Jareth doesn't realize that he isn't doing a good deed. An example of this would be when someone had picked on one of his best friends, Jareth figured out to bypass their charmed journal and bewitched howlers to follow the student around Hogwarts, reciting the most embarrassing pages. He just couldn't understand it when people thought he had "gone too far".
But, generally speaking, Jareth opperates with the best of intentions. He may not understand sarcasm or every joke thrown his way, but he does laugh and have a good time. He enjoys being outdoors, especially when he is wading through the shallows of the lake digging up roots for a new potion idea or trudging through the edge of the forbidden forest, ringing a triangle and trying to catch fairies. Jareth likes to be around a lot of people, but he by no means enjoys being the center of attention. He'd rather sit back, laugh along with everyone else and make random, odd comments that makes everyone pause and stare at him while he holds his middle and laughs away by himself. Being raised in a muggle home, Jareth is amazed by magic on an almost daily basis and that's a huge reason as to why he is so thoroughly interested in anything having to do with the wizarding world.

History: Jareth's parents, Sarah Jones and Robbie Stardust, met in very simple terms. They were muggles who came from simple middle-class families and both went to the same simple boarding school. Sarah was a stubborn, driven girl who was very dedicated to her studies while Robbie was aloof, talked too much and was in a band. Obviously, the two didn't run in the same social circles, but after two months of Robbie being sentenced to getting tutored by Sarah and exactly 187 attempts on Robbie's part to ask her out, they developed a relationship. It was a tumultuous one, however, since the two of them had very opposing personalities which resulted in a lot of arguments, broken guitars (on Sarah's behalf) and slammed doors. But eventually Sarah eased up her tight-laced habits and Robbie finally managed to grow up a bit. They got married when they were both 24 and two years later, Jareth was born.
He was born with his mother's blue eyes and curiosity, and his father's unruly hair and dazed expression. Being raised by Sarah and Robbie was like being raised by the moon and the sun; two polar opposites that tugged him back and forth and eventually spun him into a rather fantastic combination of the two of them. Sarah encouraged learning, curiosity and hard work but would sigh heavily when Jareth would do into detail about aliens and how he was convinced he was a warlock. Conversely, Robbie was always trying to get Jareth to learn how to play instruments and take time to be creative but just couldn't understand how a young boy would enjoy reading so much or how he could spend hours examining weird bugs he found in the backyard under a magnifying glass.
The odd things that neither Sarah nor Robbie could explain started happening when Jareth turned 8 years old. There were several afternoons where they had found Jareth on the roof, perched on the edge and peeking his head down into the garden. Neither of them knew how he got up there and whenever they tried to ask Jareth, he told them, in earnest, that he had floated up there. Then Jareth started talking about how the animals that dug up holes in the front yard weren't moles, but fluffy little round creatures that seemed to have an affinity for Sarah's jewelry. Sarah and Robbie assumed that Jareth was going through a stage of telling fibs of the particularly outlandish variety, but when light bulbs started spontaneously exploding in Jareth presence, the two started to grow concerned.
One afternoon when Jareth was 11 years old, man with a long silver beard, half moon spectacles and an envelope showed up on the Stardust's front porch. Jareth opened up the front door as his parents walked up behind him, looked over Dumbledore and then let out a heavy sigh that sang with relief. "Finally!" Jareth exclaimed as he began to pull Dumbledore in by his sleeve. "Can you please explain to my parents now about how I have the magic?" He considered Dumbledore for a moment more before adding, "I quite enjoy your beard." Now, you already know how this part goes. Dumbledore went through the lengthy explanation of how Sarah and Robbie's son was, in fact, a wizard and had been accepted to go to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry where he would learn to harness and control his magic. While his parents sat on the couch, Sarah letting out a dubious scoff and Robbie looking pale as a ghost, Jareth sat in the middle of the floor, legs folded, hands clasped in his hands and nodding along politely while Dumbledore spoke. Three hours, 4 pots of tea and a few show of magic later, the Stardust's had come to some sort of conclusion that this old man was apparently telling the truth. Jareth was ecstatic and it took another 30 minutes for Dumbledore to escape Jareth as he went on a long, concerned inquiry about what the wizarding community was doing about the impending invasion by the spider from Mars.
