Discussion: Calculating Compatibility using numbers

As hard as Professor Vector tried not to show her favoritism, she did have a tendency to like her older students better. For one thing, they were a lot more mature and she didn't normally have to worry delinquents in her classroom - especially since Arithmancy was a pretty heavy subject and trouble-makers weren't normally very intelligent - a stereotype, yes, but it was a pretty accurate one nonetheless. Besides which, sixth and seventh years usually knew they wanted to take this class, and the classes were smaller, so everyone caught on faster than the younger classes and she didn't have to repeat herself dozens of times for the students to understand what she was trying to explain. Professor Vector, like most professors, likes teaching, you see, and she definitely was more motivated to teach a class that was actually interested in her subject. Then again, what professor didn't want that? Peering at her class at large from behind her desk, she waited for them all to settle down before getting up and walking towards the board. "Please turn to page 235 of your textbook. I have a very interesting lesson planned for us today," she told them, sounding unusually enthusiastic. She turned to survey them once more, the hint of a smile barely visible as she continued, "we will be learning how your compatibility with a person can be calculated using numbers. I want you all to turn to the person sitting next to you and, using the formula in your text books, calculate how compatible you are with them." Pleased when a flurry of action accompanied her words, Professor Vector sank into her seat and simply supervised. Yes, she did like the older students very much.
