a b o u t . t h e . c h a r a c t e r ! Name: Anandani Anastaysia Aeknov Date of Birth: February 23, 1962 Gender: Female Year: 6th Face Claim: Freida Pinto
Canon or Original? original
Distinguishing Physical Features: Ana is slowly growing in to her facial features; she was blessed with a round face, a rather defined set of cheekbones, and lovely dark eyes. She’s still somewhat young, but the baby fat is disappearing from her cheeks and she has added make up to her daily routine, accentuating her brown eyes and playing up to her sweet, bright smile. Her hair is long, thick, enviable by most standards; her natural brown locks fall just below her chest.
She’s a bit willowy, but from years of gymnastics and now Quidditch, that is to be expected. The fact that she tends to wear clothes two sizes too big doesn’t help either. Her stomach is flat, her hipbones stick out, her collarbones could probably poke your eye out if you got too close. Her breasts aren’t particularly grand nor are hers hips deemed baby-bearing, but she’s got a toned body, she’s healthy, and she’s still young, so she’s not going to complain about it. She’s taller than the average girl, standing at 5’8”.
Wand Type: 10 3/4, Sallow, Demiguise and Unicorn Hair, springy, excellent for Transfiguration, Charms, Healing Patronus: a Pine Marten. Boggart: Being forced to swim in a lake in front of all her peers, and subsequently drowning.
Personality: She's a happy person; I mean, it's not like anything too awful has ever happened to her that gives her reason to have a more pessimistic disposition. She's the sort of girl who takes life as it comes at her - she's never looked too far into the future, and she's not much of a dreamer either. Down-to-earth, laid-back, generally calm, cheery...she's at a good place in her life. She has all the best friends a girl could ask for, school is good, her family is all safe and well...yep, nothing sad or upsetting about any of that! It takes a lot to get to her, as well - Anandani was blessed with much patience, so the little things don't get to her or stress her out so much as they might other people. On that note, though, because she's so stable, because she's so calm and, you know, reliable for that very reason, she sometimes has problems expressing her emotions to her friends when she actually is having a bad day. She doesn't like complaining, and she's self-conscious that if she does mention her own problems, she's being selfish. She's hard to read, as well; for such a happy girl, she doesn't smile nearly as much as she should when she is happy, so of course a mostly emotionless face isn't a dead give-away like it might be with someone else.
Ana is, to be honest, a complete and total nerd. She loves academia, she absolutely devours books, and she does very well in all of her classes. She works to get her good grades, and while she may not be quite as devoted to studying as other classmates might, she does put a bit more pressure on herself next to the average student. She's even a little competitive about it; say, for example, if her eyes wandered while a professor was passing out tests after they had been graded and she saw a classmate got a higher grade than her, she'd be determined to do better next time around and might even mentally insult the other person. She spends a lot of her time cooped away in her dormitory or in the library, studying or just reading a book for the fun of it. Although she has the purest of blood, she was raised by Muggles, so it's rather normal for her to play muggle records in the dormitory. She tends to avoid the ~social scene and doesn't spend a lot of her time conversing with new people; she sort of just blends into the crowd, hidden behind her books and homework. She tends to stay ahead in her classes, reading a few chapters ahead in potions and transfiguration just for good measure.
Drawing and flying are things she does to unwind. She's painted before and while it's a medium she's will to explore, sketching is just easier; she carries around a notepad and some pencils and she's ready to go whenever the urge hits her. She likes to sketchy people, and as I said, she's a bit competitive - sometimes she likes to challenge herself to sketch a person before they get up and leave, so she has to go fast. Flying just helps her clear her mind, and she's an absolute Quidditch junkie. Having a good memory she keeps players and teams and stats straight and she listens to a Quidditch radio station to keep up with the league, and her favorite teams. She's even gotten into betting - something she probably wouldn't have done if she weren't so damn good at number crunching. Math, ladies and gentleman: one of the finer details of life they don't go into quite so much detail at Hogwarts while teaching. (Didn't stop Ana from teaching herself Calculus.)
She's a funny mix between an introvert and an extrovert. She loves being with her friends. When Anandani is with her friends, she's loud, she's funny, she's outgoing and she just doesn't care about making a fool of herself, because she knows they'll love her even more for it. She goes to parties with them, and has fun - granted, she doesn't do much wandering from them and she'd never go to a party alone, but she still does enjoy parties. On the other hand, sometimes she'll be invited to go out, but she'll make up some excuse because she'd rather stay in her dorm room and not do anything at all. Anandani needs alone time or else she will feel like she's going crazy - she just can't handle the over-stimulation of that party lifestyle where all you're doing it going out and hanging out with people and being everywhere except your own bed, your own mind. Yeah, a party every now and again is fine. Once a weekend? Sure. Anything more than that? She'd crack. She's quiet in class and never talks unless she's called on. She rarely goes out of her comfort zone to initiate conversation with a stranger - there would have to be some really good reason. New people just. Make her nervous. And she always gets so red - which she hates. Her nerves might be more bare able if only she could keep it to herself, but the fact that the other person has to see and feel embarrassed for you? Ugh. No. That just. No.
Anandani is a cuddle monster. Honestly, I might go so far as to describe her as being clingy; whenever she's walking in the hallway with her friends she insists on some sort of bodily contact, whether it be linked arms or intertwined fingers. Sometimes in the Great Hall or in the Common Room, she'll put her legs up onto the lap of her friends. She gives lots of sweet little kisses to her friends, just on the cheek or forehead, she loves giving hugs, she's just incredibly affectionate and she always has been with the people she loves. Physical touch, for her, is sort of the thing that distinguishes her friends from her best friends. It sounds so weird, but honestly, one of the ways she knows - or at least recognizes - how much she loves and cares for a person is whether or not she's felt the need or urge to hug them, or hold their hand, or give them a little smooch. Obviously, being as awkward with new, unfamiliar people as she is, she doesn't go around doing that to anyone, so it's sort of a big deal when she's okay with initiating a hug herself. If you're friends with Ana, expect to be exposed to an onslaught of love. Really. She'll give it to you, hard. Not only is she physically affection, but she's quite affectionate with her words. She's one to use lots of terms of endearment in conversation, and she loves complimenting other people and letting them know they're appreciated and beautiful and lovely and all good things.
One of the best things about Anandani is probably that she's a really great friend, plain and simple. To the lucky few who've gotten to know her well enough to see this side of her, they'll be able to tell you how loyal and trustworthy she is. She'd never go behind one of her friend's backs and betray them, she never makes a promise and breaks it (unless it's an emergency, of course), and she doesn't spread gossip. Her friends are basically her favorite things in the world, she wouldn't know what she would do without them, and she puts a lot of effort into her relationships, just with the communicating and making time for them, etc. She's a good listener, and even if her friends don't say anything specifically, she can just tell when something is wrong. She's also pretty decent with advice - granted, she doesn't have a lot of life experience with things like relationships and boys, but she is good at helping people examine and see things in ways they hadn't considered before. She's good at knowing how to cheer them up when they're sad, and when they just need to be left alone, and she really likes to make them happy.
On that note, though, we have one of Anandani's greatest flaws: she's a people pleaser. She has, occasionally, gone against her better judgement to make someone happy, and probably will continue to do so in her weak moments in the future. Anandani is absolutely god-awful at standing up for herself - and honestly? Most of the time, she doesn't even acknowledge that she should be standing up for herself, it's so second nature. She's laidback about a lot of things in life, so of course if her friends want to do something, she's okay with it, even if she may have had something else in mind. She probably wouldn't even bother mentioning it. It would take a lot of courage for her to call a friend out on something, just out of fear of upsetting them or hurting their feelings. If ever there's a moment when they ask something after voicing their own opinion and she disagrees, she'd try hard to make it known very subtlety that she disagrees, but she wouldn't flat out say it. She has been trying to work on this recently, along with her shyness.
Anandani is passive about a lot of things, and honestly, unless they relate directly to her, she's not really going to care that much. Gossip, for example, is something she never really got into. She doesn't care about the lives of the people who're always in the tabloid, really, unless they're her friends, and even then, she doesn't think it's really all that nice to be publishing people's personal, private business on paper and spreading it around for everyone to read about it. She just keeps her nose out of the paper and her head on straight. She isn't interested in making the people she loves sound bad, so why would be bother with spreading rumors? She's a rather private person as well, she doesn't generally extend much more than a hello to strangers, and she isn't the type to open up immediately to a new friend. It'll take her a while to really feel comfortable around them, comfortable enough to trust them with things that're important to her. She does have some problems expressing her emotions properly sometimes, even to those who're close to her. She's not so great with being vocal, you see; she's much better at writing things - it helps keep her thoughts organized, and she doesn't get nervous or stutter or stumble over her words like she might had she actually been saying them. She's quite awful at standing up for herself for that reason, among others; she will do anything and everything to avoid confrontation, really, and whenever she feels upset about anything, she just tells her that it's her own fault, she tells herself she's just being silly or crazy or that she's overthinking it, so why would she stand up for herself? It would be mean, afterall. So she just keeps her mouth shut, bottling up her feelings and keeping them put away until they manifest into something huge and, who knows, maybe she'll crack.

History: Naveen Khadri was a very lucky young man. Born into one of the oldest ad most respected pureblood families in India, he led a privileged life; anything he wanted, he received. He had plenty of friends. He was a good student - and all that hard work paid off when he got his dream job at the Indian Ministry of Magic, working under his father. Being the only child and son of the Indian Minister, he was the sole inheritor of fifteen pureblooded generations worth of money, real estate, investments, and most importantly, power. He was also one of the most eligible bachelors in all of India, and it may as well have been one of the seven world wonders, that he was 25 and un-wed. ...Until his parents got impatient and set up a marriage. Now, don't get me wrong, it was fine with him. He was a little disgruntled at first, and he'd probably rather wait for someone he was really in love with, but that was too much of a hassle, and his parents were really pushing for this, and the girl...well, she wasn't half-bad. Zara Velkova was, like Naveen, from one of the oldest and most respected pureblood families in all of India (not like his parents would settle for any less). She was beautiful. She was intelligent. She may have been a bit more arrogant that he had liked, but he'd get over it! There were arranged to be married the next winter. Until Naveen majorly fucked up.
Hirkani Dhawan was a pretty girl. She knew it. Everyone knew it. Her genius of a father married a Swede - but thank Merlin for that, because it gave her one of the greatest gifts a woman could ever ask for: good looks. Granted, she didn't get too much of anything that would make you immediately think she was Swedish, but it gave her a particularly thin nose, lighter skin, long legs, and blue eyes that stood out like a sore thumb. But the guys liked it; she was like a breath of fresh air. Or atleast, she was closer to the girls in all their magazines. So yes, she used it to her advantage - who wouldn't? Her status in society, her looks, her wealth, her charm and her intelligence? They were a deadly combination, and they were certain to get her far. ...She just had to graduate first. But before that could happen, her grandfather, the former Indian Minister, passed, and on one weekend she was shipped back home for the funeral and celebrations. Everyone came to the funeral, whether they were pureblood or Muggle-born; it was a huge event, and she was bound to bump into Naveen. They weren't necessarily friends, but they two knew each other; of course, their conversations didn't wander anything far from "how's school?" and "how's work?", but they knew each other. The seven year age difference was probably the biggest reason they were never really friends, but two days after the funeral, the Sunday she was to return to school, Hirkani and Naveen found themselves in a long-winded conversation - more like argument - about morality, and one thing led to another and they were going at it on the desk in the boardroom. Afterwards, the two of them recognized the fact that what they did was a mistake; after-all, he was engaged and seven years older. They parted on good terms, both fairly sure they'd never see the other again in such a state. ...But then a week later, Naveen found himself at her school for a 'Ministry Inspection', and then he knew that the bed frames needed to be repaired. And then their steamy affair continued on for weeks. But theeeen she was late.
Hirkani told him as soon as she found out; neither of them really knew what to do, but they both were aware that they were in deep shit. If anyone found out the Minister's son was screwing the former Minister's granddaughter, who just so happened to be a minor, all while planning a wedding? That was not good for publicity. And then Hirkani would basically become unweddable, since no self-respecting pureblood man would marry a girl with a bastard child, no matter how pure her blood. The only option was simply to prevent anyone from finding out...which, you know, sounded simple. But in reality? Not so much. It was May now, still early, and graduation was approaching; surely she'd be able to keep this hidden from the student body just by choosing clever outfits. And with all that money at her disposal, she'd be able to pull it off with style, so nothing would look suspicious. Luckily by the time graduation rolled around, she had only put on a few pounds - something few of her friends noticed or mentioned, and if they did, she'd just attribute it to stress. Quidditch was done by then as well, so she hadn't been working out as much as normal. As soon as she found out, she wrote to her mother and father, expressing interest in traveling abroad. It wasn't too far from reality, either; she'd always been open about loving traveling, so she just said she had a change of heart. An internship at the Ministry was no longer her calling; she wanted to travel for a while until she started settling down and working on her career. Not suspicious at all. As soon as she graduated, she moved off to one of Naveen's families' unused seaside cottages in Scotland. She'd stay there until her nine months were up, and give her baby up for adoption. And then she would return home. No harm done.
Insert David and Mia Aeknov. They met at school. Both attended The University of Cambridge, both were majoring in science, both had roots in the Soviet Union. They fell in love and got married shortly after graduation, had a daughter named Eva in 1960, and were really quite happy. But one thing they always wanted to do was have a family - a big one. It was decided early in their marriage that they wanted to adopt as well, and when Eva was one, they made the decision: they'd start filling out paperwork. They moved from the outskirts of London up to a humble town in Scotland, and began the adoption process. And then a young woman from India showed interest in their profile. Several meetings followed, and it was decided: David and Mia would be adopting Hirkani Dhawan's baby. They were absolutely ecstatic - and Eva was excited to become a big sister. On February 23, 1962, Anandani was born.
It took a lot of willpower for Hirkani to give her baby to Muggles. They were Muggles. Filthy Muggles. But she had no option - she couldn't risk giving her child to anyone else. Her pureblood name was widely recognizable to nearly every wizarding family in India, and even in other countries, if you just did a little bit of digging, you'd be sure to pull something up. There were people who would do anything to upheave the natural order, people who wanted to disrespect and tarnish her family's reputation - even more so, Naveen's. He agreed that Muggles would be the best choice. Obviously, they'd be a little shocked when their daughter turned out to be a witch, but it wouldn't be unlike anything other Muggle parents experienced. A few months after giving birth, Hirkani returned home. No one suspected much of anything, and in the months after giving birth and before going back, she did do quite a bit of traveling - just enough to come back home with plenty of stories about the people, the culture, the language struggles, the food. She went on to get an internship at the Ministry and lived happily ever after, as did Naveen. Crisis averted.
After David and Mia adopted Anandani, they adopted Desmond from the Congo, Lily from Manchester, and had two more of their own children - Elizabeth and Lydia, twins. Anandani was a happy little girl growing up. Her parents sat her down and told her when she was six that she was adopted, but she replied with an "I know!", because apparently she knew mommy and daddy wouldn't have been able to make a baby who looked like her, what with their light skin and eyes. She started gymnastics when she was six - not so much because she expressed an interest in it, but because her parents were worried she wasn't socializing enough at school. She was always a bit on the quieter side, and they hoped something like this - which could eventually result in her being a cheerleader at school when she was older - would help her come out of her shell. She also began taking piano lessons around this age, which were relatively successful. She was nine when she did true, undeniable magic; other, smaller things had happened before but they could have easily just been called a 'freak accident'; doors closing mysteriously, vases shattering, the peonies in the front yard magically blooming before your eyes, toys showing up in her bed at night. This was different. Everyone was in the backyard - Desmond was running around chasing chickens, Lily was on the swingset being pushed by Eva, Elizabeth was off somewhere shoving a stick in an ant hole, and Ana and Lydia were bouncing on the trampoline. Lydia was still small, not even three, and Anandani was jumping up and down, hard, to propel her into the air. But at one point in time, she hit the trampoline in a certain spot, and Lydia was too close to the edge, and she went flying, she was certain to hit the ground, but somehow her descent slowed rapidly, and she levitated back over the trampoline and landed with a graceful little plop. David and Mia, who saw the whole thing, attributed it to some sort of trade-wind.
Growing up was quite the adventure, though; both parents were busy with jobs and working towards their Ph.D's - David got his in entomology when she was 10, and Mia got hers in neuroscience when Ana was 15. Of course the house was always crazy, what with all those kids running around. They had a decent amount of land surrounding the ranch, a little under ten acres, so the kids were constantly outside, running around, playing with the animals or going on adventures in the woods. David and Mia were, and are, great parents. They encouraged the kids to always be nice to the other kids at school, and to eat their vegetables, and to do their homework no matter what. They were never too strict, though - they trusted the kids, so the time came pretty early that they could just go off on their own in to town to the market. David and Mia, honestly, are their own little variation of hippies - they insist on feeding the children with all natural, organic foods - a lot of which they grow in their own garden - and they always encourage loving one another above anything else, and it would be an uncommon thing if you walked into the house and didn't see paints sprawled out everywhere, incense burning, and Earth, Wind and Fire blasting in the background. The kids, for example, are allowed to decorate their own bedrooms - paint the walls however they so choose, as long as they don't get the linens messy. They have a bell at the foot of the stairwell they ring to get everyone downstairs for dinner, which they always eat together. They didn't raise the children religious, but at dinner they always go around and say something they're thankful for before digging in. The hallways are lined with display cases holding dead bugs of all different shapes and sizes, they have a tarantula and they play with it like it's a pet - really, the Aeknov's are freakin' weird. So it did make sense that the kids at school picked on Anandani. They called her Daddy Long-Legs, which was really all-encompassing: she was a daddy's girl, her daddy loved spiders, and she was always the tallest kid in the class. They called her Fishy, because of her pouty lips. They called her Spider-Girl non-stop after she dressed up as Spider-Man one Halloween. David and Mia weren't really financially well-off for a while, still paying off legal fees from the adoptions and school, so they bought a lot of clothes for the kids second-hand; the other children at school noticed and mocked her constantly, saying she should go and live in the pen with her pigs and horses and cow. Of course it all made her sad, but she never mentioned it to anyone, not to her teachers or the principal or her parents. She just kept to herself and did her homework and came home and played with her siblings and her parents. They loved her. Always would.
A few years and a few more incidents later, Anandani got a mysterious little letter informing her that she was a witch, along with a visit from a particularly eccentric looking man with a long beard and half-moon shaped glasses. Now don't get me wrong, Anandani was excited about being a witch. The idea of being capable of doing magical things with a little wooden stick was just flat out awesome. There was, however, a little part of her that wished that it had never happened. She wished she could stay in Scotland and go to that boarding school her parents were going to send her to when she was thirteen, and she wanted to be able to see her family every day, and the idea of having to make new friends just petrified her to the bone. It was a scary thing, learning one day that you're capable of doing magic, and learning that in a few months your life is going to be completely different. But that fear was wiped away as soon as she went to Diagon Alley. It was there that it finally hit her that it was actually happening, it was actually real, and even if it would be sad to make new friends and be away from family, it'd be okay, because magic was going to be her life now. It was who she was since birth, and even though she didn't know about it, she just had to be brave! She even met her first friend at Diagon Alley, which soothed a lot of her worries. When she finally got to Hogwarts, after counting down the days for a month and a half, it was like a dream come true. She was living in a castle, for crying out loud! It was so beautiful, and she thought magic was amazing, and she settled in quite nicely. She found friends, kept playing the French Horn, tried out for Quidditch, and she's been plenty happy all along. And that's all that really matters in the end.
