An Unforseen Complication

Alanah glanced at Sirius's unlikely protrusions shooting out of his mane of dark hair and then to Remus. Sirius seemed to be attempting - not exactly the most convincing performance she'd seen in a long time, mind you - to tell everyone that he was still taking Remus's notes. As if Alanah didn't know that. She glanced away to conceal her laughter, then instantly scolded herself. How could she be laughing when her friend was in such a dilemma? Sirius could be stuck permanently with dog ears if she didn't do something soon! Quickly she recited the list of spells she knew in her head, then gave up a third of the way through. She didn't know any that could get rid of the ears. Perhaps she could sever them, but if they were part of Sirius himself, it would be extremely painful and so out of the question. She ran a hand down her wand hidden in her cloak pocket and glanced at Vonna, who also seemed to have noticed Sirius's ears. Alanah looked at Sirius again, and this time she felt slightly annoyed. He was acting as he thought they were blind!

Anyone with half an eye could see those ears. Rolling her eyes, she took a step forward. "I thought we already knew that you took Remus's notes, Sirius," she announced, tapping her hand against her wand, still inside her cloak pocket. Of course, if Sirius was doing something illegal, she would never tell anyone because she didn't want him or any of his friends ending up in Azkaban, but if they were being stupid and endangering their lives and possibly the lives of others... She somehow knew that Sirius didn't want them knowing of his dog ears. That made her suspect something was afoot. Alanah could just reveal that she knew about the ears - which was bound to happen sooner or later - or just try and find what was happening without saying she knew anything about them. She twitched as she battled internally, then spoke again. "Sirius, what have you been doing?" She glanced at the ears, and then at Sirius with a look that said, "You're in big trouble if you don't do something soon."

As Sirius pushed James towards Kole, Alanah really began to think that they didn't want to be uncovered. Well, they had three Ravenclaw girls who had now seen Sirius's ears, and so it probably wouldn't remain a secret much longer - whatever they were doing - if word got out. She'd have to help them out somehow, as she wouldn't want to see Sirius nor any of his friends in trouble. She knew Vonna wouldn't either, but Kole... Alanah turned to gaze at the other Ravenclaw. Kole was a quiet little thing. She wouldn't blab... Would she? Shaking her head and wondering how she could have ever got herself caught up in this mess, the sixth-year turned to Sirius with a stern expression on her face that she often adopted when he'd done something that was down-right wrong in Alanah's book. Sometimes he could be such an idiot. Like now.

“Mmm?” Kole questioned as she glanced back over hr shoulder at James Potter “Sorry, what was that? I hope it wasn’t important, but I’m a bit scatter brain right now… I’ve lost something that’s terribly important to me.” She mentioned as she looked around for her book.

“Merlin where is that thing…” she grumbled as she continued to look around, walking towards where she’d first heard the sound that had caused all the complications she’d left only moments ago.

As she looked around Kole realized she was being quite rude, and had been rude when she’d suddenly rushed away from the group of people, but the worry of whether or not she’d be able to find the book came first in her mind to manners. After all, this book was from her mother as a coming of age gift. To most that might seem a bit trivial, but when you don’t live with your parents anything they give you seems pretty important.

She sighed and slowed, after all James had come after her… And maybe he could help her find her book!

“Sorry, like I said I’m a bit scatter brained right now… But maybe you could help me.” She started, glad she was able to stay calm enough that no hiccups found their way into her words “Like I said earlier, I lost something… Not something but a book actually, it was a gift from my mum and I’d really like to find it before any harm comes to it…” she explained quickly, still glancing around the surrounding area to see if she could spot the book.

"Is that it?" He asked somewhat relieved as he himself got on all fours to grope around in the darkness, directly under his worn feet. James seemed relieved by the simple problem. He was a bit worried he'd have to face a more awkward predicament, that of women and their dreadful hordes of feelings. He grimaced at the thought. Though he was quick to hide it as the task at hand became more resolute in his mind.

What kind of girl cares to look for a bloody book in the middle of the night? His own thoughts tickled his funny bones, and he couldn't help but chuckle a little into the thick silent night. Why, the only other person who'd pursue such a useless and trivial cause would be Remus and the whole entire Ravenclaw house. By the mere mention of the bizarre notion, a vivid depiction horded his mind. A whole field full of Ravenclaws-with stumbling glasses off of the bridges of their noses- in the bleedin' dark, all trying to find textbooks. What an idea indeed.

"I'll never understand scholars." He said plainly, pushing back a rather rough smile. Routinely he reached his hands out all around him moving upward, crawling on his knees. He covered quite a bit of ground for such a small span of time.

Remus looked back at Sirius as he had grabbed a hold of him and he moved back into a sort of protective position. ‘Yes I’m needed,’ He thought with fondness towards the poor half puppy looking young man. Then he grinned not being able to help himself. “You only want me for my notes?” He asked in a sudden bright voice. “And to think I thought you cared. Well if you want my notes then I insist that you go to the library with me I need to pick up a book for an extra credit essay.” Her gave a dramatic sigh and then he turned away from Sirius and back towards the others.

Remus felt relived as James headed away in the direction that Kole had went. Vanishing from view in the same direction from whence they had come. Remus’s deep blue eyes traveled to the ground at his feet. His eyes glazing over slightly in thought as to whether the spells he had in mind would work. He really didn’t see a reason for it not to. The one would lift whatever spell it was that Peter has hit him with and the other would force him to revert back to human form. It seemed logical enough but he wanted to make sure he got the one spell cast properly. It wouldn’t do for him to muck it up and make things worse. Though Remus felt that at this point it probably wasn’t a real possibility of it getting much worse. But the first spell he did not want to cast with the others around. What would happen if after it was lifted he started to continue his transformation into the black dog and all these people witnessed it? It would be a terrible and devastating thing. They would end up in Azkaban for sure.

"Sirius, what have you been doing?"

Remus’s face paled, all the color drained out of it. “Sirius hasn‘t been doing anything. Peter…” Remus looked at her as if the name Peter should have been enough of an explanation before continuing. "Peter did it" He said before thinking with some satisfaction, ‘Peter did it so it’s not a complete lie,’ He let the explanation drop. He figured that she could come up with her own conclusions.

“ I’m not a scholar… Just a Ravenclaw girl who lost something very important to her…” Kole told James in a simple tone “I know that searching in the dark for a book is probably strange to you, but I don’t live with either of my parents and when you don’t live with your parents and haven’t for some time anything you get from them you tend to cherish with all your soul.” She explained as she cast luminous and started to shine her wand about in hopes of catching sight of the familiar book cover.

“Sorry about that, it’s a bit to dump on you I know… But I really hate it when people think I’m odd without even knowing why I do the things I do…” Kole quickly apologized as she continued to look around. She sighed, starting to loose hope as the sky became darker and she’d still yet to even catch sight of her precious book. True, James was helping which meant she might be able to find her book quicker than she would have on her own… But seeing as on her own Kole might’ve never found her book that didn’t really lighten her mood.

“Merlin, I’ll never it…” Kole murmured depressedly, followed by another sigh.

“Er...” It had been presumptuous to think he could fool several of the most clever girls in the school. He had known Alanah long enough to recognize that look in her face. The silver-eyed boy turned to Remus pleadingly. Sirius had used up his excuses, and knew they weren’t going to take him seriously for that much longer. Remus, on the other hand… He had a much better chance convincing Ravenclaws than Sirius.

“Peter did it.”
Sirius’s heart stopped in his chest. That wasn’t drawing attention away from the canine appendages on his head at all. Contrarily, it seemed to prove that something was wrong. In fact, it almost spelled out the entire chain of events. “Moony,” Sirius said in a canine tone of whining.

Sirius took hold of Remus’s sleeve, “Let’s go back to the castle.” He pulled the cloak up over his head, and wrapped it tightly about himself, “I’m cold.” Sirius tossed a smile at the Ravenclaw girls. “Sorry to leave so soon, but I think a warm cup of tea is in order for us.” He turned away from them, the smile melting from his face as he realized that his elongated canines might have also been a clue. ((one of the Ravenclaws should throw a ball to confirm their suspicions XD))
