{ A B O U T . T H E . C H A R A C T E R } Name: Ian Whiting Age: 18 Gender: Male Year: Seventh year Face Claim: Sean Faris
Canon or Original? Original
Facial Properties: Justin looks a little like a pretty boy but not to the extent that his “pal” Noah does. He has sharp brown eyes that in a certain light take on the hue of a sad, dull gray. His hair is usually dark brown and semi short, coming straight down to center his face in an a-line style cut until it flips out at the ends. Justin has a defined jaw and chin that are normally clean shaven (he’s a bit OCD about it on some days) but if he’s having a bad week he’ll have some stubble lining his chin. Like Noah he has a smile that lights up not only his entire face, but the whole room. His voice tells one thing but his smile tells another story, especially when all he can work up is a sneer. His cheeks have a light pink hue and a smooth complexion, one that atones for his forever boyish looks. Justin’s lips are sculpted and firm, but it’s his eyes that give him away when he’s up to no good. He’s the type of guy who likes to smile even when he’s mad, and it’s hard for him to look angry when his face sports two cute dimples and a matching beauty mark right above his upper lip.
Physique: He’s thin, but he’s built. Surfing keeps him defined and toned - just take one look at his arms and you can see that. He is a little bit bigger than his counterpart but he’s shorter, reaching five foot ten. Justin is stronger than he looks and he’s more of a muscle man than you’d expect. When he isn’t surfing he isn’t playing any other sports except for kick boxing; surfing is his oriented love. Boxing is what keeps him ready for action. Justin tans a lot better than most Caucasians so he can avoid the sun block and go straight for the waves. Unlike Noah’s expensive preppy style, Justin prefers to keep it simple. He often wears solid colored shirts and slacks, but they are always tight fitting so he can show himself off. Justin realizes the importance of not dressing too well, otherwise people will start to wonder. He doesn’t care as much about how he looks though it comes easily to him. He enjoys wearing the 1920’s style hats, the one that makes him look like a blue jazz listener, and he’s a fan of the leather jackets.
Wand Type: Blackthorn, unyielding, 10”, chimaera scale core
Wand Expertise: Excellent
Patronus: His patronus is the common Red Fox, fitting because of the animal’s quality for being clever and avoiding getting caught while still receiving what it wants.
Boggart: While Justin doesn’t like his fears being exposed, he does find it rather amusing to see others’ and that’s why when they had a boggart lesson at Salem, he couldn’t resist coming to class. When the boggart was released in front of him, it transformed into the ugliest goblin he could think of. He doesn’t like magical creatures on the whole, and they are always so disgustingly arrogant he can’t stand the sight of them. That was his worst fear at the time but it has been a few years since, so no one really knows what it would be now.
Personality:
Justin knows what he is, and he’s proud of it. He only pretends to be someone else when it gets him somewhere that he needs to be or wants to go. His priorities are certainly askew, as he thinks the greater fault are in people who lie to themselves rather than lie to other people. You have to know who you are, imperfections and all in order to know where you are going. This leads to my next point – he’s a hypocrite. He embraces only the faults in himself that he can handle and ignores all the others. He’d like to think himself perfect but he knows better than that. People are who they are, and Justin has always thought that couldn’t change. People can’t change who they are, they merely pretend to. Everyone is disillusioned in some way or another. He has caused more than his fair share of trouble. Just by being a kid he was a trouble maker, but then hand that child a wand and you have a problem on your hands. It was mostly just simple pranks, not that any prank is truly harmless but to a kid things like that are black and white. He wasn’t aware of causing any long term damage. He still causes trouble, but now it’s a different kind of game. Justin does it to hurt, and he does it on purpose. He doesn’t rely on his wand so much anymore, having learned that the most powerful weapon is the power of influence by words and otherwise. There is no official right and wrong, just what is right and wrong to you. If you pick and choose your battles, one should be careful who picks it with Justin. Payback’s a bitch.
A good word used to describe Justin is cold. After Sara broke his heart he wasn’t the same. He doesn’t really understand love the way so many other people do. His mother left him, Sara cheated on him, his best friend stabbed him in the back and with his father, well, it’s not the kind of love that involves a lot of hugging and outwardly affection. He’s a great pretender, one of the best. With his real friends Justin doesn’t turn on them, they have a real relationship and he is good toward them. But with those he makes to justify his own means…..they don’t know what’s coming to them. He doesn’t take a lot of care in how he treats them or how they are affected when he’s finished. The same goes with romance. He probably doesn’t give a shit about you. Sorry. You aren’t Sara, that’s what it always seems to come back to. It doesn’t mean he won’t have a little fun with you before it’s over. But unlike Noah, romantic affairs aren’t his first priority.
Before Justin got really bitter about what was dealt him, he was fun to be around. No, he didn’t go out and party every night but life is so much more interesting than that. He still can spend hours sitting in an arm chair drinking coffee while he reads a book or listens to classical music. If you will, Justin is an old soul. He’s an extroverted introvert because he can be a good socialite if need be, but he’d rather have a quiet night at home. He’s silly just like his counterpart and loves a good joke. He doesn’t care where people are from or what their background is. Justin experiences people for who they are, not what they are. Justin takes interest in people who are smart, who can talk to him about literature and politics, but smart teenagers are such a rare breed these days…..well, he does his best with what he has. It takes all types of people to build the world. His emotions used to be heavily guarded, and though they’ve gotten the better of him, he uses the facts and what he knows as his greatest weapon. He has the ability to be the best bro you’ve ever had, and the meanest enemy you’ve ever selected.
Justin can get wickedly curious. If someone can keep his attention he can be tricked. Playing games also gives him a kick. The way to get Justin is to beat him at his own game, find the weakness. Justin has to finish things; he can’t just let them go. He brings back the saying “it’s not over until I say it is”, and burns it to the ground. If you don’t play his game he gets mad and it frustrates him. He’s also a dangerous bugger. He takes something that was fun and keeps going until he turns it into something bad. Now, Justin doesn’t go around murdering people and setting fire to the school, what I mean is that he has a wicked temper. He likes to fill people’s heads with doubts and then let it flourish, just planting the seed. It surprisingly doesn’t take a lot to get the ball rolling, and from then on it’s all in the victim’s hands, not his own.
Polite, cordial, sympathetic, understanding, a real gentleman. Yes ladies this is Justin Whiting as you see him. He comes across as very understanding to a certain extent. He will hold open the door for everyone, smile at the homely girl sitting by herself, excuse himself when he leaves the table and even make pointless conversation. In fact, this is his usual demeanor. He is out to draw people to him rather than draw them away. Keep your enemies close, you might need them later. Besides, if he doesn’t have a beef with someone he’s not going to purposefully make them miserable. Justin isn’t the boy that sits behind you and spits paper at your head. His form of passive aggressive is a bit more forceful than others. He’s also extremely crude. His language would make any grandma pass out at the first sentence. Justin has never had a way with words.
He can charm with the best of them, but his approach is typically much less forward than Noah’s. He charms by being that guy you can trust, the guy who isn’t talking to you just because you’re hot or you’re rich. He’s the solid foundation nearby, the guy who looks and seems like he has it all together. Because it seems he does, he’s so calm and collected it’s almost unnatural. Justin confuses by being nice one minute and making a cruel sarcastic jab the next. A lot of people don’t know how to take him. Other people are too dumb to notice. And that is what Justin is, he’s nice and understanding….it all depends on who you are as to whether it’s real or not.
He has no idea what he wants. He feels miserable all the time, so he likes the company. Besides that, Justin doesn’t know where he is going. He doesn’t enjoy showing this vulnerability, the feeling that he is second best and that he’s self conscious about his mistakes. Justin likes to play, and play he will. He goes to parties sometimes but he’s not into the active party scene. It bores him. If someone were able to wedge their way into his heart it would make a world of difference. After all Justin was once that playful kid you always wanted on your team. Now he looks out for number one. And that doesn’t make him bad, it just makes him flawed. He likes jokes, he likes attention. Justin’s simply developed a hate so deep that he can’t find himself anymore.
Frankly, it’s hard to describe Justin’s personality because it changes depending on his circumstances. He’s like water; he molds and creates new pathways for himself. He is completely surprising to people sometimes when he does something out of character. There are specific kinds of people that even he doesn’t recognize at first that he’s drawn to, and he turns out to be very kind toward. Unusually protective, he’s a perfect choice for someone who needs to be looked out for. Justin doesn’t like when the weak are bullied, and he makes that very clear. Not only that, but he’s sickeningly….sweet to his friends. Honestly, he’s compassionate and generous to those that he cares about. These days, they are few and far between but it’s not impossible. The reason for his harsh display is hurt. Isn’t that what it all boils down to for everyone? They don’t want to get hurt again, so they put up a wall. A person who is quite feeling decides to feign annoyance and disinterest because of anger. Justin is filled with it, he’s practically consumed. But he still adores the innocent, the people who are able to keep betrayal and lust out of their lives. And Justin, you can count on him. When he says he’ll be there, he will, he doesn’t back out of his promises. That’s the one good quality that unquestionably will never leave him. He doesn’t let people down.
There are a few things you need to know about Justin if you want to be his friend. One - he doesn't like cheaters. Due to his own experience, cheating is the most rotten thing you can do to a person who loved you and cared about you for four years a long time. Actually, cheating on anyone no matter how long you two have been together is just wrong. If you're famous for that kind of behavior, he will Never like you. Two - stupid people are only good for making fun of. They aren't any actual fun to spend time with. He likes someone he can talk to about more serious things; there's a time and a place for goofing around and doing something crazy and while Justin is all for it, that's not all he wants. He likes intelligence even if it isn't broadcasted. And finally, three - if you're Noah Orchard's friend and Justin is being nice to you, he's probably only out to get you. No offense, he has no beef with you, you just happen to be guilty by association. Life is unfair, get over it.

History: If you have ever doubted Ludovic Bagman being the only person to teach Noah his charm, you’re right, he wasn’t the only one. A lot of what he learned was from Justin, but their different experiences and trials in life turned them into two very different men, especially in the way they use their appeal. Justin and Noah met; you could say that first day they took on the waves…in the kiddy pool. Instant friends when Justin saved Noah from a killer wave that knocked him off his floatie tube, they became inseparable. But let’s start from the beginning of the story. Justin was born to Gregory and Monica Whiting in North Dakota. His dad was an odd job sort of person. Actually, Justin still doesn’t exactly know what his dad does, it’s all very hush hush. He’s pretty sure he is a hit man of some kind, but unless you’re absolutely sure, you can never assume. His mother was a resident priss, playing one man after the next. By the time Greg got a good job in sunny California, Monica had already decided she was tired of playing housewife and refused to go with them. It’s hard to really say in such a case if she was the abandoner or the abandonee, but either way it was clear three year old Justin was going to affect her social life so Greg left her with his son. That was the last time Justin saw his mother until he was fifteen. The next time they would see one another wasn’t such a picnic either.
Monte Carlo, Los Angeles, San Francisco. They were all over the state at first until they could finally settle down in a secure location. It was only fate that brought Justin and Noah together in the middle of the wealthy muggle suburbs. Justin’s father was a busy man so Justin spent his time with other kids his age. He believed in instant gratification. He helped older boys swipe a baseball cap, he wanted his sucker. He started surfing, he wanted to be a pro. Noah came into the picture and it turned out this little pixie boy took to the sport almost as fast as Justin did. Together they took the surfing community by storm, placing in their age group for every competition they entered. It wasn’t until the pattern of Noah taking first and Justin taking second that Justin began harboring some bitter feelings toward his best friend that wouldn’t resurface until years later. After all, Justin was the one who loved surfing the most. It just seemed Noah was always a little bit better at things, or he had a little bit better life. They’d spend the rest of their life being jealous of each other. Fast forward. Now that they are preteens, meet trouble one and trouble two. Boy did they live up to their names. Justin was the ringleader, stealing stuff and finally moving onto bigger things when he discovered what kinds of problems could ensue with his little wand. Despite that he was the one with all the bad ideas, Noah was the one who got caught. Sent the muggle mayor’s house a little bit out of territory and got shipped off to jolly England.
The boys would still be friends when Noah came back every summer, even with a new chick in the picture on Justin’s end, but it was the start of their differences and it only increased from then on. Justin in the meantime attended the closest wizarding institute when he turned eleven – Salem Institute of magic in of course, Salem. He’d write to his only muggle friend in on the big secret, a girl named Sara. In Justin’s mind she was gorgeous, really, the definition of hot. She also found his little “quirk” to not only be mysterious but alluring. Justin and Sara became really close and soon she took the place of Noah, who more often than not didn’t even spend the entire summer in California. He and Noah had known Sara since they were nine, but it wasn’t until Justin started the wonderful phase of puberty that he realized he was taken with Sara. Justin could have had anyone his age, he was a looker from the get go but the only girl that ever held a place in his eyes was average muggle Sara. Thirteen. He spent every waking moment of summer with her, they started dating. Boyfriend and girlfriend. She knew just how to have a good time and he knew how to make her laugh. It no longer mattered what his dad was up to or how much trouble he found, all that mattered was Sara. Justin Whiting was completely whipped. That is until Noah returned the summer before his sixth year. It was their second to last year and he was so smitten with Sara, they’d been dating for almost four years. It had been an open relationship while he was away at school, he’d dated girls, but when he returned their relationship was always serious. He might have even married that girl, who knows. But Noah, Noah, Noah. He saw Sara every summer too but something was just so very different about her this year. Sara may have been way into Justin, but it didn’t change her nature. She was as unpredictable as she was unfaithful. Justin goes out of state for one week, leaving his best friend and Sara alone and do you know what happens? Well, despite preconceived notions about Noah, Sara was actually the one who started hitting on him first. He was reluctant but he warmed up fast. She was so lively, so beautiful, so up for anything. Their short fling felt like an eternity to Noah and he took her to all the best places. It was the first time he felt like he was really in love with someone….and then Justin came back.
Apparently, the only thing it wasn’t okay for the two boys to share was a girl. See, Justin was sure he loved Sara, and then he catches her and Noah together. It’s enough to make a guy crazy. Justin and Sara got into a huge fight, and it all ended with Noah taking a punch to his kisser. He didn’t fight back, he knew he’d deserved it. And that was it, it was the end of their friendship indefinitely. All those years were gone over some girl. Some girl who honestly didn’t care that much about either of them, how could she and have done this? Sara didn’t pick Noah either, she asked Justin to take her back. Noah went to England and for half a year Justin was single, but eventually he gave in and started dating Sara again. As much as she didn’t deserve it he couldn’t help himself. Noah came back at the beginning of summer for Salem institute in order to go into rehab. Yes, Justin had heard all about the glorious return of wonder boy gone wrong. They didn’t talk, they didn’t do anything. But the way Sara kept bringing Noah up all the time while he was so close made Justin see the truth. He broke up with Sara, realizing he’d never really have her heart. Noah didn’t know it, but even still, in Justin’s mind he had won again.
He was a rich boy, a very rich boy. Despite that, none of it mattered to him. Justin is far too practical to care about his new money. He spends some here and there but on the whole, he has never been very exuberant with it. He’d always been generous, taking his friends out to fancy places. To him, it’s what a good friend did. Bomb fire on the beach? He’d bring the drinks. Before the fiasco with Sara and Noah, life had been good. Not great, but tolerable. He has a whole library to himself in his California home, and a grand fireplace to match. Though rather antisocial now, Justin used to be involved in the community. He had a true soft spot for muggles and did a lot of charity work. With the bad also comes the good. Salem Institute is set in the small, historical town of Salem. Justin thought it was fun to often educate people on its witch history, adding a few things here and there that the history books failed to mention. He loves teaching, learning, that sort of thing. So that’s how he spent his life – surfing, boxing, school, charity, and love. And then it all happened, and Justin lost interest in the finer things of life. Justin had gotten into far more trouble than Noah ever could, and he’d seen his mother again when he was fifteen. She’d been in California to visit her famous boyfriend and looked him up. Well when she had seen what a man he’d become and a lady killer, of course she brimmed over with pride. Justin on the other hand wanted nothing to do with her even after she suggested he come live with her so he could start a political career. No, Justin told her just where she could stick that political career. He had a decent relationship with his father. They cared about each other even though it wasn’t very affectionate. They understood each other. Justin had friends. His life was a rollercoaster but unlike Noah who embraced its bumps and curves, Justin grew bitter. Things always worked out for Noah, he got the good end of the deal. Justin never knew just how jealous Noah actually was of Justin, who always seemed so put together. The straw that broke the camel’s back was when word got to Justin that Noah had gotten another break and was allowed to come back to Hogwarts. So Justin developed the perfect plan. Why not go to Hogwarts for his last year on a study abroad program? Suddenly, Justin felt a change in the wind as he packed his bags; it was time to visit an old friend.
Sample Post: Check out Noah or Bellatrix…one of the gang.
