a b o u t . t h e . c h a r a c t e r ! Name: Roxanne Kennedy Reid Date of Birth: 25th June 1961 Gender: Female Year: Sixth Face Claim: Holland Roden
Canon or Original? Original
Distinguishing Physical Features: Roxanne's most defining feature is, quite obviously, her hair. She keeps it long and has always been proud of the fiery red mane. She has a habit of tossing it behind her shoulder whenever it gets in her face, or whenever she thinks she has the attention of a male and wants to flirt with him. The only times she has it up is if it's an incredibly hot day and she's too lazy to cast a charm, or when she's playing some sort of sport. Like most other natural redheads, Roxanne has fair skin, although it's not quite pasty. She still burns very easily if she doesn't put on a lot of sunscreen. Her lips are fuller than she would like, but she's learned to embrace it over the years. Her eyes are green, with the occasional flecks of brown which kind of aggravates her because she wishes she could say she just had pure green eyes. Otherwise, there's nothing too special about her facial features. There isn't much special about her features in general, really. She's not too short, not too tall. She's not too skinny, but not too fat, either. She's mostly just a happy medium in terms of physical appearance, really. Which is a fact that's a little disappointing since she likes to stand out, which is why last summer she snuck off to a tattoo parlor and got her first tattoo. It was nothing too special, since she's not someone who enjoys pain, but she got a burst of stars along her right hip. And it hurt like hell, but it was worth it.
Wand Type: Unicorn tail hair, 12", oak Patronus: silver fox Boggart: Her ending up like her mother - being beaten by a faceless man with a wedding ring, and yet continuing to insist that she loves him.
Personality:
on the outside
Roxanne is - excuse my French - a bitch. It's the impression she gives at first glance, and it's not an impression that she minds because she's perfectly fine with appearing that way. It's not that she doesn't mean to be - she does. She's the girl who'll tell you those trousers make you look fat, to your face. Because that's the kind of girl that she is. She's extremely blunt, to the point of cruelty, but she's not petty enough to go behind your back and talk crap about you because, let's be honest, that requires effort and actually caring enough to do that and, frankly, Roxanne simply doesn't care. If you're not in her way or giving her a reason to insult you, then she'll probably brush you off and ignore you, because she simply doesn't have time for you, she's got more important things to do. Like filing her nails or telling first years to carry her bag to class for her because she didn't want to ruin her perfect posture, or curling her hair just right so that it wasn't too straight, but it wasn't too wavy. Of course, there are times when people break through the barrier of "just an annoyance" and into "wow I really don't like you" which sometimes grows to "okay, now I hate you, bitch" and that's when Roxy will put you in her mind and attempt to make your life a living hell. And it's only then that she will resort to petty lies and rumors and everything else that makes your typical bitch a, well, bitch. It's really no surprise that she has such few friends, because unless she thinks you're actually worth spending time with or she thinks you can benefit her in some way, she'll more than likely treat you the same way she would treat a wall. She's built this thick barrier around herself, and there's only a select few people that have managed to tear it down, and it's those people that can actually call her out on her act.
Like I said - Roxanne is honest to a fault. If there's one thing you can count on, it's that she'll never lie to you. Oh, she'll pretend she's someone she's not, sure, but with the little things you can trust she's telling the truth, and maybe that gives everything a messy connotation because how can you be considered an honest person when you're not even honest about yourself? But it's the way that she sees it, and somehow that gives it more sense, because she doesn't lie about things that matter to other people. She'll give you her honest opinion - and, being a rather opinionated girl, she has a lot of them. She doesn't really care if it'll hurt you, or if it'll upset you or make you cry. As a matter of fact, sometimes Roxanne will revel in the power the truth can give her, especially the knowledge that she's handing it to someone who obviously doesn't want to hear or believe it.
If there was a list of the people who've slept around the most, Roxy's pretty sure she would make near the very top of that list. She doesn't care for things like relationships, makes it seem like she doesn't have time for them or that they're unimportant. If she finds you attractive, she'll happily tumble into bed with you and then sneak out in the morning before you start getting attached, unless she thinks you're worth another round. The few relationships she's had have always ended with heartbreak - for the other person, that is. She hates commitment of any kind, so a few weeks into the relationship she'll purposefully cheat on the person, sometimes in front of them, or practically stomp all over their heart with a few well-placed words that all sound pretty much the same: "you're not good enough, I never liked you much in the first place, we're just not working out for me, you're not exciting enough for me and I'm bored." She supposed she could soften the blow by saying something nice, but it's not in her nature to mince words.
on the inside
Roxanne has a tendency to ruin things for herself before they can get ruined first. She has this belief that nothing good ever lasts, so in order to avoid the inevitable pain, she'll screw it up first. For example, with her homework; Roxy is a lot smarter than most people give her credit for. She'll write an almost flawless essay for one of her classes, and then in the conclusion she'll write in something completely irrelevant or she'll purposefully insult the professor to bring down her grade from a potential O or an E to an A or, sometimes, a P. Or, she might do well in a class throughout the semester and then botch up the exam. Half the time, she doesn't even realise what she's doing. She'll sabotage relationships if she feels like they're going well; if she really likes the person she's dating, she'll break his heart before he can break hers. She has this constant fear that everyone and everything is going to end up hurting her, so she does everything in her power to avoid that hurt, or runaway from it. It's why she's never had a serious relationship and why she has such trouble letting anyone in, because she hates feeling fragile and putting the power in anyone else's hands but hers.
She's also one insecure mess. She sleeps around because it's the one time she actually feels wanted, because it makes her feel better about herself that someone desires her. She has a hard time with rejection, even if it's something as simple as 'I have a girlfriend'. It's why she tends to target people she knows will sleep with her, or those she knows she can seduce - whether because their relationship is rocky, or they're known for sleeping around, too, or she thinks they're easily influenced and thus she's capable of seducing them into her bed - or, since males can't enter a girl's dormitory, into their own bed. She's also had relations with a few females in her time, since she doesn't exactly care where she gets the attention from, as long as she gets it. She'll never admit it to anyone, not even herself, but every time she leaves someone's bed in the morning, she feels another little piece of her dignity die, another piece of her die. And for several seconds, she almost hates the person that she is. But then she shakes it off, raises her chin, and struts out of the dormitory like nobody's business, acting like the queen bee that she wants so badly to be. Deep down, all she really wants is for someone to look past the cold, hard bitch exterior and bring out the person that she doesn't even know she could be. Deep down, she wants someone who'll give her the love you see in movies or read about in books. But she's so caught up in protecting herself so that she doesn't end up like her mother that she doesn't even realise what she really wants.

History:
Everett Reid had always been an angry man. He had an awful temper that came out more often than it didn't, and when it did he took it out on his wife and son when he drank. You wouldn't know it if you looked at him, because he was a politician and politician's couldn't be angry men who beat their families, so in front of everyone else he smiled and looked like the nicest, most dapper gentleman you could ever meet. But then at night he'd have a couple of drinks and the anger would start, bubbling up his chest, flowering through his veins until his hands curled into fists and sometimes Moira would accidentally break a plate because she was always so damn clumsy in the kitchen so he'd whack her across the face and tell her how absolutely useless she was. The only times he didn't beat her was when she was pregnant, because he wanted - no, he needed - an heir, and Moira clung onto those nine months of respite like a life line. But then, as soon as Everett Junior was born, the beatings returned and he didn't just do it when he was drunk anymore, but because sometimes she forgot to bring him tea early enough in the morning because he finished his shower when she was just getting out of his bed, or because the dinner was cold because he stayed too late at work and she didn't have time to warm it up before he was ready for dinner, or because he thought she was flirting with the postman, ("I saw you, Moira, don't you dare deny it. I'll teach you to lift your skirt for anyone but your husband!"). That last one was so bad she had to cancel shopping with her sister because she had to heal up. He'd been so angry he went for the face more often than he did; usually, he aimed for places that she could hide beneath her dresses, places only he was allowed to see. Sometimes, Moira thought of taking Everett Junior and leaving, but each time she shook away the thoughts because they would barely last a week. She had never gotten much by way of education, and the only thing she was good at was sewing, which would hardly get her a job that she could raise a son on. Plus, she knew full-well that Everett would never let her leave. He'd sooner kill her and make it look like an accident then have the press know his wife had left him; she could see it in his eyes. The threat, the warning, and it chilled her to the soul.
When EJ was five years old, his father began beating him, too. You're not smart enough, why aren't you getting better grades? he would roar. You're a disgrace! He's only five years old, Moira would say, pleading helplessly as she held her weeping son and tried to shield him away from the monster. Please, he's only five years old! But even though she begged him to stop, she never made a move to make it happen. Sometimes, she would simply stand in the corner crying while Everett pulled his belt out of his work trousers that she'd ironed just this morning, and accidentally left a crease, earning her a blackening bruise on her side. And then she would look away, as if she couldn't stand to look at it, and EJ would wonder why his mother never did anything more after that first time. How she could let his father hurt him so badly, how she could allow it. And that was when he began to hate his mother almost as much as he hated his father, and, growing up, the feeling only got stronger until he turned eighteen years old and finally left his father's home, because he knew he wouldn't be able to stay a day longer under his father's roof without taking a knife to his gut. After that day, Everett Junior vowed never to lay a hand on his wife and children.
He would later break that vow.
---------
Everett and Melanie met in college and it wasn't exactly your typical romance. They didn't fall in love at first sight. In fact, they were constantly in competition to be the best and one might say they even hated each other. Melanie was determined not to do like so many of her friends had done: get married and abandon her studies to become a barefooted housewife, heavy with child, and she found Everett a threat to the vow she had made. Everett, on the other hand, was too busy determined not to be beaten (no pun intended) by a girl that he didn't even notice he was falling for said girl until she started dating someone "casually" and he realised that wanting to punch the bloke's face in wasn't generally normal behavior. So he worked on breaking them apart and seducing Melanie. And she resisted, of course she did, but then a year later she was walking down the aisle towards him, love in her eyes, and another nine months later she was giving birth to their only child, a daughter they named Roxanne Kennedy. And for the first few years, their marriage was picture perfect. But then the bills were getting harder and harder to pay off and they had to sell their house and move to a smaller apartment. Even though Melanie had vowed never to do it, she left work to take care of Roxanne. Work got stressful, so Everett started drinking and, sooner than he thought possible, he began following in his father's footsteps. It started with a broken plate, which resulted in a hand print across Melanie's face, and sort of escalated from there. At first, Melanie tried to fight him off. When he hit her, she hit him back. When it became clear he was stronger, she simply gave up. Now, Everett never laid a hand on Roxanne, but he would often rough her mother up in front of her and, somehow, that was just as bad, because Roxy just couldn't understand why her mother wouldn't stand for it. When the school bully teased one of her friends and pushed her around on the playground, Roxanne had shoved him to the floor and yelled at him. Why couldn't her mother do the same?
Sometimes, when the fights got really bad, Roxanne would go to their neighbor and stay with them for the night, sometimes longer. She didn't know if the neighbors just took pity on her, she was too young to think about why they let her stay. She was really only there because she couldn't handle her mother looking at her father with such love when he was hurting her so badly. Plus, she kind of liked the girl next door, who had very pretty hair and an amazing doll collection. It was your typical broken household...except not really, because Roxanne started noticing she could do things. Like once, the belt her father had been about to use on her mother had snapped out of no where, even though it looked incredibly sturdy. Lights would flicker when he made her watch what he was doing. Doors slammed on their own. A haircut gone awry was - magically? - fixed the morning after. When Roxanne told Clementine about these odd events, seriously freaked out after the hair ordeal, Clem informed her - with all the excitement of an eight year old - that Roxanne must be a witch. Roxanne had, of course, scoffed at the idea, because there was no way magic existed, but then on the summer of her eleventh year, she received a letter informing her she was invited to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and Clementine was, of course, the first person to know. After a whirlwind of squealing that Roxanne was later very embarrassed by, the redhead demanded as much information as Clementine could give her and returned home that day with the most genuine smile that had ever crossed her lips.
Her mother was the one that she told. She was terrified her father would forbid her from going. At first, Melanie had been in complete disbelief - and then it suddenly seemed like a blessing. Sending Roxanne was the best thing she could do for her daughter girl, in case Everett turned on her. So she gave Roxy all her savings for school from the bank account she'd started for her behind Everett's back when he started controlling her spending. She told Everett she was sending their daughter to a private school, and it was the only time she'd actually stood up to him. Roxanne stayed with Clementine that night, because it was worse than ever. But then on September first she was riding the train right next to Clementine for the first time and, if you were to ask what Roxanne's favourite memory was, it was that day; the excitement, the absolute joy and anticipation balled up in her stomach, threatening to explode. She'd never felt anything like it before, and the only other time she even came close to feeling this way was when she was playing quidditch, or flying in general.
As Roxanne grew older, she she began to see why her mother was allowing the beatings to happen. Not because she was too weak to run away, not because she didn't have the money - but because she loved her father too much. Instead of feeling more understanding, all Roxanne felt was disgust. And she vowed never to let herself love someone so much that she'd put up with what her mother has to put up with. And so far, she's the only Reid who has kept her promises.
Sample Post: nope lol.
