Facial Properties: Julien isn't a classic pretty boy nor is he rugged. His face is oval and made up of sharp angles. Julien's jaw line is almost at a 90 degree angle and ends in a strong, dimpled chin. His cheek bones are defined and he has a light covering of freckles along them. His nose is short and then too wide at the bottom and while he has a full lower lip, the upper one is rather lacking. The corners of his mouth turn down naturally and his naturally heavy brow tends to cast shadows over his eyes, causing his default facial expression to be a bit of a frown. His eyes are a shade of blue-green that's a bit colorless and most of the time just look gray. Julien's hair is a shade of brown that likes to go between being on the verge of dirty blonde to the color of dirt. he keeps it relatively short because he doesn't have the patience to fuss with it and it drives him crazy if it starts dipping into his eyes. Julien doesn't tan very easily, if anything he'll just get more freckles or a sun burn. If he doesn't get enough sleep, you'll notice because the delicate under his eyes will turn a deep purple and sometimes it's hard to tell if it's lack of sleep or if he got into a fight (since he does pretty regularly) that has discolored them.

Physique: Standing just under 6' tall, the best way to describe Julien's physique would most likely be stocky. He's never been considered scrawny, even when he was younger and in that phase where most boys became awkward and lanky, he still had meat on his bones. Now, at 16 years of age, Julien has a thick body type and is mostly made up of muscle. After growing up in a house where they struggled to pay the rent, Julien spent a lot of time doing work for neighbors in order to help his mom with money. So since a young age, Julien had been doing a lot of physical labor which attributed to his muscular build. Also because of his modest upbringing, Julien doesn't have a lot of nice clothes or really care about what he wears in general. Most of his jeans are old and beat up and he has a tendency to hold onto favorite shirts for a long time until the hem starts coming undone or a seam begins getting worn. He also wears a lot of layers and when he isn't in his school uniform, he's usually in a long sleeved shirt with some sort of shirt and a jacket over it. To be honest, Julien actually prefers being in his school uniform because that's the only time he doesn't have to be on edge or worried about someone commenting on his clothes.

Personality:

THE GOOD

If you’re someone he is on good terms with, Julien can be one of the most entertaining people out there. He is outgoing and loud and has very little shame when it comes to announcing his presence to the world, or even just to a pretty girl. He doesn’t let many things bother him (aside from muggle rights, but more on that alter) and is laid back to almost a fault. Some people might say he doesn’t take life/school/himself seriously enough, but he just doesn’t see the point in wasting time and energy on things that only make your life more complicated. He loves to laugh and Julien is also exceedingly flirtatious and his tactics range from subtle hints to full out hitting on a girl. He's the kind of guy who can be bluntly turned down to his face and he'll be completely un-phased by it. He has an easy smile and loves teasing people, especially his friends. If he pokes fun at you mercilessly, it just means he likes you, even though sometimes don't people take it that way. He has no problems with approaching a stranger and striking up a conversation. He exceptionally loyal, especially when it comes to his close friends who he considers to be his "partners in crimes" and will do almost anything for them (including risking his life or getting detention).

Julien is also very honest. He's not the sort of person to hide the fact that he doesn't like someone (trust me, you'll know if he doesn't) because he doesn't see the point in beating around the bush. He's not big on sharing feelings and while he cares deeply about his friends, it gets pretty awkward if it has somehow fallen into his lap to be the one to give a friend advice or comfort them. He's much better at cheering people up or providing a distraction. Julien will, however, defend his friend with every ounce of his being. If one of his friends really needs him for one reason or another, Julien will do everything in his power to follow through. He is also exceptionally reliable -- which may surprise people because he seems flighty -- but if he says he'll do something, he will do it. While Julien gets awkward discussing feelings and other messy things of that nature, he expresses physically instead of verbally. He'll play jab a guy friend in the ribs or loop his arm over a girl friend's shoulder to express affection. Julien is naturally competitive and is absolutely obsessed with quidditch. His favorite position is blindside beater and it’s probably the only constructive outlet his has for his pent up anger. He has really good aim and while he might not spend a lot of time toning up the rest of his body, his arms are massively powerful and deliver impressive hits to bludgers and faces (if there’s one place in the world you don’t want to be, it’s on the receiving end of a punch from a well trained beater).

THE BAD

Julien has rather an extreme personality. He either likes something or he doesn't and sees everything as very black and white. Julien's outgoing personality can sometimes come off as being abrasive and he is rather rough around the edges. He doesn't get along perfectly with everyone and he seems to be the kind of guy that you either love or you can't stand because his personality is made up of so many extremes. Julien can be a bit too reckless for his own good, to the point of sometimes being self destructive. He doesn't use constructive or healthy ways of dealing with his own issues and has the tendency to drink when he's upset. Julien likes trying new things but doesn't always consider how dangerous a situation is or how much trouble he could potentially get into for pulling one of his stunts. He has a lot of "strokes of genius" where he comes up with his best idea EVER/of the day. Julien and his partners in crime tend to break a lot of rules -- all in the spirit of fun, of course -- and, unfortunately, he doesn't usually get away with it. At the end of the last school year, he actually managed to accumulate more detentions than there were days left in the school year to serve them in. Even though his is typically sure of himself, Julien can get self-conscious but mostly when it comes to his lack of new or fancy things. His mother doesn’t have a lot of money, so most of his clothes are worn out and a bit beaten up. He also feels extreme guilt whenever he thinks about his mother because he feels like he had abandoned her to go to a nice school and isn’t there to help her around the house, make some extra money or protect her. Although he hasn’t admitted it to anyone out loud, Julien thinks that it is his fault that his father is dead. If he wasn’t a wizard, his family would have never been in Hogsmeade to begin with and his father wouldn’t have been killed in the Death Eater attack. Julien can literally make him sick with worry just thinking about it. Julien can sometimes come off as being guarded when a subject comes up that he doesn't want to bout. Even with his close friends, if they try making him open up about something he doesn't want to, he lets them know. Julien has a bit of an explosive temper which he usually only unleashes on people he doesn't know very well. He can be a bit over protective of his friends and if he feels like someone is trying to take one of his friends away from him, he can get very jealous.

THE UGLY

Like I said, people who don't know who Julien really is tend to think that he is either obnoxious, a jerk and/or a bully and this is largely due to the fact that he gets into fights so often. He comes off as being confrontational because he can get offended pretty easily when it comes to certain topics. Julien is a muggle born and his father was killed when he was younger by a pureblood elitist. With the current state of the wizarding world, Julien's fear of being attacked (in whatever form) because of his blood status has exacerbated over the past few years. A lot of people think he's fearless because he is so quick to jump into a fight, call someone out or defend himself (even against multiple enemies or in a public place like a classroom), but this form of bravery is just how he responds to his fear of someone attacking him first or when he isn't looking. Whenever he feels threatened, he'll go on the offense. When it comes to the fight of flight response, Julien always jumps immediately to "fight". This is why Julien has a pretty bad reputation, especially within the circles of pureblood sons.

When someone comments on his blood status -- or, Merlin forbid, they call him a mudblood -- his first response is to punch them in the face. When he isn't in the comfort and safety of a group of his friends, the fact that he is muggleborn and thus the object of hate from a lot of powerful and dangerous people weighs heavily over his head. Not only does he worry for his own safety, but he is constantly concerned about his mother's as well and he finds particular comfort in his muggleborn friends. Julien's blood pressure skyrockets just thinking about Death Eaters and believes that they, along with Death Eater sympathizers, need to be rounded up and executed in a very painful and public display. This is possibly the one thing in the world that Julien feels the most passionate about and he is known for, and make a habit of, beating up and getting into fights with purebloods. Especially the ones who openly express their disdain for mudbloods and their alliance with Death Eater ideals. He feels no guilt or sympathy about this and believes that Death Eaters -- or anyone who remotely supports them -- needs to be punished for their actions and strongly supports capital punishment.

History: The Cross family came from very humble origins. Both of Julien's parents were muggles who came from Calais, France, which is the closest city in France to the UK, located right on the coast. The community they lived in was small and made up mostly of fishermen, navy bars and factories. Everyone knew everyone else's business and, just like everywhere else, there were neighborhoods for the well off (ship captains and factory owners), and neighborhoods for the manual laborers (deck hands and factory workers). Julien's parents were part of the latter. His mother, Camille, was a worker at one of the bigger lace manufacturing factories and his father, Remi, worked on a fishing boat. The two of them met at a local pub and, so hear Remi tell the story, Camille fell instantly in love with his charm and the two became inseparable after that night. To hear Camille tell it, Remi was drunk off his ass, spilled ale on her only pair of good boots and practically harassed her into seeing him again. But, apparently, Remi became tolerable after a while and Camille finally got to know him while he was summer and while he was pretty much just as obnoxious, he was genuinely a good man with a good sense of humor. When the talk of marriage finally came up, Camille told Remi she wouldn't even consider it until he found them a livable home, stopped drinking and grew a beard. Seven month later, he'd scrounged up enough money to buy a one bedroom house located close enough to the docks he could walk to work, hadn't touched a drop of alcohol in five months and had a bushy beard that reached his collar bone. So, after the eighth time of being asked, Camille smiled at Remi, said she would marry him and told him to hurry up and shave that hideous beard off so she could properly kiss him.

When Julien was born, Remi had been working himself to the bone and had even gotten himself a higher paying job on a bigger fishing boat to ensure that he would be able to properly provide for his wife and son. Camille had been apprehensive to take too much time off work from the factory to care for Julien, but Remi insisted that they needed to worry about Julien first and he would figure something out. For the first few years of his life, Julien was mostly raised by his mother. This isn't to say that Remi was an absent father because while he did work a lot and would be gone on fishing trips for weeks at a time, whenever he was home, he spent almost all of his time with his wife and son. Remi actually taught Julien how to play baseball and Julien clung to that thing they shared and is why he is now such a good quidditch beater. Once Julien was old enough to go to school, Camille got her job back at the lace factory. Julien, of course, hated school and his favorite time of the year was Christmas and summer holiday because Remi and Camille would saved their money up enough during the rest of the year to be able to take time off. While they never had enough money saved to actually go anywhere, just being able to spend uninterrupted time with his both of his parents was enough. Julien was known as a bit of a trouble maker at school and while sometimes he did cut off a piece of that one girl's hair or get caught with firecrackers in his pocket, there were other strange, unexplainable instances that Julien knew he didn't do, but no one really seemed to believe him.

The really weird things didn't start happening until he was 10. Remi and Julien had been walking through some of the old, abandoned ports by the docks and Julien had somehow managed to move a steel container when his baseball had rolled under it. It had frightened Julien and he was convinced he had done something very wrong and was going to get in a lot of trouble by the way Remi freaked out. Remi had tried to explain to Camille what had happened, but she got mad and accused Remi of picking up drinking again. But then Julien turned their beat up couch in the living room from beige to bright purple. Things were explained when Julien received a letter from Hogwarts, along with a professor to explain how Julien was a wizard. It was a six hour long conversation and by the end of it, Camille was white as a ghost and Remi's hair was a tousled mess from running his hand through it so many times. Julien, on the other hand, was ecstatic. When Julien started at Hogwarts, he was beyond excited to start this new life, even though his parents wouldn't be able to be as involved as they had been for the rest of his childhood. No one had bothered to tell him how muggles weren't so easily accepted into the wizarding world and he learned first hand how there was many wizards, especially pureblood ones, who hated him for being muggleborn. He experienced prejudice first hand on his third day of being at Hogwarts and, instead of being ashamed of who he was, Julien just became more proud of his heritage and who he was. He had always been a bit combative and quick jump into a fight -- even before he came to Hogwarts -- and his need to defend himself and his family became exacerbated as time went on.

The biggest turning point in Julien's life came during the Death Eater attack on Hogsmeade. Remi and Camille were only able to visit Julien one weekend out of the school year, and that weekend Julien had decided to take them to Hogsmeade and show them what another wizarding community -- other than Diagon Alley -- was like. Remi loved magic, thought it was thoroughly entertaining and was always talking about how he was convinced he was actually a wizard and that the Ministry of Magic had somehow gotten his paper work mixed up. Camille, on the other hand, was always a touch uneasy about it and just couldn't understand how owls were a reliable means of postal carrier. Julien and his parents had actually been on their way to Honeyduke's when the Death Eaters attacked. It was massive chaos with explosions of green lights coming from everywhere and so many screams it was deafening. Remi had grabbed Julien and Camille and had shoved them into the doorway of a nearby store. Julien doesn't know if the Death Eaters recognized Julien as a muggleborn and thus had figured out that his father was a muggle, but what he does know was that Remi had just gotten them inside when a bright green spell hit him in the back, and his father's body collapsed onto the stone steps. Now, his mother still lives in their old home and works more than full time at the factory. Julien is a much more guarded person than he used to be and his temper has gotten excessively out of hand if the subject of his father or him being a muggleborn gets brought up. Many of his friends know about what happened and they have pretty much stopped trying to get him to go with them on weekend trips to Hogsmeade.
