{ A B O U T . T H E . C H A R A C T E R } Name: Josephine DeLeon (day-lee-own) Nickname(s): Joe, Jose Age: Seventeen Gender: Female Year: Sixth Face Claim: Hilary Duff
Canon or Original? Original
Facial Properties:
- - so i walk a little slower and try to catch your eye - - Josephine is anal about her hair. So much so that she’s gone through many different phases of hair colors. Though she was born blonde, she’s dyed her hair a lighter brown, brown completely and all the way to black. She experiment’s frequently and it no longer comes to her classmate’s surprise if one day she walks in blonde and then the following day a brunette. Over her time she’s learned useful spells to make her morning’s simpler when she decides she wants a different color. On a similar note, she accentuates her face with a mixture of make up to bring out her eyes and humbly redden her cheeks. Many people – her mother included – argue that she doesn’t need to do so, her hazel eyes already well enough defined on their own and her lips a fine shade of pale strawberry. It’s really the only aspect of Josephine’s life that can be described as girly though, so she makes sure to do an extra good job with it. Her relatively smooth cheek bones and fair complexion are two things she doesn’t have to worry about, which is the base of her beauty. Hygienically speaking Josephine’s an avid teeth brusher and gum flosser. It’s a habit ingrained from her parents and one that’s likely to stick until her dying days.
Physique:
- - when i know you think i’m sweet - - Coming in at a firm 5’2” and 120 pounds, Josephine isn’t one to look all that intimidating or particularly strong. That’s a pretty fair assumption, excuse with the exception of her being rather agile and graceful with her movements. What is there really to say? She knows how to use what her mother gave her. Thankfully blessed with her mom’s acute feature and figure, Josephine escaped the awkwardness of her father’s lanky frame. Her sister wasn’t so lucky, slightly taller than Josephine and with more slender face. Josephine was more concerned about what she dressed her average body type in, not that she had an average body type. From many hunts around her town she became accustom to wearing expensive clothing. She has a love for all sorts of jewelry and make up as well. That doesn’t stop her from knowing how to dress down and relax though, guilty of lounging around the house in a pair of sweat pants when she’s feeling lazy. Josephine will do whatever it takes to stay out of Hogwarts robes, as she doesn’t seem them to work much flattery on anyone’s shape. You might as well show up for class wearing a black plastic garbage bag.
- - sometimes i make no sense - - Wand Type: 11” dogwood and vella hair Wand Expertise: Useful for persuasive and seductive charms, transfigurations Patronus: Josephine’s patronus takes the peculiar but not surprising form of a lioness. Truly embracing her personality into that of an animal, the silver ghost can appear beautiful and majestic and such fiercer traits, like strong will and determination, can be overlooked. Boggart: One thing she can commonly relate to with others is her fear of spiders. On more than one occasion Josephine has been accused of having arachnophobia. Spiders, in her humble, serve no purpose in the world and their creepy, crawly legs make her skin cold.
Personality:
- - it doesn’t matter what they say in the jealous games that people play - - She’s always been a rather loud child, but that doesn’t mean she’s incapable of being quiet. Josephine just prefers to fill up the empty space with conversation. Not to the point of being annoying, at leas she doesn’t think so, yet she knows of a few people who would say quite the opposite. Josephine isn’t here for anyone else’s pleasure, so if you’re not up for her company – then alright then, go find somebody else to hang out with. She’s always been brutally honest, even if another’s feelings are at risk. She’d rather have someone tell her where there’s an issue then keep it to themselves. That whole “beat around the bush” game? She’s never been a fan of it. If you’re not bold enough to just come right out and say it, then it’s your own stupid fault for letting something so simple escalate into a giant problem. Her sharp tongue can be a problem sometimes, if not because of her constantly using it than just because of the words rolling off it. While she may not be a physical competition, her wit – inherited no doubt from her father – is something to be reckoned with. That might simply be a side effect of her environment growing up, too, as she was always out and about dealing with crafty merchants and salespeople. Josephine might even have it in her to become a great entrepreneur some day – that is of course, if she could handle to focus that long.
- - but i’m not falling for that game - - Josephine has never really been much into the school scene. Not academically, at least. She’s always been much more sociable than that. While she by no means fails all her classes – it would disappoint her family too much – she’s left the straight O’s to her older sister, Sophia. That was more her expertise; Josephine on the other hand liked to go to parties and make friends with many people. That could be made difficult, once again because of her bright personality, but it seemed to draw as many to her as away. She has few select girl friends that she keeps close and wouldn’t betray for the world. Boys, however…they seem to have a rapidly changing history in her world. Josephine wouldn’t label herself a slut, but she’s definitely a flirt. Unfortunately those two words are often misinterpreted and interchangeable in Hogwarts. She just likes boys – last time she checked, that wasn’t a very big problem unless the person liking a boy was another boy. (The whole “gay” thing isn’t something she usually chooses to interact with – she’s not applauded by it, but she doesn’t understand it which makes is undesirable to her.) Josephine has always had something of an advantage over other girl’s too, as on occasion she can be caught muttering something briefly in French. She’s fluent in both English and French, but for whatever reason there’s something about a trace of a France accent amongst a group of English speaking boys that really lights a little fire under them. Sometimes one can get too hot, which is where Josephine draws the line. For however much a flirt she might be, she’s still a virgin. That can have it’s disadvantages, as though she’s some sort of conquest now instead of someone really liking her, not what she can offer them.
- - is that the answer, is that was Christmas really means? - - One thing that Josephine always enjoys, every single year: Christmas. If she could bottle up the feeling of Christmas to somehow preserve it all year long, she would. In a way her obsession with the holidays reflects well in her personality. She just likes to help people and generally considered pretty generous. Whether it’s because she tends to expect things for her service or just to get that warm feeling of accomplishment, the result still ends the same with a willing hand. Another attachment she has to Christmas is that her dad always loved it. He was the spirit of the family and since with his passing, Josephine has tried hard to keep his memory alive by repeating the same traditions he would every year. Keeping the December month flowing like it always did has helped the DeLeon family to have a special, happy time to remember their los, loved one. Josephine has a close relationship with her dad; he was actually the first one to ever begin calling her Joe. A girl named Joe? It seemed to stick with her, though she only allows her closest friends to address her like that. To everyone else it’s Josephine and she has no trouble reminding you of it. So along with this nature of caring and wanting to keep things lively is a likeable reason for why she has such a great love for animals. Having recently bought a Ragdoll kitten she named Jinx, it’s given her something to channel her love to. When boys are being stupid and her friends just aren’t cutting it, she’ll at least always have the little fur ball to keep her company.
- - laugh it off and let it go - - Despite Josephine’s outwardly girly appearance, she knows how to hold her own. Another thing that can be viewed as both alarming but attractive is her need to seek out adventure. It’s something that has molded her into who she is, being fairly daring and fearless. That isn’t to say she doesn’t have herself a good fright every once in a while, but rather she knows how to take life but the throat and strangle it. Because of her father’s earlier death there is apart of her that’s learned you can’t take yourself too seriously. Every so often, you have to take a step back and laugh at yourself. Sometimes you have to ask yourself if, ten years down the road, if something is really worth being angry about. Life is only so long, so you might as well embrace it while you can. That was the piece of advice that got her through her fourth year – the year after her father had died. While she returned to school more sober than normal Josephine knew she couldn’t keep going on like a depressed little child forever. It just wasn’t in her to keep on that way and she knew her father wouldn’t be proud of her if she did. She’d made it a point to keep him in her thoughts constantly, almost like he serves as her conscience. It’s made her appreciate life more and pick her friends wisely. You need to surround yourself with people who are going to care about you (just more wisdom from her father). So for however loud and obnoxious Josephine can get, there’s always going to be that more sensitive side of her. You’ve just got to stick around long enough and maybe one day she’ll show it to you.

- - here today then gone for good - - The life of a merchant isn’t one worth telling. Its business, business, business day in and day out; there are a handful of changes every day that can keep things interesting for you, though. Some of those include the people you work with. Depending on the location you’re stationed at and how permanent it is, the people you’re trying to sell to can vary in all sorts of ages, shapes and sizes. This can also add some cultural color in whom you work with as well, but the mark of a good merchant is how well he knows others. If you’re interlinked with many, that means you’re doing your job right. As mentioned, the location of your work can differ as well. Sometimes you’ll be placed in a daily market and say there for weeks at a time. Other times you can be sent out to go deal with other traders during major swap meets. This was the sort of life Alexander DeLeon led every single day, since he’d managed to gain a place in the merchant world. He was a man who loved his work, finally having use for his cunning and charm. So the story goes, it was that same cunning and charm that caused a great deal of mischief in the Badeau family. David of the same surname was to be marrying Anna Rye in a month’s time when Anna began to have second thoughts. Why would someone of such good moral ever doubt herself? She was a fair daughter, unusually kindhearted, didn’t cause a terrible amount of trouble… Her only abnormality, in fact, was her witch heritage. Mostly passed down along through the females in her family, Anna had attended Hogwarts and finished up her seven years successfully as a Ravenclaw. The perfect princess unfortunately created a storm of affection when she went into town one afternoon “just to look.” She’d never had a flaky heart, always one for just having that “feeling” when she figured out what she wanted. Anna had believe she’d felt that strongly towards David, but as every good cliché goes…that was before she met Alexander.
- - no need to fear, you’re not lost – you’re here - - It wasn’t his good looks that won her over – Alexander hadn’t ever been attractive in that sense. Instead it was his brains and witty humor that got to her. When Anna returned back home that evening her planned future wasn’t settling with her like it might have yesterday. She begun to worry and doubt, questioning just how eager she was about being David Badeua’s fiancé. It was exciting finally having that dream of becoming a wife and mother in sight but it was almost as though the frame had been titled one way – suddenly off balance, not just right anymore. Visions of different grandeur started to appeal to her, foolishly picturing what life married to a merchant would be like. She’d only spent maybe thirty minutes with that man, surely an absurd amount of time to begin basing a future off of. Yet every great story started off somewhere. Maybe, she had convinced herself overnight, that this was her beginning. Anna went back to the market the next day and found the merchant Alexander once more, faking that she’d reconsidered buying a necklace she’d spared twenty-four hours ago. He was just as funny, just as smart. That was the moment that caused the snowball effect. One thing led to another, and soon Anna found herself explaining nervously to David that she wanted to call the wedding off. His parent’s had never liked her, they didn’t seem to sad to see her go. David looked hurt enough for the both of them, and that was without Anna mentioning meeting another man was the thing that had changed her heart’s decision. As it would turn out, that day Anna had made not only the biggest decision of her life but also the greatest. Alexander and Anna went for a winter-themed wedding, their marriage official in January of 1957. The news of Anna’s pregnancy came quick, a baby girl on the way and born February 2nd, 1958. Sophia DeLeon then was blessed with a baby sister three years later, when Josephine was born on January 17th, 1961.
- - my mom loves me and a sister who shows me and daddy’s always there - - Growing up in the small town of Calais is unlike any other experience one could ever have. Surrounded mostly by a small body of water, it takes bridges to enter the incased island or the one land pass linked to the greater part of France. Neither Sophia or Josephine would ever trade their childhood for anyone else’s and looking back on it, it’s easy to understand why. Their father being a wealthy man and of steady importance that also meant he was a rich man. The DeLeon’s home was nothing short of a minuscule mansion. Mostly clad in brick the house holds an air of fantasy. It’s the type of place one might suspect a modern day Snow White would inhabit. For the two sisters, it stood as their playground and adventure world. With only a few years separating them in age they were very close and enjoyed going outside to explore. When they were younger it was mostly places close to their house, amongst the woods absent of any close neighbors, and their bit of beach front property. They lived on the side of Calais that leaked into the ocean. Boats and other water vehicles would often pass by but nothing too close to the shore. Both Sophia and Josephine got real pleasure out of discovering tiny sea creatures in the rocks and mangled in sea weed. The only thing that crept Josephine out were the water bugs, most usually the spiders that floated and leapt along the surface. As they grew older, the girls’ courage grew larger. They became more daring in their adventures, sneaking out into town and looking through the side street shops. Through this both gained a peculiar interest in fashion and often fought over clothing. Their mother was good about teaching them more lady-like principles, such as the concept of sharing. Anna had taken occupation as a stay home mother and likewise helped her daughter’s to learn interesting crafts (some admittedly with he use of a spell here or there). It didn’t settle their wild nature together, but it was a successful way of getting them to come in and calm down for meals.
- - it’s making a change, the feeling is strange - - The idea of magic fascinated them. It was a topic openly discussed in the DeLeon’s household, despite their father’s muggle origins. Sophia was the first to go to Hogwarts, being the oldest. Making the two hour trip over to London that first year, at the station Sophia and Josephine shared a heartfelt goodbye. They’d been each other’s partner in crime for so long now, it seemed strange to think they’d be separated for a whole school year. Different things both happened to the separate girls during that year, though. For Sophia it was discovering a whole new, magical world. For Josephine…it was an idea, sparked into her mind from one of her mother’s brief remarks, what it would be like to be an animagi. She’d already shown she was capable of magic and expecting her Hogwart’s acceptance letter when she turned eleven; wouldn’t it be cool if she could turn into an animal before she ever got to school? Through much convincing, an old family friend and three years of time and effort, Josephine was granted her wish. Her first transformation was nerve wracking but nonetheless a success, with a furry Himalayan cat standing in place of where Josephine once had. The traits that seemed consistent in her human and animal form was her hair-fur coloring. Much like the blonde hair she’d been born with, the cat had long, tan fur with a darker face and paws. Josephine began to appreciate the world more through a cat’s eyes, her sight enhanced whenever she transformed – which she did so more than probably needed. The summer before Hogwarts she discovered more places and had a few bizarre run ins with neighbor cats that wandered too far. As the years past, it made for some incredibly fun times at Hogwarts. The two sisters would have five shared years before Sophia graduated. Those years proved pivotal – in more than one respect.
- - haven’t you heard that i’m gunna be okay? - - Summer ’74 was the hardest one yet. While Sophia happily gloated about all the spells she knew and Josephine continued to play cat out in the backyard their father grew progressively weaker to the point that he became hospitalized. The fun and games stopped for the DeLeon family while the rest of the world moved on. They visited Alexander every day, bringing along colored pictures and story books to read. He wasn’t an old man, late in his thirty’s, but his health didn’t reflect as much. Quite the contrary, Alexander was remarkably close to death. The whole family could see it, even if the doctor and nurses insisted they were treating him well and that he’d be back up in no time. It came as a devastating blow to the family when they got the call – Alexander DeLeon had passed in his sleep, never to wake again. It was comforting to think at least he’d gone peacefully, but that didn’t make the mourning process any less painful. Before the girl’s – for once, sadly – headed back to Hogwarts the funeral procession had taken place and their father now buried six feet under. That year was a strange one, one two outspoken girls coming back shy and quiet. Thankfully through friendship and time they got back into the swing of things. Just because death claimed a life didn’t mean those still living could stop, too. In a way Josephine especially felt like she was betraying her beloved father by getting on with her life, as if she couldn’t mourn long enough to be considered sufficient. She knew, as her mother frequently reminded, that Alexander would want them to live on happily though, despite the tragedy. So try they did, Sophia graduating and now leaving Josephine to walk the school’s hall as the only DeLeon present. Three years since her father’s passing and Josephine is stronger than ever – and if possible, even more outspoken.
