Stefan unfolded the new note as subtly as he could under his desk and glanced down at it, leaning his head on his hand as he read it over. His throat tightened. It was stupid because he'd known she was going to ask. Everybody did, at some point or another. Gritting his teeth a little, Stefan swallowed thickly and blinked up at the board for a while before he gathered himself again and tried to formulate a response.
This was the worst part. He had to explain even though he'd probably already told Gabby everything. He had to explain himself without indirectly saying something he hadn't. Answer her without raising more questions, somehow. He'd never been good at this. Ignoring the throbbing in his throat again, he carefully sketched out a new answer and slid it over to her.
It's not just about that. We wanted different things.
